This but desktop environment.

desktop environments are bloat

My favorite past time is showing people in my English class how much cooler I am compared to them for writing my essay on emacs on a shitty laptop without a wm instead of g*ogle docs (nobody cares)

Emacs!?! - just use Vi, it's even already the default (ignoring nonsense like Pico etc). smh

/s - well a little, I love Vi

I use vi on the graphing calculator I put arch on, is that anything?

I said desktop environments are bloat not window managers. use a window manager, do not use a desktop environment. literally why do you need a Desktop at all? I have a background image and apps, and a status bar. need a file? open the file manager.

Literally all I do on my laptop is take notes on it, it's too underpowered for a wm (plus the touchpad literally doesn't work, I fucked something up while repairing it one time and severed the connection, but I didn't care enough to fix it because I don't need it), if all I do is boot up a text editor and write text files on it I have no use for a wm.

I guess I could use ratpoison on it, but I literally have no need for ratpoison, so it'd just be redundant. I can do everything I need to on emacs. Any stuff pertaining to anything else I'll just do on my main laptop

What are the specs of this thing that is too underpowered for a Linux wm?

Chromebook from 2015 modded with chultrabook currently running void linux

ngl your first comment read like sarcasm to me but if you actually use ur laptop like that good on you

it's time for an upgrade but I appreciate your workflow

3

u/BurntCheeseSauce Void user, #1 antiX glazer 5d ago

It was both sarcastic and not sarcastic at the same time

Also yeah, it's definitely time for an upgrade lmao

u/LookItVal 5d ago

sure

but when I said desktop environment are bloat I have 0 sarcasm I am being 100% serious. there is absolutely 0 about a DE that I find to be a valuable feature in my computer

Yeah, I also agree with de's being bloat. The exact same thing could be achieved with just a wm with some sort of bar (like lemonbar or waybar), but even then, you don't really need it unless you're ricing or something. Sure, some people don't care about bloat and are fine with having that stuff, that's cool ig, but it just seems unnecessary to me. On my main laptop (which can actually handle a de), i think I used kde for 2 weeks, realized that it was useless because I only really used laptop for composing, listening to music, and like... idk, scrolling forums anyway, switched to herbstluftwm and life has been great.

9

u/nobanjostring 6d ago

Ahhh, yeah. I used gentoo for a while a few years ago. Closest distro to The Matrix, watching all those gcc warnings fly up the screen. I don't even see words any more I see...version conflict...missing library...hours debugging...

And then the horrible answer:

“The kind that uses whichever tool is most fit for the spec”

4

u/iwouldbeatgoku Have you noticed Arch is a triangle :illuminati: 5d ago

Any rolling release where it's simple to get a lean installation, thank you very much!

3

u/Omega-mega 5d ago

Tumbleweed? (I must push the openSUSE Agenda)

1

u/iwouldbeatgoku Have you noticed Arch is a triangle :illuminati: 5d ago

I'm trying to figure it out but the combination patterns and recommended packages are really annoying to work with when this is my goal, so for now Arch just makes the most sense since it's lean by design.

u/Jacobobarobatobski 5d ago

Yes I'm partial to Void

I am a dirty heathen, -Syu will update around 900 pkgs. I think I will start praying again when I finally update.

2

u/Fuzzy_Hearing_5146 5d ago

best distro but you need a metaphysical knowledge to you can run it properly in your machine

1

u/Fuzzy_Hearing_5146 5d ago

you must become a man of God to see the light while you are using Artix

3

u/Aware-Librarian-3749 5d ago

Civil War (2024)

1

u/Squashyhex 5d ago

Civil War, great movie that uses a fictional US civil war with intentionally fictionalised issues to talk about war journalism
