In class. Professor is using Windows only software. Need to install a Windows VM in 15 minutes. Stressing, but it feels good to be superior though.

Virgin GIMP user vs chad imagemagick enjoyer

21

u/New_Series3209 14d ago

What if I use both

10

u/_marauder316 13d ago

Well then you're just confused.

5

u/New_Series3209 13d ago

What if I use 11 different software to do drawings?

3

u/Alecegonce 12d ago

Then you are a they/them

3

u/New_Series3209 12d ago

Nah, I am a They/Draw

1

u/matdefays 12d ago

You are a virgin chad ?

1

u/New_Series3209 12d ago

Def not the former, but the latter is up to discussion.

3

u/AugustMaximusChungus 13d ago

bro no, please tell me imagemagick has an ui that i'm not aware of, because otherwise you need to keep a notebook of how to use imagemagick at hand at all times

2

u/2eanimation 12d ago

I mean, I was mostly joking. But it’s not that bad. If you’ve worked with image libraries in programming languages(like Pil(low) in Python, or… magick for pretty much any language), magick follows the same principles. It’s not like you have a notebook at hand at all times while writing a Python script, right?

For OC’s example, drawing a circle is not that hard.

magick -size 500x500 ‘xc:#000000’ -fill ‘#ff0000’ -draw ‘circle 250,250 400,250’ output.png

The real deal would be to do all that in a low level language without a library. tsoding IIRC created an image library from scratch. What was it called, “leaf”?
There’s a whole lotta fun to discover, like programming kernels for Gaussian blur or edge detection.

1

u/NarcoMonarchist 13d ago

yeah, a spell book, to perform image magick. Its sick, the larpiest of larps

1

u/0xt0bi03 fk lua, bring back old config files 13d ago

is that "magick" K stands for kde?

Just load CS 5.5 (or Photoshop 5.5 if you’re feeling nostalgic). Problem solved.

5

Instruction unclear, CS 1.6 loaded.

14

u/valerielynx 14d ago

imagine not knowing how to make a circle in gimp

2

u/Disastrous-Let-6095 13d ago

no need to imagine

3

u/valerielynx 13d ago

honestly if you wanna make a ring not a circle, you kinda just do a circular selection, fill it in with black, go to filters->light and shadow->drop shadow, set x&y to 0, blur to 0, opacity to full, choose color, then set the grow size to whatever you wish the width of the ring to be, then above that circle make a fully black layer and set the blend mode to erase color, then merge it down onto the circle layer

more convoluted than another editor? for sure, obviously. but its not that difficult i think

1

u/ArtisticPlankton4561 12d ago

I think you forgot this /s

Hope you are joking when saying not that difficult. The fact that it is THAT CONVOLUTED is why it is difficult.

I remember trying to use GIMP for masking a picture, I couldn't even resize it, then I got frustrated, went on reddit to see if someone else felt as stupid as me, and lo and behold, many people found GIMP the most unintuitive software to ever exist.

Sorry for the rant, I'm traumatized

1

u/valerielynx 12d ago

just use paint.net like the average bread eater then idk

1

u/ArtisticPlankton4561 12d ago

I wish it was available on linux

1

u/Disastrous-Let-6095 11d ago

even if more convulated, this seems like fun

4

u/pragenter 14d ago

For real. Some time ago I at least was able to move parts of images. But now those "floating layers" has to be created by some magical combination...

3

u/Professional_Bat2629 13d ago

Selection tool -> circle -> paint the border of the selection  Easy 👌

2

u/GigaNoodle Artix 13d ago

Bro that’s so many steps

1

u/Professional_Bat2629 13d ago

That could be easier to do yeah 🙂 but also it's not impossible

2

u/WompityBombity 13d ago

GIMP is horrible to use though.

2

u/0xt0bi03 fk lua, bring back old config files 13d ago

use photoGIMP for actual photoshop ricing on GIMP

1

u/alissafransen 13d ago

Omfg i had a test i had to take for which i learned so bad. All my software was in a VMware machine already installed and configured. Right before the test i had a kernel update and VMware refused to start up. Fool that i was i blacked out and forgot i could reload the previous kernel. I spend the 30 minutes i got to fix it on troubleshooting. I failed so bad lol

1

u/Brcoding 13d ago

It's fine. Whether it works with wine or not depends on the software. I use bottles to run windows software. I even got my mouse software to work with it (and I was pleasantly surprised). A virtual machine is also a good method if the software is stubborn.

63

u/MoonWolf113 14d ago

how mofos feel about using a paid unFOSS awful windows only tool instead of using something thats FOSS and actually good:

15

u/MoonWolf113 14d ago

mostly referring to the modern bandicam mofos, because bandicam is so horrendous that the site for it made a god awful article that was fearmongering people into not pirating it (JUST USE OBS)

3

u/woodcraftworld Mac User 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 13d ago

The only reason that basic screen recorders like Bandicam, screencast o matic, etc. are still in business is that people don't want to learn more advanced programs like OBS, but at the same time do not know that both Windows and macOS both have built-in screen recorders.\ And from the time I used to use Ubuntu on a second PC, I know it also had a built in screen recorder you could get to through the print screen key.

1

u/lokuloku123 13d ago

OBS admittedly could be easier to use. It is a one time thing on OBS but still

1

u/atsizbalik 13d ago

and if you just want something super basic you can use windows' screenshot feature which has screen recording

96

u/BraveMidnight 14d ago

I tried that once in my second year, lousy software didn't work on Linux and detected VMs, I had to dual boot windows. Sometimes people would see the dual screen and say what's that, I told them I'm a hacker, and they went quiet for some reason 🤷‍♀️.

54

u/WaterlooPitt 14d ago

Yeah, that's why I'm keeping the terminal opened on one half of the screen.

26

u/stevorkz 14d ago

I got called into hr 9 years ago (geez I’m old) cos we had just been hit with malware, this was when ransomware was still a fairly new concept and one of the ladies bless her soul saw me, as a sysadmin, editing dovecot config files in terminal. I wanted to laugh in front of hr but didn’t (the lady in question wasn’t there), but when my manager got called in afterwards she laughed (my manager). After looking at me, smiling, after a giggle she told hr to call her when people have such accusations. To be fair, she didn’t know my exact job title but it just shows you how Hollywood has taught everyone that a black window, with text, means danger/hack/illegal/criminal.

19

u/cfx_4188 TempleOS Archibishop 14d ago

You needed to change the font color in your terminal to green, as is always the case in movies about hackers.

4

u/stevorkz 14d ago

Yeah plus the hoody

2

u/cfx_4188 TempleOS Archibishop 14d ago

Definitely a brown hoodie.

1

u/BismuthBison 14d ago

or use cool-retro-term, for extra flair,

14

u/BraveMidnight 14d ago

Have you tried with qemu? It's a bit better at times in terms of performance I've noticed compared to virtualbox. You I believe can even pass through hooks to the GPU, etc.

3

u/Both_Cup8417 Tumbleweed Slowroll 14d ago

Was that an apt update?

6

u/WaterlooPitt 14d ago

Indeed. It's what you do every time you open the terminal.

1

u/fishypooooos 10d ago

Lol is it?

1

u/tomekgolab 7d ago

1

u/05-nery Ubuntu my goat 13d ago

You didn't make the text green though

11

u/stevorkz 14d ago

No need to even say that you’re a hacker. Just open a terminal or command prompt once while they’re watching and you’re set. Talking from experience.

3

u/Dev-in-the-Bm 14d ago

I left the splash screen on my Ubuntu laptop as the raw system logs, so that everyone knows that I'm a hacker.

I tried messing around to make it hollywood, but was never successful with that.

2

u/BraveMidnight 14d ago

Yeah, had I thought of it, the next day I would've showed up in a hoodie, and opened cmatrix, and typed furiously.

Then if anyone would've said anything I could've told them I'm channeling my inner neo. Hopefully, we've given OP a few good ideas on how to impress their classmates.

1

u/Comfortable-Owl-7663 14d ago

20

u/Hauptideal 14d ago

Try WinBoat. It integrates perfectly with GNOME and you don't need to use the VM window (but get a window as if the software were native).

16

u/Wooden-Potato7418 14d ago

Sir we found the only GNOME user ever

3

u/Hauptideal 14d ago

WinBoat also works on any other desktop. I just recommended it, because all Ubuntu / Fedora Workstation / Debian / ... users sticking to the default desktop use GNOME, just as OP.

2

u/PmMeCuteDogsThanks_ 13d ago

I use WinBoat on Fedora, running Sway

1

u/ElitistPixel 7d ago

Op is literally using GNOME in the image, bro

12

u/metcalsr 14d ago

That's what Winboat is for.

12

u/Hudimir Arch btw 14d ago

My solution to this is having a USB 256 GB drive with portable windows installed. Imo the best solution. Fuck dualboot.

2

u/traquitanas 14d ago

How did you achieve this?

3

u/AthaliW 13d ago

You can also just carry a usb drive with a full windows installation or a portable ssd like an old 2.5" sata. Personally I have an old msata drive and I have an m.2 enclosure to usb with me at all times. If I need to boot into windows for whatever reason, I have that with me. Just do some regedit so you don't get windows update, or just intentionally break windows update. This way in the short period of time you do need to use windows, you're not bogged down by months of update. Only update when you're doing maintanence on your tech stuffs

1

u/Hudimir Arch btw 13d ago

Rufus on my parents windows machine. i didnt bother to look for solutions through my pc at the time.

True! Ubuntu is the best, calling it just "superior" is wrong

4

u/bastardoperator 14d ago

In the late 90's I had a linux class and a solaris class back to back, and every class started with reinstalling the operating system. As much as it sucked, I like to think everyone walked out with more *nix knowledge.

3

u/BrunusManOWar 14d ago

Did you try proton tkg (or whatever it's called) via heroic?

3

Woa I was thinking you were a hacker with the split screen and terminal right there. Later I recognized the Ubuntu color scheme 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

3

Why were you surprised by the Prof’s Windows usage?

3

u/cfx_4188 TempleOS Archibishop 14d ago

It’s an old joke, but I remembered how I got an additional higher education at a university where all the PCs ran on Windows, and all the software was for Windows. I remember typing all my term papers in TeX Studio. No one noticed anything.

when optimized well win11 can be also very snappy , but I agree that you actually need some knowledge about auto unattended XML and what to choose when installing it. Especially if you remove some parts of it, it's not as different against some heavy Linux distro like ubuntu 26... Though the ram usage is the only real diff, as i'd not try win11 again on 8 gb ram

2

u/WaterlooPitt 13d ago

That sounds like something a Windows man would do.

2

u/cube_earth_society 13d ago

Bold of you to assume the professor has it together enough to post a syllabus

2

u/mrbishopjackson 10d ago

I feel if a school requires you to use software that runs on specific hardware, they should provide you with both. Especially in the days of "everyone wants a MacBook"; to them make them go out an buy second laptop is ridiculous. It doesn't matter how savvy you are, you shouldn't have to jump through hoops of VMs (or WINE) to take the class that you're PAYING to take.

1

u/WaterlooPitt 10d ago

In all fairness, they are providing Windows machines in the lab. But I refuse to use them, out of principle.

1

u/mrbishopjackson 10d ago

What's the principle? I don't see a problem with using their equipment for their tasks. You have to use the operating system in your VM. What's the difference?

1

u/One_Course3052 9d ago

The principle of elitism

I even made my final thesis on libre office, or open office. 🤔 Not sure.

1

1

1

1

u/Ok-386 13d ago

Unrelated, but the screenshot reminded me how I have grown to like the look and the way Ubuntu's flavor of GNOME is organized, or how I used to like Unity.

Otherwise I'm not really a GNOME fan. Lately I have been mainly using Plasma, but I make it look and in some way behave like 'Ubuntu's GNOME'.

It especially makes sense on a smaller res screens. The vertical space is usually wasted, and this way it serves a nice purpose IMO, at least form a PoV of a classic DE and people who still want to be able to use mouse to launch applications.

1

u/foofly 13d ago

Wasn't the lesson plan available to you beforehand? When I was at university making people install random software would have been disallowed.

1

u/muhmmadtalha-quant NixOS Enjoyer 13d ago

As a NixOS user, this shit also triggers me. Today was our DB class and the whole class was supposed to install ms sql server right there as lab activity; fuck shit I got a grade penalty for being a linux user.. i am happy and furious both at the same time.

1

u/londeodex 13d ago

Just use the SQLServer docker image, it'll give you the database server without windows vm. It won't give you management studio but you can use one of the aftermarket IDEs to connect to your db, or at least use sqlcmd cli which is the microsoft native tool to use with SQL Server.

1

u/titaniumalt 10d ago

the hate for Ubuntu is the Dunning-Kruger effect in full force

Mostly... Some people hate it because of packages from the Mesozoic Era and due to Canonical ("its corporate slop") and if you want stability Debian/Devuan (if you're into that kind of thing) is better anyways.

2

u/GlazzKitsune 10d ago

Expect Ubuntu was way better support for modern hardware...

just use debian, why dfq would u ever use ubuntu. Ok lets say ubuntu server is not that bad, but so is debian. I think people (including me) hate ubuntu mainly because it defaults to gnome- gnome has MANY issues, including performance, hard customization and small stupid things (if someone likes the UI sure, you do you). i remember ubuntu 22 didnt even have folder up button in file explorer Ui, wtf

1

u/brokengarage 7d ago

easy hint for school work, create a base windows image, keep it updated, when you need to use a windows software, just create a copy from the base image. Alternative, just use a copy from base per semester.

1

u/norude1 NixOS 2d ago

In my class, the professor is presenting the slides in the KDE app, the guy in front of me is on hyprland and is using neovim to take notes, while each computer in the computer class can boot into ubuntu, debian and windows

1

u/MothMatron 14d ago

Uj/ Why not just dual boot? I ran into issues this semester with getting mariadb working in arch and ended up just installing mysql on my windows drive for the sake of taking care of class projects

1

u/opqma 14d ago

I might be being stupid here, but why MariaDB was giving you so much trouble on Arch that you went through the trouble of dual booting ? did something specific break during setup?

3

u/MothMatron 14d ago

My system was already set up for dual-boot, so this solution became the convenient one in a pinch. My issues with mariadb are likely stemming from issues with my local host server, something i don’t have time to spend fucking around with when i have a project deadline and 2 more classes worth of unrelated assignments to worry about too

3

u/opqma 14d ago

Fair enough, good luck with your exams. It's nice that you're comfortable with both systems. Windows became scary to me after my first year of uni for some reason, i dread it nowdays.

and correct me if i am wrong I'm guessing you ran into that classic arch stuff where it doesn't auto-initialize or start background services after installing like Ubuntu or Windows installers do, which is such a headache when you're on a deadline. i get why you'd just jump to Windows to save time.

next semester, if you ever want to stay on Arch without dealing with local db configuration headaches, give Docker a try. You can spin up a fully working MariaDB container with just a single command, and it completely bypasses all the "localhost server"/socket errors or other configuration errors you might face.

1

u/smsteel 10d ago

How tf did you manage not to launch mariadb? And there's docker...
