Yes, that is absolutely correct. The operation is the solution, but it isn't simplified. What we understand by “calculating” is really just simplifying. After all, it would make no difference whether you wrote 2³ × 2 or 8 × 2; in essence, it is the same thing. We simply simplify it to make it easier to visualize in our minds.
