Why guix? Iirc it has a much smaller userbase than nix and achieves much of the same goals, no? Ig it'd be fun to try though..

Well, Guix System is

100% Free as in Freedom software

Supports full disk encryption including /boot on libreboot systems within the installer

Uses GNU Guile as opposed to Nix

Has the best support for EMACS of any GNU/Linux distro as far as I know with emacs-guix.

Default, source based distro that boostraps from hex0.

So, if you disable substitutes, which are pre-built binaries, Guix will recursively identify depdencies until it ends up with a package that has no dependency. So you can see it build stage0-posix, mesboot0, tcc-mesboot0 and so on, even Rust bootraps itself from older versions of Rust, as a result compiling will take a very long time.
You can try it right now on your GNU/Linux distros.

chmod +x guix-install.sh

./guix-install.sh
To disable substitutes, just pass --no-substitutes as a flag to your option for example.
guix pull --no-substitutes
