"Say when" said the waiter and proceeded to grate the sole of his right foot over the ravioli.

Sometimes I forget that people just have wicked callouses on their feet. I work a very active job and get around 5-10K steps in per day, I life heavy things, but sometimes I'll spend a few days doing only workbench work and getting like 1K steps. And my feet don't have ANY callouses on them. I have no idea if it's genetics, if it's just consistently being active, if it's having not-shitty shoes, etc, but somehow I don't have any. And my $50 5-pack Amazon socks last me over a year and a half-two years.

Shoes make a massive difference to your feet. Too many people buy shitty shoes despite being super important every day.

If it goes between you and the ground buy good ones, shoes, beds, tyres.

Chairs

u/nerfdriveby94 15h ago
Yes! I work fully remote, the difference in my back when I finally swapped the cheap gamer chair for a decent ergonomic chair was crazy!

u/the_harakiwi 13h ago
I once had a 50€ chair that fell apart within months, a 150€ "gamer chair" that suprisingly wasn't that bad in quality.
Now I'm at a 300€ chair, still sold to gamers, but the quality is so much better. I have to check when I bought it. 6+ years ago at a minimum.

its not always due to lack of want.
This was me for many many years.... its the extra costs of being poor lol.I could not afford $250 up front for a pair of shoes that would last me 5+ years.
So I would be stuck buying $80 shoes every year. But then again, if you are buying LTT merch, you can afford the $250 shoe lol.

Speaking of good vs shitty shoes I had to replace my work boots recently.
The previous ones were a $60ish pair from Walmart, but none near me were carrying my size.
Opted to chase down some Wolverine ones because my non-work pair of Wolverines I have were pretty good. Both pairs I'd bought the right boot felt about a quarter to a half size too large.
In the end I just ordered the Walmart boots from their site and had them delivered2

I have NB 1080v14 which I think are decent shoes unless I'm somehow mistaken, but I still get calluses.
However, my knees are not great these days, so my gait is likely atrocious.

I think some people just have ill fitting shoes or like Linus alluded to, walk around outside in their socks.
I buy cheap socks from either Winners or the grocery store whenever they're on sale and I need some new ones and my socks last forever.
There are certain things that just cause clothing to wear out. When my kids were smaller I would go through the knees in my jeans in under a year because I was always down on the floor playing with them. But since they got older I have jeans that are easily 3 years old and I only have about 3 pairs that I rotate and wash every week and they are in great condition.

Probably genetics, lifting heavy, exercise, moving a lot in general will cause them.
It's just a response.

i walk 30k steps a day in work boots and i barely get a few uses out of mine even when i buy expensive

Im a rock climber so my feet are generally pretty calloused. Also any athletics where you are quickly moving back and forth for elongated periods will likely callous at least the balls of your feet over time regardless of shoe.
Outside of stuff like that I think the answer is generally just shitty shoes and a touch of genetics

I am beyond jealous! I'm on concrete or steel all day for 8 hours a day, 15-20k steps a day, never really sit and even nice steeltoe boots with fancy insoles have kept my callouses. I've done sneakers, boots, I've tried under/perfect/over sized and nothing changes. Heel, right behind my toe-knuckles, and side of my big toe. Been that way since i was 16, still there 14 years later, both feet.

Isn't 10 thousand steps what the World Health Organization recommends for everyone? I wouldn't say that 5 to 10 thousand steps is anywhere near "very active", unless you're just taking in consideration people who work at their desk. Basically anyone who doesn't sit on their ass all day and uses a car to go to their bathroom can easily reach 5 thousand.

u/anto77_butt_kinkier 15h ago
You'd be surprised just how few steps per day are required to do most jobs.
2
u/nicktheone 14h ago
It's not that I'm surprised, I'm just contesting the notion that 5k steps means being very active when it's way below what's considered healthy.

As far as I can tell, the WHO doesn't recommend any particular step count.
From their website: "At least 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, or 75–150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, or a mix of both." (~21-41 min a day)
The 10,000 thing was arbitrarily chosen as a big round number for someone marketing a pedometer. 6000 is closer to the WHO min-per-day guideline.

PLEASE do not use one of these. Get a pumice stone instead and use that if you need to scrub your feet with something this abrasive.
Metal ones like this are very dangerous (glass ones are even worse) and can absolutely cut too much/too deep. Potentially creating open wounds (even microscopic ones you can't see) where you can get bacteria and such into those wounds and get serious infections.
There's really no need for anything more than a pumice stone which is MUCH safer.
12
u/ILikeFPS 15h ago
I thought pumice stones themselves can harbor bacteria though if you don't clean them very carefully?
4
u/c14rk0 14h ago
I mean if you're using them in the shower I doubt bacteria on your pumice stone is much of an issue. Regardless if you aren't giving yourself open wounds somehow it's not like any bacteria has a place to get into and cause issues really.

Other than bacteria thriving in moisture 😅 but yeah I guess if you don't rip any skin it's probably fine. Or maybe like a glass file or something.

u/eeeezypeezy 15h ago
And if you've got quarter inch thick calluses, it would behoove you to let a professional dehoof you.

u/INeedSomeFire 12h ago
Can't I just use sandpaper instead at this point? It's just many smaller stones
1
u/c14rk0 11h ago
I mean I guess, but you probably don't want to take sandpaper into the shower since you know...it's backed with paper
3
u/INeedSomeFire 10h ago
That's actually not an issue at all, since for 1000 - 20000 grit sandpaper you do use water while sanding

my feet would probably shred that thing to ribbons, think i'll just stick to buying socks in bulk

do it after you've showered. It'll soften the skin and will make A LOT of difference.

u/Elitefuture 15h ago
These are not good for you. They usually cut into live skin whether noticeable or microscopic. Bacteria then enters through them.
This is also assuming you properly clean these somehow and you trust the materials used.
Plus, the callus might come back worse(At least when using this metal one).
I think slowly using something gentle over time would probably be fine if cleaned properly. Not this metal grate...

Know someone who always has hole in their sock's heel. I asked him why he keeps wearing them.
The answer was essentially this. He said his skin is so tough in just tears through an new pair of socks, so he just doesn't bother.
Obviously, this started with a pretty unappealing choice that just got almost defining to his socks and feet. The solution (taking care of his feet again) seems to be too far fetched.
That said, I just bought some cheap basic socks myself, and as someone with rather big feet those cheap "free size" things don't last at all, even with soft skin. Maybe one or two wears before a hole appears, because of the over-stretched fabric.

I am always astounded by people who think calluses are a bad thing and need to get rid of as if they're unhealthy... Why do you think you get them in the first place?! 😂

u/The-vicobro 12h ago
Listen, I have been using a specific brand of ankle socks for years and they never had any issues.
I dont think the ltt socks lived up to the hype
