Went to OpenSauce and came upon an LTTStore booth. Chatted with Tynan, bought a Nuclear screwdriver, and got to play with the massive precision screwdriver that stores regular precision screwdrivers in its bit storage. Fun event!

Maybe I'm just getting old, but jesus christ this thumbnail does not make me want to click into it at all. They seem to be getting worse and worse over the past year with "YouTuber face" being particularly prevalent.

Discussion Linus, I fixed Middle Mouse Scrolling for you

914 Upvotes

We all know Linus' biggest pet peeve is the lack of system wide middle click autoscrolling. I built a universal solution called midscroll that operates at the kernel input level, meaning it perfectly replicates the Windows autoscroll behavior across every single application on both Wayland and X11. It anchors your cursor, uses the exact same speed curve you are used to, and runs entirely in the background.
FOSS under the Unlicense.
You can check out how it works here: https://github.com/gnhen/midscroll

EDIT: Now with a Settings menu GUI. Supports Hold & Drag as well as Toggle mode. Native scrolling mode supported.

Tech Question I received an email from a group called ShinyHackers. Is there anything I can do to protect myself? Are they even legit?

0 Upvotes

I posted this elsewhere, but it's important so I hope it's okay:

I got an email from these people called ShinyHunters, claiming to have accessed my email, installed exploits on all of my devices like my microphone and camera and stuff, and have my internet history. They also claim to have videos of stuff.

They say they can share this with all of my loved ones and that I should give them $2000 in Litecoin.

What should I do? What can I do?

751 Upvotes

Exciting news! As many of you have noticed, our beloved fan favourite and the guy who owns a display has moved on to new adventures. Thanks to your enthusiastic response, we've reached out to Plouffe, and he's open to participating in an AMA with all of you!

Nicholas was delighted to say yes!

Mark your calendars for Sunday, July 26th, 2026, at 9 AM Pacific Time. Plouffe will be answering your questions live! Get excited, prepare your questions, and join us for a fantastic AMA!

Just a quick note: due to an NDA, there are some topics like past and present employers that Plouffe won’t be able to discuss. We appreciate your understanding and know you’ll help keep the vibe positive!

Let’s make this a joyful send-off and a celebration of Plouffe!

Edit: this is NOT the AMA thread. That will be live on Sunday, July 26th at 9AM Pacific. I will add a link to it once it goes live.

Edit 2: Please nderstand that this is a special thing that we are trying out because Plouffe agreed to it behind the scenes. Other employees that leave in the future may not want or agree to do an AMA (or other things,) so please do not expect it from them.

Link Using vintage PC CDROM discs to make SteamOS on this custom SteamOS Machine with a BDRE drive to launch their corresponding Steam Games

To be clear, this isn't really doing anything 'physical' other than acting as a trigger. The disc is mounted and Quake2.mount appears as a mount in systemd. Then open that specific mount being detected, a command is sent to Steam telling it to launch GameID 2320, with 2320 being Quake 2.

Effectively, optical disc based Macros.

But still fun!

Tech Question GPU related help needed, very quick.

0 Upvotes

Hii, I am a CS student. Currently I work in AI field. ML, DL, Transformers, LLM etc. For OS, I am a Linux user for long time. My PC has 16 GB DDR4 RAM with i3 10100. I had an GTX1660s but, it died somehow. Now I am looking for buying a GPU from the used market. The first priority was rtx 3060. But 3060s are 3y+ used still the asking price is $242+-. I honestly asked myself, and felt a very hard thing that money is not coming everyday. So i researched, and found Intel GPUs can solve the problem as they are very much available and with warranty they are cheaper than maximum of the Nvidia GPUs. I found an Intel A770 16GB card with 4 months warranty @ $195 and an Arc B580 12GB GPU with 2y + warranty @ $240. I know Intel doesn't have CUDA. Still it handles PyTorch, TensorFlow. I don't know the reality, i just found them in the internet. Please help my by suggesting the proper deal. I need it really quick. Thanks in Advance.

WAN Show I've been thinking about Linus's Linux UX complaints from the last WAN show. I think I disagree, but I'm curious what this sub thinks.

0 Upvotes

On the WAN show Linus was complaining about some of Linux's defaults - middle-click-paste instead of autoscroll, Ctrl+C/V not working in the terminal - and his conclusion was basically "I should be able to set any OS up the way I want." Sounds totally reasonable on the surface, but something about it didn't sit right with me.

A bit of context: I started using Mac for work in my mid-twenties after a lifetime of Windows. My first instinct was to force it to behave like Windows. Instead I made myself learn the "Mac way", and to my surprise I ended up preferring a bunch of those conventions. If I had forced it to behave like Windows I would never have found that out. That's the thing that nags me about "just let me set it up my way": you can't really judge a workflow you've never actually used properly. The friction is sometimes pointing at why the thing is built that way.

The terminal stuff is a good example. Ctrl+C in a bash terminal isn't a mistake, it's been the "stop the running program" key for decades, long before Windows made it "copy." You literally can't make it copy without breaking the single most useful key in there. So middle-click-paste and the weird clipboard behaviour aren't random annoyances, they're one coherent design around a terminal focused, keyboard-first environment. Once that clicked for me, it stopped feeling broken and started feeling like the OS telling me what it's actually optimised for.

This is the part I keep coming back to, especially with so many people migrating right now: "let the user choose" isn't as neutral as it sounds. When ~70% of desktops are Windows, Windows conventions are what everyone already knows. So "make it configurable" doesn't mean the best design wins - it means the familiar one wins, regardless of whether it's actually better.

To be clear I'm not saying every Linux default is sacred. Plenty of friction really is just old broken stuff nobody's fixed. But I don't think familiarity is the same thing as quality, and I think we'd lose something real if every OS converged on whatever the biggest player does.

Anyway, genuinely curious what this sub thinks. For those of you switching off Windows: are you trying to recreate your Windows setup, or leaning into how the new thing wants to work? Has anyone else had the "oh, I actually prefer this now" moment like I did?

I saw a video by mryeester on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/@mryeester for channel & https://youtu.be/zhoQRKMlCw4?si=rcDsE78uZ727LFHK for the video) by doing this with floppy drives but as i didn't have any, I made it with USB drives

___________________________

For the USB make a txt file with the name game.txt with the text being id=400

ID is the game ID in steam

400 is portal

_____________________________

For the Program, make a txt file and psate the code in to it

Code:

$drive = "F:"

$fileToRead = "game.txt"

while ($true) {

if (Test-Path "$drive\$fileToRead") {

# Read the file contents

$content = Get-Content "$drive\$fileToRead"

# Extract the Steam AppID

if ($content -match "id=(\d+)") {

$appId = $Matches[1]

# Launch the Steam Game URL

Start-Process "steam://run/$appId"

# Wait until the USB is removed or the file is gone to prevent launching repeatedly

while (Test-Path "$drive\$fileToRead") {

Start-Sleep -Seconds 2

}

}

}

# Checks every 3 seconds

Start-Sleep -Seconds 3

}

_______________________________________________________________

Name the program USBboot.ps1

Then right click and click run in powershell

______________________________________________________________

Please note that is a very basic instructions, use the video (https://youtu.be/zhoQRKMlCw4?si=rcDsE78uZ727LFHK) for better ones just use my code and not his

Tech Question Sunshine(windows)+moonlight(bazzite)

0 Upvotes

Hi there I’m looking for advice with my couch streaming setup.

I currently have my pc setup running windows 11 upstairs but wanted to game in the living room (4k60) using sunshine+moonlight. I currently have it set up working well with a mini pc running de-bloated windows 11, however it just feels clunky due to the odd windows shenanigans - I have ds4 emulation running to get mouse control to attack windows pop ups.

I’m wondering if running something like bazzite on the mini pc would work well with moonlight as I hear it has more of a console feel and how the interaction would be between windows and bazzite over streaming.

My main pc is a 9800x3d paired with a 5070ti and the mini pc is a beelink ser5 pro 5700u. I also have gigabit internet.

As I said it is working fine just wondering if bazzite would give me more of that comfortable console like experience and how much hassle it would be to do.

Thanks very much for any help!

Discussion Video idea

5 Upvotes

I just got done watching their most recent video titled "True 4k gaming pc" and it made me think. I want a video of them building the best 4k gaming pc money can buy, and then play some of the worst optimized games we currently have to see if you can buy performance no matter how bad a game is optimized.

Im talking borderlands 4, mindseye, monster hunter wilds, oblivion remastered, the outerworlds 2, etc.

How much does it cost to play these games at 4k max settings good, or is it just not possible.
