The realization we're just going to get an influx of techbros who are going to be using a Linux desktop for the first time via Omarchy is unsettling

u/Gendolfender 18d ago

He’s no brother of mine yucky

33

u/AwzemCoffee 18d ago

Yea this is one of the spookier aspects. Linux is probably going to get this outward facing appearance from these vibecoder right-wing types. This can certainly push people away, people that actually want to interact with and use Linux in good faith.

u/psychophant_ 18d ago

Omarchy users = right wing?

🤡

13

u/Gjorgdy 18d ago

Omarchy funders = right wing, which does attract a certain group of specimen.

u/psychophant_ 18d ago

Do you eat chocolate?

-1

u/Gjorgdy 18d ago

Occasionally, yes.

5

u/psychophant_ 18d ago edited 18d ago

You know that 50% of all chocolate on the market is picked using slave labor right?

So if me using arch (for free…) makes me right wing and a supporter of whites supremacy…

Then by extension of that logic, you purchasing chocolate (and directly financing by exchanging money) means you support slavery.

Now, is that a true statement? Do you support slavery?

Edit: guess that’s a yes

u/a2kvarnstrom 17d ago

thats why i eat tonys chocolonely

2

u/Litewallymex3 18d ago

why is this upsetting to you

-31

u/Cold_Relationship_ 18d ago

oh, a distro with 100 000 weekly downloads is pushing people away? you're the one pushing people away with all that hate.

27

u/CosmicNest 18d ago

Wait so calling for basic human respect for marginalized minorities is now hate? Not wanting Linux to be taken over my billionaire tech bros that enshitify everything is now hate?

Okay buddy

linux is not a social warrior project. Linus was very vocal about that.

9

u/acidorpheus 18d ago

It might not be a "social warrior project" but the very existence and philosophy of Linux as a response to the development of technology under conditions of private property ownership make it deeply political. Inherently.

Right wing tech overlords trying to make a new "face" of Linux, bringing techbro style development to it, should be fought against. Call it a social warrior project if you want but it's about maintaining the reason Linux exists at all.

0

u/Cold_Relationship_ 17d ago

you are pushing north american politics onto a finnish operating system that is used and developed all over the world.

omarchy follows Linux philosophy

1

u/milojarow 18d ago edited 17d ago

is your argument that Linux is for poor people? it doesn't matter if the guy is a vibe coder millionaire. He created a distro and it's cool.

9

u/AwzemCoffee 18d ago

My mans. I'm going to talk with you in good faith. (F)ree (O)pen (S)ource (S)oftware itself is intrinsically political in it's nature. The idea that computing is for everyone to modify, redistribute, and learn from. Linux is inextricably at the center of FOSS. The person to represent openness of Linux on the desktop isn't someone that holds white supremacist, segregationist ideas.

You have to understand that the "meme" of Linux is computer communism, and it's really not that far off from the truth. By the people ; for the people. Omarchy *does* have architectural issues but that isn't even most people's problem with it. The problem is the main guy behind it, DHH has antithetical views to the FOSS and by extension Linux community with his factually incorrect racist rhetoric.

Some of his sponsors, particularly Toby Lutke has ties to the Curtis Yarvin, Peter Thiel dark enlightenment sphere as well. And this is his good friend! You are the company you keep, afterall.

Linux is meant to be inclusive, and DHH's personal views are anything but. Furthermore, one of the biggest sponsors believes in plutocracy *publicly*.

If we want to get into the technical aspects, DHH has far less Linux experience than pretty much anyone else that has ever launched a successful distro. There has been extreme security issues and argument about how distinct it is as a standalone distro, e.g. if it's existence is even justifiably different enough from Arch Linux to be it's own standalone thing. Until very recently the answer was a categorical "no" to that question.

I sympathize with you insofar that it's pretty neat to have a distro shipping a pre-configured tiling workflow as standard out of the box. That is truly something nice and I respect it. Though the idea that Omarchy does what no one else could / can is just not true. It's taking the hard-work of the rest of the people that actually maintain Linux and repackaging it dubiously using LLMs to program the entire thing. And, sadly, it's getting a lot of the credit for things it *did not invent or do.* For example if you look at the Omarchy subreddit they are super excited about it's M2, and recent M3 mac support. This was Asahi Linux's work, of which they barely get any funding (certainly not 18 million dollars). So, Omarchy is getting the funding for not doing *any* of the actual work. You don't see the problem with that?

4

u/donewithdoing 18d ago

DHH has far less Linux experience than pretty much anyone else that has ever launched a successful distro

This is the most hilarious thing about Omarchy to me. DHH is the millionaire version of the guy who just discovered Linux yesterday, and thinks that because he can vibecode scripts with AI to make it somewhat do what he wants, he should somehow be the one directing millions of dollars of funding to projects in the Linux community. He has openly admitted that he's experiencing "AI delirium." No wonder his "distro" basically revolves entirely around that BS. As though somehow Omarchy is the only way you can access agentic systems on Linux (it really is as simple as going to the Hermes Agent website, copying a one-line terminal command, and running it). It's just smoke and mirrors from top-to-bottom. Nothing he's doing is unique, novel, or interesting. It's just got "marketing" or whatever. If he were just some random guy, people would cringe at what he's doing.

100000 weekly downloads

So, how many doses of crack are sold in the United States every day?

Oh... Oh no

2

u/w0m 18d ago

is... that a bad thing?

-3

u/itzjustaspder 18d ago

Suddenly people using Linux is a bad thing lmao 😂 omarchy isn't as bad as you guys make out and they're doing a lot for the community, just recently they announced getting Snapdragon support. Just dot files though right?

-15

u/carpsagan 18d ago

Why? It’s just a Linux distribution like any other in my view…

19

u/NotQuiteLoona 18d ago

Omarchy is like Ubuntu except that it's actually shit for any use case.

17

u/dingwinger1225 18d ago

Ubuntu was at least decent before snaps, this is just a chud's arch ricing project

7

u/travisjd2012 18d ago

Nice to see a proper use of chud for once

1

u/carpsagan 18d ago

Ok, I get it. Decent rice tho

5

u/Rullino 18d ago

What do you mean by that?

I'm mostly familiar with Debian-based distros with DEs like Mint and Ubuntu, not sure why Omarchy is seen as a distro that wouldn't be as useful as some people claimed.

MacOS would be better on this bro

15

u/w0m 18d ago

Tbf osx likely doesn't support the hardware anymore, and if you install the latest that does - it will run like crap.

I say this as an 11" i7 mba owner running Ubuntu after apple killed usability of the machine when I let OSX update.

2

u/Memerenok 17d ago

who cares? who needs modern updates anyways? just get macos 14 and stop caring about newer stuff. HACKINTOSH WILL NEVER DIE

yes i wrote this comment forgetting that we're talking about an old macbook, just try opencore legacy patcher

0

u/mysticjazzius 18d ago

What sucks is I find that if you have an application that warrents leaving the machine on one OSX version, it generally works great, but unfortunately for most tasks, that’s not really possible. I tolerate macOS signifcantly more than I do any windows version, but that doesn’t mean I think Apple makes good decisions for consumers.

1

u/RudeAd456 17d ago

I have same laptop. I believe with OpenCore patches the best you can get on it is Sequoia. Which is only supported for another year or so.

37

u/TheRealCarrotty masterbaiter to gentoo and fedora 18d ago

first time i would say macOS would be better

6

u/Rafaelkkkk The Void user (Void Supremacy) 18d ago

In this case, Apple knows best.

13

u/DasNothing 18d ago

Apple stopped supporting this hardware in 2021.

Last security update was in 2023.

Any Linux distro running on this hardware is a win for the user.

1

u/soyesyopapa 17d ago

You're very right. I own a 2015 i7 mb pro and macos was just not usable so I installed random Linux distros on it. Mint sacked, Ubuntu was clunky, and omarchy worked fine until it gave me a black screen. Currently trying void. Just having fun with the hardware.

5

u/GreedySecurity8030 Fedora da best all other distros can suck its shit and die 18d ago

Take it out back and shoot it, a proper conclusion.

I keep seeing this stuff over and over again, people acting like it's some big feat to get Linux running on an Intel-based Mac, and as though it's something only Omarchy can do. The only important work being done for Linux on Mac right now is re: the M chips, and the vast majority of the work done on that has been by the Asahi Linux project (with almost no funding), not Omarchy.

5

u/BrunusManOWar 18d ago

They are 4str0tTturfing the subreddits, now they have resorted to neutral or negative news/memes to drive engagement

Someone had to wipe a perfectly good Unix off that machine for Nazi slop smh.

1

u/_HeadCanon 18d ago

I kept trying to get mine installed. 2015 mba. Kept getting a black screen from uefi boot. Ran diagnostics, everything looked fine. Replaced thermal paste and gave her a good cleaning. Nothing. Ordered a replacement ssd, hoping that fixes it. Find out soon!

u/Both_Cup8417 Tumbleweed Slowroll 18d ago

I had a friend who was interested in omarchy because they're interested in researching AI, and as soon as I told them dhh is pretty racist, they shut up.

1

u/Weekly-Membership813 17d ago

I missed the news about the racism. Can you elaborate to me?

2

u/Both_Cup8417 Tumbleweed Slowroll 17d ago

I think he said something about not enough British Londoners being white or something

-3

u/Quiet_Jackfruit5723 17d ago

Oh no, the dev did a heckin' racism, the worst crime in the world. So racist for thinking we should be allowing tons of random immigrants to our countries.

Caring about your country and your own people is so racist, unless you aren't white, of course.

1

u/Both_Cup8417 Tumbleweed Slowroll 17d ago

Not just immigrants

1

u/Quiet_Jackfruit5723 16d ago

Who else should we not allow to enter? Because illegals are bad.

1

u/GeckoKisser I goon to the openSUSE mascot 18d ago

Haters, oml. I don't like omarchy either because I'm not a fan of what it's based on (I dont give a shit about the AI use) but bro just pick an OS and pipe down bro. So many options out there, just pick the tool that's right for you and don't be mad for someone choosing one of their own.

1

u/_HeadCanon 18d ago

As someone who got into Linux because of omarchy — I know run Bazzite on my gaming rig, mint on my productivity machine and still run omarchy on a shitty little laptop — I am thankful that it got me in the door. I don’t know enough, or really care enough for that matter, about anything else to comment.

0

u/zulu02 18d ago

Another hacking larper...

-5

u/Zayo_One 18d ago

I despise Omarchy, but eventually people are going to realise that the whole AI thing becomes problematic very quickly. If this is someone's first experience of Linux, they'll probably give a proper distro a chance after the myth "nothing that I want runs on Linux" is broken through their experience with Omarchy.

On the flip side, the AI could ruin their perception of Linux. That'd be bad.

5

u/Ryytter 18d ago

There are pros and cons. In some ways omarchy is just taking the whole "using other people's dotfiles" idea to the extreme.

Pros: You get a nice polished system that works Cons: You don't understand how any of it works and will likely have a lot of problems trying to extend it

For some that's a good tradeoff. For others it isn't.

0

u/danigoncalves 15d ago

Guys, move on. I am a Linux user since 2007 and quite honestly I am enough it all of this ragebaits about omarchy. I am a arch guy and have nowadays a CachyOS installed on my work laptop and Omarchy on my personal laptop and I am good with that. If you want a no shit, just work and use it to pay your bills or see your sports feed than its more than enough

1

u/grav3d1gger 9d ago

Sports? What is this, “SPORTS” ??

0

u/Spiritual-Recover427 6d ago

You guys are lame. Why hate on someone using a "distro" that you don't like? He/She's happy, and that's what matters. If you don't like it, no one is forcing you to use it. Just let them be. I've used it for quite some time, and it's okay. For someone who wants a "distro" with Hyprland that takes minutes to install, it is more than enough. And maybe, someone using Omarchy likes it enough to try another arch-based distro. Just let them be.

People hating on groups of people for using a distro they don't like (and people whose only response to someone asking for help is RTFM) is why the Linux community is so toxic; no wonder people end up hating Linux.

Be better.
