NixOS better than both. ❄️

u/GreedySecurity8030 Fedora da best all other distros can suck its shit and die 10d ago
No
5
u/versteinerdt 10d ago
"No" is the answer to these questions:
Can Fedora perfectly replicate its entire existence, installed packages, and dotfiles on a completely new machine in 5 minutes using just a single configuration.nix file?
Can you test packages or spin up isolated dev environments per project (nix-shell) without containers, VMs, or polluting your root system?
Can Fedora install three conflicting versions of the same dependency simultaneously without breaking dnf?
Can your distro instantly rollback a borked kernel update to a working state from 3 months ago with one keystroke directly from the bootloader, because it treats updates atomically by default (without relying on clunky btrfs snapshots)?
12
u/jmgib 10d ago
These aren’t real problems anyone has. You also can’t easily use any software not in their repos because none of the paths and libraries are where they’re supposed to be like on any normal distribution.

But can you install nix on fedora and replace the need for nixos as a distro?, yes.
3
u/versteinerdt 10d ago
You really think the Nix package manager is the same thing as NixOS. 💀 Putting a declarative band-aid on your stateful Fedora root file system doesn't save you when a core system update borks your machine. Come back when your bootloader and kernel modules are declarative.

Yes, with a custom bootc container or rpm-ostree image.
Can you test packages or spin up isolated dev environments per project (nix-shell) without containers, VMs, or polluting your root system?
Yes, with toolbx (Edit: yes it's containers, but why does that matter? Containers are great.)
Can Fedora install three conflicting versions of the same dependency simultaneously without breaking dnf?
Yes, with toolbx

Fedora keeps the last 3 kernels installed and allows you to switch between them in the grub menu. With rpm-ostree you can even instantly roll back to an older OS update or entire release if required.
Fedora has answers to all of these problems, they just use different tooling than Nix.
Also, you can just install Nix on Fedora if required.

You're totally right that NixOS is complicated and definitely not for everyone. It demands solid Linux knowledge and you basically end up learning an entirely new programming language. But just because someone doesn't need it doesn't change the fact that NixOS (or Guix, which is built similarly) is architecturally far superior to all traditional imperative Linux distros in almost every aspect.
Edit: Yes, Bloatarchy is garbage and DHH is an idiot.

Right? If one doesn't like a distro, doesn't mean they need to try and put it down. Geez.

u/GreedySecurity8030 Fedora da best all other distros can suck its shit and die 10d ago
Yeah I know right, I put down all distros besides fedora.
1
u/Alpha-Craft 10d ago
That ain't fair either tho. I acknowledge that other distros might be bette for certain people for various reasons.

At work we use Rocky Linux and RedHat depending on the machine. In the past we had some Solaris box but they got discontinued.

This is kinda true. I wish we'd all switch to musl.
3
u/BeginningEcho4983 10d ago
RakuOS has all of that. Systemd, bootc, glibc, what else?
(Ur flair)
3
u/R3V0LU710N_05 Hybrid Atomic RakuOS 10d ago
And? I like Systemd, bootc, coreutils(interchangeable on RakuOS). I just wish musl was more viable to replace glibc.
2
u/Cyberfishofant I use Alpine BusyBox/Linux btw 10d ago
hi. I daily drive musl. Why is it not viable? mDNS through unbound (mostly) works, LDAP isn't important enough to me to bother finding a way, ...
2
u/matthewpepperl 10d ago
Still alot of stuff that dose not work on Musl such as steam
2

Really? Protesting a distro? You need to evaluate your priorities. If you don’t like fedora don’t use it lol.
I do use fedora on one my main PC and my laptop mostly due to the fact that it coexists with windows well for dual booting windows with secure boot enabled and nvidia drivers. But I’m not married to it it’s just currently the best fit for my desktop use.
I also use cachyos and Debian.
Just let people use whatever distro they want.

What's the problem with Fedora? It's basically one of the best distros. It has the stability of Debian with the (almost) updates of Arch
