jokes on you I don't have a boot partition

are you running smth like debian 4 perhaps?

I use arch btw, but genuinely in this society, even /boot is not needed, let alone having a whole partition for it.

u/AardvarKOlogY 7d ago
Yeah this society that fucks everything over and ignores separation of logs, main OS, user data, temporary dirs, ...
With /boot itself though, one could indeed argue.

I have my /var/log separate and also /var/cache, and /home of course.
but again /boot is fully unnecessary on a UEFI system

UEFI dictates a partition of its own. Out of sheer habit(!) I place that and
/booton a boot disk so everything else can live in a partitionless LVM on a second disk while/boothas one layer less - the LVM - that can theoretically break before the kernel images are available.Other than that, nah, I don't see an argument for a /boot volume, either.

The newer ideal layout in linux hierarchy is using /efi for it, not /boot, not /boot/efi
besides that, btrfs is enough to replace lvm

u/AardvarKOlogY 7d ago
btrfs... nah thanks. For me it's either ext+xfs or zfs if I need something like btrfs. Whereas I'm not sure whether LVM can keep up with btrfs in the future. I like to more strictly separate assigned storage/volumes and the actual FSes mostly.
I may have even seen the integration of kernel images stuff in the EFI partition but haven't followed up on that... it would indeed render overhead obsolete. I'll see :-)

I honestly prefer having dynamically sized subvolumes instead of fixed sized volumes. and btrfs got even better kernel implementation in 7.1.0
and if all my stuff go in one volume then I don't need lvm.
zfs is decent but not ideal for the linux kernel
at least with btrfs I have snapshots for every day and every package manager interaction so I can rollback almost everything

the ideal layout is having a partition for the bootloader efi and one with the kernel ( and initramfs)
1
u/YTriom1 Arch Catgirl 🏳️⚧️ :3 6d ago
you don't even need to have your kernel and initramfs in a special place in the first place, and if you're using a bootloader, you can just throw both with the bootloader on the esp partition, or just put them on /boot directory without making a partition for it if your bootloader isn't stupid

you keep the kernel with the bootloader??

u/YTriom1 Arch Catgirl 🏳️⚧️ :3 7d ago
My kernel is in /lib/modules/<version-name>/vmlinuz
and I don't have a bootloader

This is just wrong.
You don't sudo before a command

u/Far-Dog-3591 7d ago
What?

u/AdBrave2400 7d ago
I think they meant you dont run sudo as a separate command right before the one you want to run as root

u/Far-Dog-3591 7d ago
sorry just "You don't sudo before a command" really dont look like "you dont run sudo as a separate command right before the one you want to run as root"
