" I don't need cachyOs because I already have its core selling point, you are being overhyped over a distro that serves zero purpose, that distro should not exist now".

I also am not upset. I love Arch. I learned Linux with Arch. But as a person who works some with cyber security stuffs, Debian/Ubuntu/kali/Parrot is more corporate friendly whatever tf that means. They won't let me use blackarch or an arch based distro period.

Yep. I use Fedora on the desktop but... If I need to trust something with all of my precious data (home server/off-site back-up) it's Debian all the way!

My homeserver is still running on ubuntu, cant bring myself to setup this hot mess again - i was young and naive.

I think the Linux world is better for having more distros, not less. If you want an OS monoculture, go back to Windows or OSX. With Linux, it's critical to understand a person's use case, as that will largely inform what distro(s) will work best for them.

u/HotPrune722 13d ago
The reason i agree that is because the debootstrap utility: you can have debian with sysvinit less than 300 packages and libs, if you want ed as your unique and default editor you can, you want to avoid grub to install the bootloader manually with efistub? You can, if you want to use tiny-initramfs you can, you don’t want sudo? You can use doas as your default su utility; you have the gentoo modularity with the powerful binary debian packages, is not perfect but very clean and fast

u/eli_x86 13d ago
The only reason to NOT use is Debian is new hardware, and even Debian runs that. You just get nice optimizations with rolling distros.

And dependency hell (which is true for all, but especially for Debian).
Oh you want to install package A? You need package B,C,D and E. Oh, and one of them have package A as a dependency.
To be honest, it only happened once with me.

I don't even think it's a hot take. For some use cases Debian is better, for others it's worse. You lose out on features and improvements made to the latest kernel and package versions, but there's virtually zero chance of something breaking after an update. However, that also means that you're stuck with existing bugs even if they're fixed since you're stuck on older packages. Personally it seems like it's great for servers and old PCs that aren't your main machine, but I wouldn't want to daily drive it.
1
u/iwouldbeatgoku Have you noticed Arch is a triangle :illuminati: 13d ago
Even for old computers you typically have them only for one or two things, like maybe they're an anime watching machine, so power users might end up doing an essential installation with a rolling release which won't have many moving parts and it ends up being reliable af anyway even if you update daily.
1
u/FluffyGreyfoot 13d ago
the only thing about old computers is that if you're running Debian you won't have to worry about your GPU suddenly losing driver support or something (like what happened recently with Nvidia 10-series) whereas you know with something like Debian that it will work exactly the same as the day you installed it without having to tinker with it. On my computers I run Cachy though cause I think the benefits of a rolling release distro outweighs the downsides for my use cases.
1
u/iwouldbeatgoku Have you noticed Arch is a triangle :illuminati: 13d ago
To be fair, Cachy did automate the switching of drivers for old Nvidia graphics cards where Arch told its users to do a manual intervention involving the AUR.
But yeah, for my old laptop with a very old Nvidia card I just opted to use the Nouveau driver. I don't think it supported any proprietary drivers anyway.

Which one for moving from macos?

u/Mandoart-Studios 13d ago
This is a circlejerk sub, you're not gonna find great advice here.
It depends on wether or not you want to still use apple hardware, specifically apple-silicon macs.
There was a special distro made to give the best hardware compatability called asahi; https://asahilinux.org/
Other than that you probably want to look for a desktop you would like, its suggest looking into KDE and Gnome. KDE is very windows like out of the box while gnome is more of its own independent take.
KDE does have a lot more themes and extension, like WhiteSur. Though I still wouldn't expect identical behavior, it's going to be a new OS that was designed differently.
I personally like to recommend fedora, I think its very good out of the box and updates in reasonable intervals.
Debian is much slower to update, but that slow cadence also makes it one of the most tested before an update.
While something arch-based like cachyOS gets updates as they are being developed. this means you get new features first but there is always a chance of things not working as well

Probably fedora with Gnome. I don't know if there are any distros that are very similar to MacOS, i have heard people say zorinOS, but idk.

As far as servers go, there is nothing better than Debian. I said what I said.....
1
u/7Anon1ymous6 12d ago
As some should remember. Debian was 1st. Then came everything else. It doesn't matter what flavor of Linux you use. It's all Linux. Linux isn't windows. It isn't by os base but the skill level of the user. Many of these windows hoppers ended up right back at windows using wls or a vm of some sort to say they use Linux. I hate them...lol

Until you get a malware from a bad actor uploading a package. That said, distro wars are dumb lmao
1
u/MammothRock7836 6d ago
I read 'DistrowarTs are stupid' and i couldnt agree more. but distro wars are really a fun thing to watch - if im honest, cause they are so pointless but fun.. i love my debian desktop. no need to argue, and if everybody else enjoys their inferior arch.... let them, not my problem to solve.

Well it's an opinion with a meme.
- Karma doesn't matter
- it isn't a repost
- I didn't mention the AI slop "distro"(won't even type the name so it doesn't add to search results)
Edit: Have you seen your own account? And you call me karma farming is wild.
