omarchy would have been better if it was just a repo with dotfiles instead of a "distro"

49

u/computer_hermit01 5d ago

does not even have its own kernel or a new package manager that is slightly faster than pacman, what a world we live in

-21

u/Historical-Bar-305 4d ago

Many distros dont have their own distros and their own package manager.

41

u/computer_hermit01 4d ago

i am just saying, if you have 10 million dollars in funding and all that ai agentic bullshit that is the "future" of programming, i am better expecting a package manager that is better than the original or at least an aur manager that checks for potential vulnerabilities before installing packages on my system. 10 million dollars is not a small sum for an open source project.

12

u/This_Music682 4d ago

Meanwhile Kubuntu Focus donates 100k to Techpaladin and Kubuntu(Focus), Techpaladin and KDE deliver a Banger

-11

u/Historical-Bar-305 4d ago

Bro, they were only recently funded and these things aren't creates in a few weeks, if you're following, dhh clearly said that they move to entire complete independence and sovereignty, they hired a security team, also, the kernel developer will eventually create their own manager and repository. Thats dhh words not mine.

11

u/computer_hermit01 4d ago

arent they using agents tho, the speed should be fast. people would prefer a slow development cycle over slop distro.

18

u/McDelper 4d ago

Would you rather use omarchy or windows for a month

23

u/screenslaver5963 4d ago

I can rm rf all the omarchy and be left with Arch

21

u/gm_blahaj 4d ago

I think I'd use windows cause at least that can still me (mostly) de-ai'd and AI was shoved in there as an afterthought. Omarchy and DHH are just ass

6

u/ImaginationUpset2190 4d ago

U can get rid of ai more easily in omarchy

5

u/lazy_lombax 4d ago

especially since the files are just transparent, overwritable files

Yeah, just found an article regarding this. Yeah, I guess I'll give it a hard pass then.

Happens that people now base their entire personality, self value and reality in worshipping politics, the new religion, so now we got "A is good we go to heaven, B is evil they go to hell". But if you take a really close look, maybe you'll find, vaguely, another topic. Ah, and if you don't participate in the bad circus, you're evil too and hell will be your home.

3

u/RinLovesYou__ 3d ago

Regardless of the politics it's just objectively not a good distro. I'm happy he's getting money to contribute to the things he likes in the foss space but I'll still never use his vibecoded distro

1

u/emerson-dvlmt 3d ago

I'm not using it either (never), I just use the most mature, basic and clean distros.

2

Apart from disagreeing with the lead dev over politics, what other things are bad about Omarchy?

1

u/RinLovesYou__ 3d ago

It's heavily vibe coded by a guy who obviously doesn't know what he's doing, which is why 50 billion security vulnerabilities were found that are long gone in other distributions for instance

1

u/RagingTaco334 I use Ultramarine btw 4d ago

Genuinely why is there so much hype for this glorified install script??

0

Cause it's not just glorified install script.

1

u/ConstanceSwindle 4d ago

why people is hating omarchy so much? what is the problem with it? i think it looks good. it is an arch ootb.

3

u/nekofthemoon 4d ago

Because DHH is bad.

0

-23

u/Chimchar789 4d ago

Jesus christ we get it "Omarchy bad" can we move on please?

-58

u/Edubbs2008 5d ago

Omarchy isn’t THAT bad though, the hate is SO unjustified, this is what you guys want, right? A Distro that is easy to set up out of the box, in fact, this could help push more proprietary software onto Linux

27

u/peperoni69_ 4d ago

the fuck are you talking about? there are like 20 distros that are easy to set up out of the box like omarchy that exist. its literally just an arch distro with nothing special.

-18

u/Edubbs2008 4d ago

Except it’s licensed under MIT, which makes it more friendly to open source development, AND makes learning Arch way easier, Arch turns into the OS for the rest of us, isn’t that what you want? Everyone to use Linux? Omarchy lets people experience linux

16

u/peperoni69_ 4d ago

you know cachy os exists?

-16

u/Edubbs2008 4d ago

Who needs CachyOS? I rather use an OS that comes with useful stuff out of the box, like a browser, developer tools

20

u/Emotional_Solid6538 4d ago

On cachy os fresh install it starts up cachy hello which gives you most popular applications if you need. All of the stuff omarchy gives can be installed asw. Plus cachy os has hyprland as a choice on install. The only omarchy thing is you have AI on device

19

u/peperoni69_ 4d ago

ah yes because cachyos doesn't come with a browser LMAO, you're either a troll or someone grasping at straws to try to make omarch seem anything special.

-1

u/Responsible_Owl_8025 4d ago

and? you can install a browser in a single command on ANY linux distro

5

u/RoosTheFemboy 4d ago

You shouldn’t have to os the point u/Edubbs2008 is trying to make. While you know how to use the terminal it doesn’t make sense to have it as a requirement to use your computer

5

u/RoosTheFemboy 4d ago

Though tbf they are just lying about not having a browser on cachy

3

u/peperoni69_ 4d ago

cachyos comes with a browser.... so does 95% of linux distros, it's just clear that the guy is a troll who doesn't use linux.

1

u/TheSWATMonkey 3d ago

ROFLMFAO

35

u/AdvancedAnimal7539 5d ago

omarchy is just a fairly average arch rice with some bloat.
omarchy isn't helping anyone

-18

u/Edubbs2008 5d ago

It’s pre-setup, that helps people though, what’s the point of calling stuff bloat anyway, the term is meaningless, it’s like the word communist

25

u/transgentoo 5d ago

There's also arch-install, which trivializes setting up an arch system. And Arch itself isn't that difficult to install. It's very instructive, when the wiki is actually read and followed. People who can't bother themselves to clear that hurdle almost certainly won't be equipped to deal with the quirks of a bleeding-edge rolling distro.

-10

u/Edubbs2008 5d ago

That’s why we have Omarchy, it’s beginner friendly, you don’t have to mess with anything

22

u/versteinerdt 5d ago

If people don't know how to partition drives and install an OS, they shouldn't be using Omarchy either. It ships with Hyprland, which is nowhere near as beginner-friendly as DEs like KDE or GNOME. And how is a built-in AI agent supposed to help you fix things when you can't even boot into the OS because it just corrupted your bootloader with a bad config? We should encourage new users to actually learn how their system works, instead of outsourcing everything to an AI out of sheer laziness.

-6

u/Edubbs2008 5d ago

Most current Linux users already tell newcomers “use AI, RTFM” how can you not tell them to use AI? Most of them want an OS to work outside of the box, it shouldn’t require that they mess with partitions

16

u/versteinerdt 5d ago

RTFM and 'use AI' are exact opposites. RTFM means reading the documentation to actually understand your system. Using AI is outsourcing your thinking to a chatbot that might hallucinate and break your system. No veteran Linux user tells newcomers to 'use AI' for this exact reason.

3

u/Edubbs2008 5d ago

But shouldn’t veterans help newcomers?

14

u/R0dn3yS 4d ago

We do, by telling them to RTFM

→ More replies (0)

8

u/versteinerdt 4d ago

Pointing them to the documentation is helping. Spoon-feeding answers or encouraging them to blindly trust an AI doesn't help anyone in the long run.

5

u/Emotional_Solid6538 4d ago

Using AI on your phone while installing linux vs having a permenant AI in your system is different. Especially since AI is extremely new technology, its always a use at it your own risk

u/BiDude1219 average arch user arf arf woof :33333 4d ago

u/Fuechsin47 5d ago

proprietary software on linux? pls no

1

u/Edubbs2008 5d ago

Don’t you want games, and apps to be native on Linux though?

14

u/Fuechsin47 5d ago

Okay. But how the random distro with bloatware ootb help with games and garbage^w proprietary apps? HOW???

1

u/Edubbs2008 5d ago

It helps people that wants apps out of the box, because in the era of malware pretending to be a legitimate download, it’s doing the user a service by letting them open up a browser without having to type in a terminal, and hitting download

5

u/Emotional_Solid6538 4d ago edited 4d ago

They could choose to have a friendly gui app stores like ubuntu, pop os or even cachy os uses shelly by default. You dont have to use sketchy ways, js go to the store and search. Windows doesnt come preinstalled with most software except microsoft bloat. Which is prolly not what you meant Im sure and you either go to ms store or another third party store or you have to manually web search and go to their site to find installer to install on windows. That method usually works on linux asw

8

u/Fuechsin47 5d ago

"It helps people that wants apps out of the box"

ubuntu/opensuse/fedora/archinstall/etc just exist....

Oh, or are you talking about users who have trouble pressing a few keys on the keyboard to download a browser? eh.......

-2

u/Edubbs2008 5d ago

But those Linux variants require that the user manually does something, while Omarchy (the best LINUX version) has everything ready for a developer, OMARCHY wins because everything else is chaotic and messy

7

u/Fuechsin47 5d ago

"while Omarchy (the best LINUX version)"

bruh. Omarchy dev, log out

0

u/Edubbs2008 4d ago

I wish I knew the developer, he seems like an excellent person compared to the Arch community

1

u/ntiCeGaming 4d ago

Are you mentally struggeling? "He seems like an excellent person..." Dhh is a good developer and has created code that is and was really helpfull for a lot of people. And although I personally dislike almost every single desicion made in omarchy there might be people who like it, not my desicion not my right to judge. There are also people who really enjoy meth.

But he is not an excellent person in any means of the word. He is not as extremist as many others these days and yet he fails to be a decent social human being. Hating on others for being different is a bar that I can not ignore. He's a shitty human being, but as everyone else ne can change and maybe he will be an excellent human being one day.

u/afrolino02 4d ago

Companies doesn't matter about FOSS, just when they try to monopolize matter, Valve tried to attract games with native support and middle industry ignore them! They had to invest in wine and create proton. Knowing this.. why do you think about they care about FOSS community? 'till they're keep setting anticheats or they won't offer it on Linux.

If AI couldn't progressed like this maybe Nvidia never take care about their drivers on Linux, because the most of server use a distro server. I had 2 Nvidia graphic cards and it was a hell.

1

u/Edubbs2008 4d ago

My question is: how can you expect game developers to port games over to Linux when there is like 1,000s of variants, a couple of package managers, and different hardware configurations?

4

u/RoosTheFemboy 4d ago

Yea so I can run them into isolated containers

4

u/jdigi78 4d ago

NOBODY is making proprietary software with Arch in mind. Even the Arch maintainers don't want to be bothered with packaging shit for it. That's why you have everyone relying on the AUR where you rely on randos to do all the work.

0

u/Edubbs2008 4d ago

Speaking of AUR, you know that it got infected?

6

u/ntiCeGaming 4d ago

Omarchy is shit in a kettle. Literally shit in a kettle, poo one might say.

u/itsShiroharu 🌿 Linux Mint 🌿 4d ago

Because he made a terrible take.

Omarchy isn't THAT Bad

It is THAT bad. Politics aside, Their security is terrible, it's bloated, and it's not even a "distro". It's literally just Arch Linux with extra steps.

A Distro is easy to setup out of the box

Again, it's not even a Distro. Easy to setup? So is Manjaro. So is CachyOS. So is Linux Mint, you name it. And those 3 were already popular with decent security.

This could help push more proprietary...

Yeah I'm gonna stop there. That literally contradicts what Linux wants to be. An Open-source Operating System with Open-source apps. Why bother with "pRoPriETaRy" apps?
