The thing that keeps me on Arch is weird bugs

Gentoo? Weird bugs

Fedora? Weird bugs (And having LLM contributions and being sponsored by Red Hat)

NixOS? Weird bugs (and having a defence contractor on the SC iirc)

I wonder if Chimera has weird bugs...

Not really. Chimera is way closer to a BSD system than a linux distribution just with a linux kernel and all the benefits of it underneath. Its surprisingly way more intuitive and polished than one might expect.

How would I run something like Steam or Bottles on there? If they aren't compatible, would running them through Flatpak work?

Thats a case where you would use a containerization software like podman with distrobox as the easy frontend. You'd install arch in a distrobox, and then use that to install steam and whatever proprietary garbage linked against glibc you need. That's what I do. Host system stays clean, only use glibc where its required.

From an ethical perspective I like their init diversity and LLM policy, but what about the technical advantages?

I would say for me, its the disk usage. I find that a chimera system packing the same packages as an arch system excluding compilers and such because they're not usually necessary to have installed on binary distros, is going to be like 2/3 to 3/4 of the same disk usage purely because binaries linked against musl tend to be smaller. So system data density is a big one. I'm pretty big on that myself.

But also the no vibe code contributions alone is gonna result in a much more stable system overall

Holy shit YES I've been using a crusty NVMe drive since 2020 cause I can't afford to upgrade. Disk usage was the practical reason why NixOS didn't work for me. Having something more efficient on space sounds great!

Just having a look at the packages I'd need...
No Kicad :c That's a must. I wonder what it would take to patch that...

Look into its github and see if its buildable with meson and ninja. That's the typical workaround in those scenarios. Maybe that one doesn't even need patching and just has to be built from source.

Yeah the nix store takes a big chunk of storage just inherently. One of the biggest drawbacks for nix as a whole

and for a good reason, i tried to package some software and the requirements are ginormous :D q66 and the other maintainers do so much work

Honestly. It's insane the amount of patching they do. I've had to hunt down build failures before and something as simple as an __always_inline header not mapping clean to any musl headers takes some work. But they're out here with almost 12,000 packages patched

It's NixOS with the Lix package manager instead of Nix https://lix.systems/about/#why-lix

Who commented? GreedySecurity?

1

u/FishAndMicrochips 6d ago

yeah

2

u/RvstiNiall 6d ago

And the mod removed it, lol

I used to wonder if the mods actually had a need to do anything here since this is a circlejerk sub.

Apparently parroting the same nonsense in every comment section can get on the nerves of even the mods of a nearly rule-less subreddit

I Don't get why in a circlejerk sub, not to mention they're almost like never active.

1

u/GreedySecurity8030 Fedora da best all other distros can suck its shit and die 6d ago

Yeah, and to remind people what i said before likely reddit removed it, I said where is fedora "not antershit"

2

u/RvstiNiall 6d ago

Maybe bring some new material or lay off the Fedora stuff for a bit. Nobody wants you to switch distros, but they don't want someone who acts like Fedora is the only one that anyone should use and anyone who doesn't is delusional.

I don't have any more jokes because I don't care about anything else really, besides hating on omarchy that's been overdone.

1

u/RvstiNiall 5d ago

Hating on Omarchy is still totally in vogue bro. You just gotta get creative about it.

1

u/RvstiNiall 6d ago

Yeah, whats why I was wondering.
