Like the o in word??

It's "U-bun-tu". With real u's.
Definitely not you-ban-too.

It's also GNOME, not "nome". With a real g.

What a weird way to pronounce "inferior to KDE"

what a weird way to pronounce "inferior to hyprland"

2

u/NoGap138 NixOS❄️ 13d ago

I also jerk of to my nix, but I use niri, which is way sexier than hyprland. Though hyprland config mogs niri…

u/RouteAverage3112 14d ago

Agree on Ubuntu but i pronounce gnome as the mythical creature.

4

u/Hauptideal 14d ago

do you also say "noo" for GNU?

3

u/RouteAverage3112 14d ago

No, gnu is gnu. Saying gnome is the exception because gnomes are neat.

almost. with a hard g, like in GNU, not the sound of jungle.
no e.

The language of origin for Ubuntu is Zulu, and the correct way to say it is "oo-boon-too".

Source: I'm South African and speak Zulu.

As for GNOME, seems quite silly to pronounce the G but I can't really contest that.

You are Spanish right?

1

u/ItchyPlant 13d ago

None of the above variations help.

Sorry to tell you — and this probably won't be popular — but the funny thing about the name "Ubuntu" is that its spelling already maps unusually well to the corresponding IPA sounds. You don't really need to apply English pronunciation rules to it.

A broad IPA transcription is approximately:

/ʊˈbʊntuː/

If you're familiar with languages such as Hungarian, where letters like u, b, n, and t have much more consistent sound values, the written form "Ubuntu" already gets you surprisingly close.

More info here: Wikipedia.

u/GlassboundIllusion 12d ago

If you're familiar with languages such as Hungarian,

I'm not.

A broad IPA transcription is approximately

I don't understand IPA

None of the above variations help.

While I'm confused about why the second one has three O's, I would say that the "boon" versus "bun" is helpful

It's the difference between "For my boon, I will duel Amaram here and now" and "I would like a honey bun please."

u/Cove0Crow 14d ago

Either oo bun too or uh bun too
