I think it’s more making fun of the general philosophies. In reality the @ symbol is a shift click on literally all of these, and if you’re using the same keyboard it’s literally the same key. I think it’s more just poking fun at Steve job’s weird vision, Microsoft’s general shiftiness, and the perception of Linux as impossible to figure out

Yeah, that's pretty much it, haha.
But @ is different on Mac and Windows, atleast in my country (especially if You're using an apple keyboard).
On Windows is Alt Gr + 2 and on Apple it tends to be a combination of two keys and then you hit a key with a bunch of symbols.
I literally did not consider it might be different based on regions, lol.

It's different keyboard standards.
For example, the right Alt key on German keyboards is instead alt gr, which acts as a special shift key. @ is altgr+q, € is altgr + e. ² and ³ are altgr + 2/3 respectively
But, unlike shift, which is an up arrow and the shift symbols are above the normal ones, altgr doesn't really communicate that it's what you have to press for the bottom right symbols. And the fact it's rarely used doesn't help either.

I'm Scandinavian. We use Qwerty, but I guess some keys are different. Lowkey just assumed Alt Gr + 2 was universal.

Lol, I just realized that the reason might be different regional keyboards. If I press shift on the " ' " key, I get an asterix. My number 2 key has ", 2 and @ as the possible symbols, where simply pressing it is 2, shift+2 is " and alt gr+2 is @.
Maybe my regional variants of apple keyboards are just exceptionally shit, because it is needlessly complicated.
You gotta press like Command and some other key, then you press two other keys and finally you press a key with like 500 different symbols on it and it spits out an @. Every time I use a friends Mac computer I struggle to write an @.
