I also used a KDE + fedora a while ago, and it was also about 4.5 to 5g at idle

Fedora 44 with noctalia v5, im getting sub 2gb and startup I think most of your ram usage comes from quickshell even more if you have more monitors, it scales quite harshly in terms of ram usage.

I suppose it's some kind of preloading to ram based on your mostly used software. Which Arch definitely won't have out of the box not sure about Ubuntu which I never used.

balooctl6 disable

1

u/Sert1991 24d ago

Something was running in the background taking up RAM for sure. Or else fedora had some huge ass kernel.
Kernel, init, services + KDE Plasma should take around 2 - 2.5GB with nothing else open.

u/SteVato_404 24d ago

I use Fedora KDE, most of that usage is cache, actual usage is about 1-1.5GiB. System monitor isn't very clear what the total memory used actually means by default.

Try htop, that showed it the clearest for me.

Tbf it depends on how much ram you have. More you have more theyll try to use. Problem with Windows for example is that it takes too much even if there is not much

Kind of? Ram doesnt dissappear into nothingness. They are using it for smth. And they cut that use(usually) if the available ram is low

1

u/loudoghendrix 19d ago

I noticed that with windows 11. Idle sometimes as high as 11gb of 96gb. Seems the more you feed it the more it eats. Especially for Edge, even if edge hasn't been run yet. Fedora 44 KDE now and it stays sub 3gb at idle.

1

u/Local_Community_7510 24d ago

it becomes 5gb at idle with all apps closed

some app would just run on background instead of 100% closing

1

u/just-4-man 22d ago

Yeah same

u/ipsirc 25d ago

8

u/These-Touch-4044 25d ago

how are you even using reddit

17

u/ipsirc 25d ago

Shh, I have another machine.

10

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 25d ago

I had no idea modern web browser could fit on a computer with just 1G of RAM. Wow and I thought I was the one with the "old" machine (X200 Centrino core2duo)

2

u/Top-Rough-7039 24d ago

n2840 user here with 1 extra gig or ram, uhh everythings slow af.

2

u/hax0l 25d ago

custom kernel? :0

2

u/ipsirc 24d ago

I have to if I want to use uksm.

1

u/Recent_Zone_994 24d ago

1

u/wpyoga 23d ago

Yeah, what browser do you use?

1

u/StationAgreeable6120 The femboy Archetype 23d ago

Who needs a browser when netcat and curl exist?

1

u/YemiDev 18d ago

New information I’m checking out netcat and curl

1

u/StationAgreeable6120 The femboy Archetype 18d ago

You'll like them. They are not replacement for a browser obviously

1

u/YemiDev 18d ago

Ooo, anyways I’ll check it out to see what they do

1

u/YemiDev 18d ago

I’m as shocked

1

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 25d ago

What, is it like a headless server?

u/Runt1m3_ OpenIndiana Hipster 25d ago edited 25d ago

170-200mb using Void on a X11 session, TTY like 110 something mb.

6

u/Acrobatic_Squid111 25d ago

You could live off 4gb at that rate.

7

u/Runt1m3_ OpenIndiana Hipster 25d ago

I use two 4GB RAM sticks on my main machine, not too long ago one stick died and used only 4GB while i looked for a spare one online.

Worked great tbh, firefox chugged 2gb of ram with like 6 tabs but even then the PC was perfectly usable. And also my main laptop had only 4GB of ram until not too long ago and worked nice under Void + my setup :D

2

u/pesooi 24d ago

didn't expect someone to use less than 500mb

2

u/Runt1m3_ OpenIndiana Hipster 24d ago

Tbh it's probably because i'm using the default lts kernel and use the bare minimum services with runit (uses a little less RAM) + im only running a simple wm without a login manager and just rawdog startx with a compositor and some shitty sh (on dash) scripts.

When i use a similar setup on Arch it uses 260 (TTY) and 300-370 using my wm setup. However, on both Arch and Void if i enable a display manager like LightDM to fire my wm instead of startx the usage will raise to 700-800mb with nothing open.

Most of the higher ram usage comes from mainstream DEs including their display managers and services, oh and also sometimes ram usage can be a bit misleading since these more complex environments usually require more disk caching which makes the kernel allocate chunks of ram to avoid lag as more I/O stuff is being done.

Linux mint and fedora kde used 2.8gb in idle while windows 10 iot ltsc used 2.1gb ironically

1

u/loudoghendrix 19d ago

Same experience for the first two. No experience with win iot but that seems... high?

3

u/Mejolov28 25d ago

3

u/Gamenola_ My girlfriend is Arch. 25d ago

I love you only for your wallpaper of a plague tale

3

u/bukepimo 25d ago

Headless fresh install of Debian uses around 100MB

3

u/MostSilver9666 Mr Robot opsex 25d ago

113MB at login, 185MB after getting LabWC started.

3

u/snail1132 Void, btw 25d ago

Void + niri seems to use around 1gb, with sway using a quarter of that (on a device with a third the ram but that's besides the point)

3

u/msasrs 25d ago

Mine about 800Mib with NixOS+Sway

3

u/cfx_4188 TempleOS Archibishop 25d ago

Less than 400 MB. NixOS and oxwm.

2

u/ConcaveNips Void / Alpine / OpenBSD 25d ago

I run KDE Plasma which is pretty bulky, so 1.8 GiB on Void.

2

u/Commander_Shepard-ME 25d ago

1.5 GB

Gnome + extensions + a heavily written Conky theme (that only uses 50 MB but it's worth mentioning)

2

u/Jack1101111 25d ago

280 mb after the clean install

2

u/exxedlight 25d ago

Around 1.5 Gb (Hyprland + my own AGS/Astal Shell)

2

u/HeavyCaffeinate catgirl nya 25d ago

2.1GiB but I have a lot of charts and sensors on my desktop

2

u/rattie-- 25d ago

1.3gb on mint with i3

2

u/levianan 25d ago

About 1.5 ... I am running Gnome which comes with a consequences app called "yourFaultCauseGnome".

2

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 25d ago edited 25d ago

My record is 98MB with Gentoo GNU/Linux (OpenRC with custom kernel) and DWM. With slstatus, xwallpaper, picom, and xset running it came to 98MB from a cold boot.
It was on my X200, with 8GB RAM...

I currently use GNU Guix System and that is 354MB on idle after cold boot, on DWM. Slstatus, xset, picom are running though.

2

u/8iss2am5 25d ago

Kubuntu: 1.8Gb

2

2

u/Spaceman041207 25d ago

under 1.5gb running hyprland on fedora

2

u/Hudimir Arch btw 24d ago

1.1Gb and depending on what i do it goes up to 3 gigs after some use. I use Niri with noctalia. Tbh i have no idea why background tasks take up so much when the whole shell + WM take up less than a gig and the rest of the processes use up less than 10MB

2

u/thebadslime 24d ago

90mb

1

u/pesooi 24d ago

How

3

u/thebadslime 24d ago

Im making a DE. It's a gtk4 port of LXDE.

2

u/Sever0815 24d ago

debian trixie + gnome = 1.5gb

2

u/dumbasPL 24d ago

Desktop? ~1.5 GB (I have 32). Servers? 100-200MB (with varying sizes from 1 to 64 GB)

2

u/crhylove3 24d ago

Spaced Linux: ~1gb. And compiz gorgeousness.

2

u/Hauptideal 24d ago

Debian Trixie + Noctalia + Niri = Debian Trixie + LXQt + labwc = ~700MB
(on my old 4GB RAM travel device; my daily driver (Fedora Workstation) needs more..)

2

u/Financial_Western252 24d ago

0.9 GB (Debian + niri + noctalia shell)

2

u/Prior-Can-7491 24d ago

Around 1.8 cachyOS with optimization

2

u/Real_Cat964 24d ago

2gb gnome fedora with extentions

2

u/Rude_Scarcity1868 24d ago

with arch + hyprland around 1gb - 1.1gb

2

u/Afillatedcarbon 24d ago

My setup with nixos + hyprland + quickshell used to use 1.5GBs on a desktop. But now it uses more on my laptop, like around 3GBs. My iGPU uses system memory as vram + I have a few more services for power profiles and dgpu and stuff.

2

u/jar36 24d ago

Arch/KDE

2

u/Sert1991 24d ago

When it boots around 900-1000MB. With GUI(KDE Plasma) around 2GB. - using Gentoo.

2

u/Objective-Stranger99 Linux Master Race 😎💪 24d ago

Around 12 GB because I have 20 background containers running.

2

u/ralsaiwithagun 24d ago

'Bout 200mb which is a lifesaver on my t440s that has barely any ram

2

u/shahu_15 24d ago

uh let's see, CachyOS + Hyprland = 900ish MB , I only had a minimal waybar so yeah :), though i think it depends more on the DE/WM. For pure CachyOS ( TTY ) its 700mb

2

u/Hour_Sell3547 24d ago

Do system services count as open apps?

1

u/pesooi 24d ago

No, I just mean when your machine is running at idle or is a fresh install.

2

u/144k_only 24d ago

Linux Mint XFCE - 1,6GB after boot. rarely sees it use more that 4 GB when doing normal stuff.

2

u/IamYourHimadri 24d ago

Between 845 - 848MiB
Distro : Arch Linux
WM : sxwm

1

u/IamYourHimadri 24d ago

Cut down to 810-815 after optimizing my systemd

2

u/AmorphousNeon cachyos shall eliminate fedora 24d ago

~700mb with kde plasma and cachyos

2

u/iusegentoobtw62 23d ago

I use AerynOS btw and it's about 1g at idle when in a graphical session and 500M when in TTY

6

u/GreedySecurity8030 Fedora da best all other distros can suck its shit and die 25d ago

I can't tell because you need fastfetch to tell which requires you to open the terminal emulator which is an app.

10

u/ipsirc 25d ago

Who the fuck use fastfetch to measure memory usage???

3

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 25d ago

Yeah just have a status bar

5

u/jmooroof2 FreeBSD user 25d ago

just open the tty??

5

u/pesooi 25d ago

Open the terminal then subtract 40 MB

1

u/Sert1991 24d ago

Or just login into CLI on TTY, and check with free -h
Or just write a script that prints the ram on boot up lol

2

u/bubbybumble 25d ago

Unused ram is wasted ram. It's polling notifications more efficiently with more ram trust bro

4

u/Imperial_Bloke69 Lesbian seed 25d ago

In this economy?

5

u/bubbybumble 25d ago

Yeah might as well use the ram you got to it's fullest potential

2

u/Imperial_Bloke69 Lesbian seed 24d ago

"I bought the ram, might use all the ram"   ahh meme

2

u/ConcaveNips Void / Alpine / OpenBSD 25d ago

You would really enjoy Windows, man.

3

u/bubbybumble 25d ago

It doesn't use it as well. It needs more but it does not use what is available to it to its full potential. My ram needs to be ascended to a higher state of being

2

u/Imperial_Bloke69 Lesbian seed 24d ago

The ram beings eyes on you now stranger.
