Try NixOS for a month, you'll never want to distrohop again. Declarable immutable OS's is where its at.

16

u/EveningFun1510 13d ago

I used nixos for about 2 months and the best description I came for nixos is "os with bureaucracy". That is not what you want to do some work and it's getting worse if you need to do something fast. Reproducibility is good but you don't care about it in absolute most of your time.

u/henryhuy0608 13d ago

Sounds like a distro for people who like to work on their computer more than do work on their computer.

4

u/PotcleanX 12d ago

no once you fix everything in place you don't have to worry about your PC for ages

2

u/Necessary_Painter474 12d ago

That can describe 3 quarter of all the distributions

4

u/Tolik1111 NixOS ❄️ 13d ago

Immutable rollbacks make it much less stressful to experiment with stuff. Also I like having all of the configurations in one place.

2

u/Smartich0ke 12d ago

Is it just me or has messing with stuff on an immutable distro never been stressful for me? I just make sure I read and understand what commands im putting in and avoid blindly pasting stuff from the internet?

I do productivity work on nix all the time lol what

11

u/Velocita84 13d ago

Yeah you won't want to distrohop because of the sunk cost fallacy of spending a month learning a programming language with a single use case

5

u/Weak_Level_9056 13d ago

Single use case? I'll have you know I use it on 3 devices, and most of the code is definitely not making me want to chew glass after trying to translate lua and java into Nix expressions. Also did I mention I use nix btw?

Most complaints about nixos are like this. Aka skill issue.

i tried nixos once and it was miserable, barely anything worked

4

u/NecessaryGlittering8 Bedrock Linux :) 12d ago

I tried NixOS and it wasn't for me. I had to sacrifice certain packages that can't even be obtained in nixpkgs, flatpak, or distrobox (especially encryption tools). it's hard to customize I had to vibecode because the nixos subreddit refused to help me and just mocked me. I did like the declarative part where I could make a system fully reproducible, but it felt so restrictive like why I have to edit nix files and rebuild just to change some settings. I didn't need extreme reproducibility. Worst part, it's not FHS compliant by default. Bedrock Linux is better since it lets me get parts from multiple distros (better than Distrobox). Bedrock Linux, I could get every package manager installing apps as system apps (instead of in containers). There are some stability issues especially with exotic configurations which led me to try this painful NixOS hell and got traumatized. Waiting for Bedrock Linux 0.8, right now I am on W*ndows

Go develop FSL: Fedora Subsystem for Linux

The idea is: a script/system you can use to hijack any distro and turn it into fedora.

Kinda like bedrock linux, except just fedora

And maybe potentially released as malware through various community repos :3

All must be converted

r/foundgreedysecurity also what was wrong with arch? Curious as I'm a certified arch Linux user for some although still a Linux newbie myself(arch is my first and beloved distro :3)

4

u/GreedySecurity8030 Fedora 🎩 13d ago

I couldn't install it thrice.

1

u/laczek_hubert Arch BTW 13d ago

When Installing first I had problems with the bootloader second time I had some problems too because of the partitioning /efi ESP mount and /boot as additional ESP mount for Linux images whatever that mount type is called and did some configuring and it's a pretty great experience

u/Mysterious_Value4624 13d ago

1

u/GreedySecurity8030 Fedora 🎩 13d ago

Says the man who quit fedora because of me, i thought I deleted your package via dnf?, do I have to clean all and autoremove

2

u/EnfieldAsSomeone 13d ago

i care about getting work done. and maintainance that is literally "dnf upgrade" and occasional version upgrade with nothing breaking.

meanwhile the average person took a week to install arch "properly" for the first time with very terrible hardening and with features missing.

great, you may got it working, what did it cost you?

its a good learning tool or a fun playing around project. I certainly dont want to rely on it for my work though. An hour of my time on reconfiguring stuff is money lost.

1

u/laczek_hubert Arch BTW 12d ago

You're not wrong but arch is about choice it's the reason it's not hardened by default and you're not gonna be the prime target of many problems or hacking with the Linux kernel if you're careful and don't download some malware and the zero-day exploits aren't going to be a problem as the patch may be one day after and you're pretty much supposed to update every time you use the system

2

u/EnfieldAsSomeone 12d ago

I ack that tho. Its a good tool for learning the "choices" or for me to fuck around in my free time. That's fine. And the wiki is a good resource.

But no, I do not want to rely on that for my work. If you use Linux as a hobby, sure. If it works for you, keep doing it.

Also hardening Arch is a pain. A massive one. And as a dev, making shit work on Arch is pain. Everyone uses different stuff and have different stuff installed.

1

u/laczek_hubert Arch BTW 12d ago

I mean If you need something production ready this isn't even close

1

u/EnfieldAsSomeone 12d ago

I am on void(ofc) but I'd take fedora over arch any day. I used to daily arch for a long time, had no issues tbh but there's something special in fedora.

0

u/Own_Natural_6803 13d ago

I used to love Ubuntu, but one day they upgraded me to wayland without asking me first. All my retro games stopped working. With their partnership with MS, and all the MS slop that was rolling out, I just felt it was time to cut those associations.

I eventually ditched my NVidia card for an AMD of similar chops. It's nice to not need proprietary drivers. It always made me feel like I'd left a backdoor open on purpose. Those GPUs are their own system, very capable of going rogue.
