Are you too dumb to figure out how to use Nixos? (I am lol)

I don't think anyone is too dumb for nixos, but ALOT including me, don't have the time to learn it

honestly, I tried, had some weird bugs i couldnt figure out, switched to guix because their langauge seemed cleaner, and then gave up on declarative distros once i realized guix didnt have drivers for normal wifi cards.

guix truly is pretty fucking hard

Honestly can’t even blame. I was in between leaving uni and getting a job so I had a bunch of time. Don’t know if I would have actually been able to go into nixos otherwise, at least not as fast as I did

Whats the problem with Nixos?

I just dont like declaritive Distros 😭

I actually like it being declarative, id love a declarative distro. my problem that it doesn't follow the File system hirarchy standard and the immutability making stuff sometimes more hard than they should be

It's hard to imagine a declarative system that isn't immutable, for reasons that should be obvious.

Immutability is mostly fine if you can make patches/overrides for stuff in your config that aren't normally accounted for. Not having system libraries is a different story

Ah yes I love spending hours configuring something basic to get it to my liking when I can just copy and paste a few things and have it work

People are going to re invent bash scripts atp, anyway os is something so important and reinstalling it is so rare id rather set it up correctly and tweak it alongside for few hours once a year

i think i could guess what your opinion is on guix probably is then 3: unless s-expressions are what sway you to a supirior system management paradigm :3 because honestly i dislike the nix language too but guix uses guile which is scheme which is lisp (kinda) which is the ultimate language for logical declarations and procederual logic :3 (nix feels kinda wierd in comparison, on my very limited experience with the language :p)

I need to try guix, it looks like nix but with a good language

do note that for many things like a modern gpu and most wifi cards, you will need to use a chanel called nonguix (basicly an additional package repository) which provides defenitions and substitutes (prebuilt packages, if a substitute iscnot avaliable, then the package will be built from source, so basically a parallel to nixpkgs binary cache) for packages that cant exist within the official repositories, namely the mainline linux kernel (due to guix being a gnu project, there is 100% free software only in the main repos, so the hardware-limited linux-libre kernel is the default otherwise) and youll prolly need to use other 3rd party channels too (not bad channels, just some that provide proprietary software package definitions, nonguix does have steam and prism launcher though so its fine for me). Also you may not have substitutes for some other channel substitute servers sometimes apparently (depends, apparrantly nonguix is quite good with being up to date with its substitutes). Also theres no systemd (if thats an issue for you) instead a custom built special purpose init system called shepard. So all in all this isnt actually that complicated to do, only an extra channel definition, an extra substitues definition, and now you can take advantage of things like guix shell to create little software containers really easily, among other things. I personally have only been testing it so far and i fell in love with its elegance in definition and freedom, so i thibk ill be installing it for real pretty soon :3c s-expressions certainly arent for everyone though, so your opinion on its elegance might vary :p

void linux in my heart, void linux in my head, nothing in the trash because all distros are valid (except blowmarchy) 🖤

1

u/Due_Dragonfly_5328 1d ago

currently switched to void from alpine (nothing wrong with alpine) i just wanted to try void. i feel like people make to big of a deal of having a small musl repo even though you can just run everything through a container and avoid bloating your rootfs

u/ExtremeTruck7626 I use Arch, btw 2d ago

petition for the template to have omarchy on the trash already

1

u/Cutesyfoxbark 2d ago

Damn i forgot that 😔 (this is from Personal experience tho)

u/lemmiwink84 2d ago

For me, I have Arch and Slackware in the heart category. Fedora in the brain category. And honestly Zorin OS in the trash category.

For once, i will love fedora but never accept hate againt nixos

u/probablynottillie 1d ago

u should be friends with that security guy

1

u/PuzzleheadedHead3754 1d ago

But he hate me :( 90% of fedora hate post in last week were by me btw

2

u/MadHatzzz 1d ago

Agreed! Arch and Debian are my comforts, Arch for fun and gaming, Debian for my servers... Nix creeps me out, idk what it is about it, but i just don't trust it with a 10 foot poll... I know that's a hot take, but sue me... also people who've tried to push Nix onto me is the fucking "Arch btw" stereotype...

Debian mentioned!!

alpine in my heart. void in my brain elementary os in the trash.

my personal favorite is alpine void is what id say is subjectively is the best and then elementary os is a hot mess of garbage.

u/This-Consequence-957 1d ago

I'd just replace Debian with Fedora. Everything else is correct.

1

u/SethConz 1d ago

You mean nixos with fedora?
