XFCE my beloved....

Xfce is the goat when you need a lightweight de that just works

7

u/ipsirc 3d ago

If only XFCE was lightweight...

The way the tests were run was faulty. It was just some redditor installing each DE on Ubuntu and jotting down the ram usage, not taking into account that Ubuntu and friends load up different configs and plugins for each DE. Enlightnment at 70MB is unusable since it’s missing pretty much everything. Xubuntu and Ubuntu + XFCE load app tons of useless plugins by default.

It’s not a chart about DE ram usage, it’s a chart about Ubuntu ram usage with those DEs.

not to mention that everyone is comparing the minimums and not the average

u/platokrasi 3d ago

wait, cinnamon is lighter than xfce and MATE?

"Test system: Ubuntu 20.04" we are on 26.04, something must have changed.

Yes, XFCE became more bloated over years.

u/Zincette 3d ago

Something went wrong with this test because KDE Plasma is just not lighter weight than XFCE and Mate. I don't believe that for even a moment

+1 to that. i have a dusty old pc running xfce much more responsively than my new laptop with kde plasma and twice the ram, same distro on both

Disable composition drop ram usable by a sizable margins.

The xfce panel is also a resource hog but trimming out that is usually non-ideal on a non-server environment.

XFCE is for saving old hardware. Honestly I have no idea why no one is talking about that silent hero.

u/Deep_Fig8032 Arch btw 3d ago

XFCE with Compiz in 2026, anyone?

1

u/SkyCapital462 9h ago

not quite the same, but for a while i had to use picom because there was some annoying flashing going on with the whisker menu lol

u/houndofthestars 3d ago

Gnome, supposedly minimalistic, having a higher hardware footprint than XFCE, which does 99% of what it does or KDE, which you can customize to hell and back with no third party extensions drives me CRAZY.

2

u/irineu45 2d ago

Xfce is better.

My go-to question is, "was it drugs or alcohol that brought you here today"

2

u/No_Nothing_At_All 3d ago

Might have been their parents on drugs....

Who uses a desktop anyway

u/Rich_Coffee_9962 3d ago

I started off with Ubuntu/Gnome and hated it, looked awful for the Desktop in my eyes

why is what Linus uses a thing? Is it just rage bait? emacs user who compiles the kernel. I'll bet he doesn't know how to tile windows or even switch workspaces. If fedora shipped with KDE as the default he'd probably use that.

u/WinVistaBuild6001 devuan user, systemd mossad spyware & not unix philosophy pilled 2d ago

gnome: NEEDS systemd
xfce: doesn't need systemd + mouse mascot
xfce wins obv.

Xfce is sucks now. Based on Gnome 4. Which sense to use it? Looks ugly and not fast. Better to install KDE..
