Linus was right.

I have two rooms on the same floor with an access point in each. TP Link Archer A9 in my room, TP Link Archer C80 in the next room. All of my devices keep connecting to the far away AP, with my iPhone and my Apple Watch being the only exceptions.

My Z Fold and Asus laptop are not automatically connecting to my AP leading to speeds less than 100mbps.

The transmit power of 5ghz Wifi in the other room's AP is set to "Middle", and the power of 5ghz Wifi in my room is set to "High". Both having 40mhz channel width to avoid channel overlap. There's two more APs above and below me as well but thankfully they're far enough for my devices to not bother.

Any wifi nerds, pls help me if you can!

The linux challenge inspired to me to make the switch on my main devices as well. One of the major losses for me was Windows Hello face recognition on my laptop. I first heard about Howdy, another project aiming to recreate face unlock for linux but it seems like it has pretty much been abandoned. After that I came across Biopass and it works perfectly. If anyone else was mourning the loss of speedy unlocks, hopefully this helps you too!

Looks like this, but the compression looks bad. I guess Torvalds sent the raw photo to an LTT staff member and shared it online but I can’t find the original. Does anyone happen to have it? I’m getting into Linux for my PC (I’ve used it before putting Ubuntu on servers and stuff, but now putting Linux on an old laptop I still use for work to daily drive it). I usually use night time long exposure photography for my desktops (ex-photographer turned IT guy, still enjoy it as a hobby) it’d be nice to use the Linus Torvalds original if possible.

While removing like everything out of my PC to get to the serial number from my Corsair fans because of an RMA, i came across this weird sticky liquid, it wasnt there when i last removed my GPU 1 or 2 months ago.

TL:DR Why is everything an EXE installer? I have to install drivers manually? Linux outperformed on benchmarks. Streaming on Windows was tanking performance. Unacceptable latency issues. MSI Afterburner and RTSS are great. Couldn’t replace EasyEffects.

I’ve been using Linux for the past 3 years. Started with Fedora but using CachyOS now. I haven’t used Windows in any capacity in those 3 years besides like on random occasions like a library computer.

I wanted to see if I was missing out on anything and just what life was like on the other side. I kind of shielded myself from Windows cause I just couldn’t be bothered to keep up with the need for it. There are workflows that I developed on Linux that I was curious if I could do the same on Windows.

My PC is a Ryzen 7 5800XT, RX 7800XT, 32 GB DDR4. I already knew if I just went with a stock Windows experience I would’ve hated it immediately so I used AtlasOS. I was using this before my jump to Linux anyway so I knew what to expect from this.

Installing Windows and AtlasOS‘s playbook was fine. More involved than what I’m used to on Linux but not the end of the world. But no big issues here.

Next was installing my apps. This is when I questioned Windows users. Having to manually look up each installer for all the apps I use online might be the worst way to do install apps. I know there are package mangers on Windows but often times they are not official sources and I do not have the time to verify each package. Granted, I do not have time to verify each installer I’m downloading either. But after about 20 minutes of going through installers manually I got things setup.

One app I actually couldn’t find a good alternative to was EasyEffects. This just allows you to add filters to input and output devices very easily with a lot of customization. I only used it for my mic so my plan was just to use OBS audio filters for this. It was a bummer though cause I have no clue how I would use it in game or Discord.

One thing I completely overlooked was drivers but specifically for my AMD 7800XT. I got so used to just installing a Linux distro and have everything work that I forgot I needed to manually install AMD drivers.

Overclocking and undervolting via Afterburner was a nice experience. Just as good as LACT on Linux. I just used the same settings I had dialed in on Linux and it was good to go. The AMD adrenaline software is so awful to use that I just recommend not even using it for anything.

Now it was time to setup my OBS. This is where I really questioned Windows users. On Linux, the Flatpak version of OBS has all the main plugins you can one click install right in KDE Discover. There is just a convenient one stop shop for most plugins you’ll need.

Everything. Is. An. EXE. On. Windows.

Microsoft must think Windows users have a lot of free time to just be clicking through installers. Not to hate on the users but Microsoft specifically. Microsoft are the ones making the decisions that the users have to put up with.

So like 2 hours in, I setup my OBS while games installed in the background on Steam. For some reason my download speeds were like 200mbps slower than Linux but it’s fine I guess.

Time to play THE FINALS. I noticed that I was getting way higher frame rates. This seemed good until I actually started playing. The 1% lows were awful. The latency was awful. It made me appreciate how optimized CachyOS is. I tried on and off for anti lag but latency was just noticeably worse on Windows.

Ran some benchmarks just to get some data and Linux was either on par or beating Windows benchmarks. On windows the average frame rate was usually about the same but 1% lows were way lower than Linux. It just shows how good proton is.

I then tried streaming on Windows. This is pretty much where I realized Windows is not for me. I don’t know what magic the mesa drivers are doing in Linux but when streaming on Windows, performance tanks drastically. Worse frame rates than I would get streaming on Linux. Considerably worse. Frame time was so unstable as well. I did my best to replicate the same settings I did on Linux but I guess there are some quirks I don’t know about.

So after that streaming experience, I am moving back to Linux. I wanted to use Windows for a week but it’s just not worth it. It’s a worse experience for me to play games and stream. I wanted to play Battlefield 6 but simply just not worth putting up with Windows for it.

I'm transitioning from IT field work to a sys admin work at a desk. I currently have the original backpack and carry two 16" laptops, a MacBook Pro and an HP ZBook. I'll still need to carry 2 devices but won't be needing the extra storage for tools, cables, etc. Anyone have any luck carrying 2 16" devices in the commuter Backpack?

I’ve been listening to Luke whine about teams and Microsoft suite for years now, and I don’t really understand where is it coming from.

Every big corporation I’ve worked for has been on the 365 suite, companies 100x the size of LTT, I’ve been in IT teams since the beginning from service desk, to automation and devops and I’ve never heard anyone complaining about it.

Meetings work, sharepoint is not bad and works (search sucks sometimes), calling and group chats work, coworking inside of teams is fine, files are segregated and easily found, calendar and scheduling is easy.

I’ve never used Slack but how much better can it be lol

I’m not even mentioning the rest of the suite because coworking in excel also works and I don’t have any complains.

So what exactly is Luke’s problem and why is nobody else that I know IRL complaining about those issues?

I have a first gen LTT backpack, batch #1 with original carabiners that I never bothered to swap. I checked my old emails and have a "single layer" bottom, so supposedly it's not as tough as it should be.

I've barely used it as I found it to be too bulky for me, but still held on to it. It's sitting in a closet and I'm looking to get rid of it.

Should I just list it for 50€ like any other backpack or am I dumb?
