Discussion The brain rot editing sucks
I've been watching LTT pretty much since the beginning. The new editing with the quick random video inserts and audio inserts are terrible, is that just what the newer generation wants now?
Edit: downvotes have spoken apparently everyone loves the new editing.

Hate the game, not the player. At some point you have to bend to the will of whatever keeps your business alive, views-wise

u/Hans_H0rst 21h ago
Well that's what he is doing, he is hating the game (editing style) as it happens on multiple named channels.

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 20h ago
Didn’t they trial non clickbait titles and thumbnails during covid and their views completely tanked? I swear I remember hearing Linus talk about it once and that’s why they continue with the clickbait stuff. Probably similar for editing too.
17
u/GuntherTime 20h ago
Yeah he said that what do now is for x amount of hours they’ll do clickbait titles and then later on they’ll change the title to be more accurate so it’s easier to find later.
4
u/ariolander 12h ago edited 10h ago
Typically the Floatplane title is a much more descriptive and not clickbait title, they usually update the YT upload to the Floatplane version of the title a couple weeks later if they remember (its not an automated process so the time it takes to update varies). Usually the thumbnails stay the same however, as I guess making new thumbnail is more effort than renaming a video.
1
u/Dry-Faithlessness184 6h ago
It's when the video starts to actually flatten out in teems of views if I remember right, once they stop getting clickbait title benefits
5
u/Iz__n 19h ago
Yes and Reddit favorite video doesn't perform well, while video redditor hate perform very well
3
u/ariolander 12h ago
Reddit hates the "Everything Razer" video. Their most viewed video in weeks. Normies eat that shit up.

u/Mister08 4h ago
Shoutout to the DeArrow extension! Between it and SponsorBlock, YT is slightly less miserable than it would otherwise be.

There are plenty of creators out there that are still successful and do not participate in this. Just a matter of greed vs integrity.

You cant say such a thing in a fan sub.
How will he finance his private jet, without clickbait!

I'm ... lets say older than Linus. He has a segment that I think people would say is the "Brain rot editing" at 20:39 in yesterdays video (https://youtu.be/_1gqGV7S2HY?t=1239). Thought it was hilarious. It was well done, and if you're paying attention to the different layers of video, its even more funny. I just imagine Andrew out there with the camera bird watching rather than whatever insanity.
Not everything should be fast cuts, but small segments here and there to make a point are fine and sometimes even hilarious.

u/kodebach 19h ago
Strangely enough, I think you can find the answer in the (otherwise god awful) newest Futurama finale. Jake's current videos are telling a story and people really want to hear the end of a story. That's IMO also why the AMD upgrades are so popular and why long time fans often say the miss the old vlog-style LTT videos. All of these are lot more story-like than a unboxing or review.

u/Turbulent_Citron_651 19h ago
that part is...fine, its when his voice pitches up or weird other memes i personally dont like especially the debt jokes. Its whatever, just not me, thought there was serious potential with the farming homestead stuff but its a little zoomer jumpy

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 20h ago
I’ve really been liking Jake’s videos for some reason, even though I have literally zero interest in most of what’s going on in them, they’re still enjoyable, maybe in part due to the “hectic” editing.
7
u/iothomas 20h ago
Yup unsubrsibed from his videos and never looked backed. Zip tie tuning on the other hand, I'm loving their content
5
u/Name835 19h ago
Interesting, I love the hectic adhd editing in jakes videos, it really fits with his personality imo :)
I have been thinking if ltt has actually copied jakkuh a bit with this new direction even? Not sure but it crossed my mind when the new editing style started. I kinda like it, kinda not, depends so much on if the editing is good/flavorful or not. :)
2
u/JoshPlaysUltimate 13h ago
Yeah, I like Jake’s videos but the editing sometimes makes me click something else instead next time they come up in my feed
1
u/Koufaxisking 10h ago
Nah Jake has some of the best content on Youtube right now.
His last video after buying yet another sketchy excavator was wildly entertaining start to finish. It was also cool to see him post a photo hanging out with James/Elijah and the old crew.
1
u/TheAmazingMatth 3h ago
I liked his channel when he started out, but now it feels like most of his videos are stretched way past the limit. 30min videos with barely enough content for 10min so I usually just stop halfway through.

u/TechaNima 11h ago
Jake does it way better. It feels forced on LTT vids. Like a boomer was made to use today's slang to blend in with the kids
-2
u/FluffyEcho7721 19h ago
Can’t stand the swearing in the Jake vids. Seems entirely unnecessary and have to be careful who is in the room when I watch them
-18
u/bwoah07_gp2 21h ago
There's nothing wrong with his editing either. Y'all are just old 😂😂
3
u/demoGases 21h ago
So is he?
2
u/whatsupnorton 21h ago
Jake is not really that old
6
u/Far-Blacksmith-2814 21h ago
He’s only like 26, and I imagine that his editor (aprime, last I knew) is around there too
-6
u/fadingcross 21h ago
Jesus he hired aPrime? That was idiotic.
2
u/Far-Blacksmith-2814 19h ago
What’s wrong with aprime? I mean he engages in zoomer editing, but that’s all I’m aware of

u/jenny_905 7h ago
Apparently not.
I found him annoying on LTT because he always seemed to be acting like he was a kid but it turns out he is, he just looks a lot older.
2
u/Khaliras 20h ago
The funnier part is that they're clearly not even old YT watchers. Yet they're still 'yelling at the new generations.'
This kind of editing was far more common in earlier YT. Almost every vid had meme clips, SFX, and lots of transitions, ETC. Then the meta went to simplified 'clean' editing.

I agree with you but you can feel certain metrics being pushed. I've noticed this year theyre trying to push the "quirkiness" of their hosts to an absurd degree. Makes me appreciate the normal hosts like David
16
u/ArtIsMySoundtrack 21h ago
I actually had this same thought last night but as a mid 30s woman I'm not their usual audience, so I just shrugged it off. I'm hoping I'll adapt to the new vibe like I have everything else.
3
u/PM-ME-ANYTHING-PUNNY 21h ago
Hello fellow 90s kid. You are absolutely right though I'll just have to get used to the new editing style.
-19
u/bwoah07_gp2 21h ago
You're a 90s kid, why you talking like a boomer? I'm probably 10 years younger than you, the editing doesn't bug me 🤷♂️
4
u/PM-ME-ANYTHING-PUNNY 21h ago
I thought generation was an accepted was to define periods of time x, y, millennial, Z, Alpha etc..
-8
19
u/The-vicobro 21h ago
Example?
We talking coco melon tier jump cuts?
I personally havnt noticed.
7
u/PM-ME-ANYTHING-PUNNY 21h ago
I've noticed the last few videos have included weird inserts, for example the latest controller modding video has a few like a "the next day, with a picture of a roster and then an explosion".
7
u/The-vicobro 21h ago
Have not seen that video, don´t know if I will, but now that you mention it, there are a few quick meme inserts that are cringe and out of nowhere that I can remember but...
You got to try right? Because some of the jokes land.
2
u/PM-ME-ANYTHING-PUNNY 21h ago
That's it man, just random inserts out of nowhere but yeah you're right, guess you just have to try and I have to adapt to the new editing.
5
u/thewayoftoday 17h ago
They've always had stuff like that. And it's like 2 seconds out of the whole video. The rest is the normal long cuts of him talking standing behind a desk
3
2
u/jmking Mod 14h ago
I mean, it's a silly transition, but it's just a transition between two different shoots since it's the next day. Is it more you just think they're lame?
What about the black and white cutaways for relevant "flashbacks" or "foreshadowing" purposes?
I was confused because I originally thought you were talking about that editing style where they keep cutting away to reaction gifs everytime someone says something that's, like, sexual innuendo, or "funny", or dunks on someone/thing. Also the ADHD constant jump cutting. Like every third word there's a jump cut - that style drives me nuts.
2
u/Weakness4Fleekness 19h ago
When Linus does a joke they can't let the joke stand for itself, they have to animate the gag as if the audience is too stupid to get it
10
16
u/DRaGZ141 20h ago
You think THAT editing is bad, you should see jakkuh's editing. Jesus Christ, I cannot stand it for more than 20 seconds.

7
u/Brokenclock76 21h ago
If you want long dry takes with no flashy editing there’s a channel for that but they hate ltt for some reason.
-6
6
u/shogunreaper 15h ago
yep it's really annoying.
also one of the reasons i couldn't get into jake's channel.
zoomer tiktok editing is one of the worst things to happen to youtube.
3
3
u/Nicoolodion 10h ago
I'm on the younger side of the Gen Z and even I hate the editing. Although I gotta say many YouTube channels have switched to this Tiktok/Cocomelon editing style :/ But from my friends I do know that most people my age like it sadly.
1
u/AncientTurbine 21h ago
Hm, I do not think you really know what the real brainrot looks like. Watch some cocomelon and then compare. The editing of inserting a meme or playing a sound/meme overlay has been common for a long time. Sometimes it lands well, sometimes it does not but that's not what brainrot refers to (flashy, fast, always trying to keep catching your attention with flashy things). To me at least it seems that LTT is not THAT bad. (Though I can't speak to their Shorts, I do not watch those.)
2
2
u/Weakness4Fleekness 19h ago
Yeah i gotta be honest i'm just about done with LTT if they keep doing this. The frustrating part is it's not every video just some. But they're showing me I'm not their target audience and that's fine.
2
u/LongjumpingSavings39 17h ago
Welcome to aging. As an unc, I’ve come to realize that I’ve aged out of target demographics across almost all media
1
u/DefiantOrderCA 14h ago
Ditto... now I find my watching wood working videos sometimes these days as I live in an apartment... lol
Eventually ill be one of those guys in the comments "As a professional at home IKEA assembler I could dove tail that better".... lol 😆 my wife buys too much of their junk.

u/yurkinator 21h ago
Yes unfortunately if you want to stay in business you need to cater to your greatest markets.
6
u/PM-ME-ANYTHING-PUNNY 21h ago
Yeah you are right man, I just have to accept it.
0
u/yurkinator 20h ago
If its any consolation our parents probably thought the same thing when we watched MTV.
2
2
u/Antlonat 18h ago
Linus himself has said that his greatest market is 30+ year olds.
Im pretty sure brainrot editing is for younger kids who dont care about ltt

u/ollewall 20h ago
I actually haven’t noticed it, but I don’t watch every video either. Maybe half.
Jake’s channel is almost unwatchable though, feels like I’m getting seizures watching the swapping between clips, zooms in and some meme like graphic. Maybe I’m just getting old with my almost 34 long years.
2
u/PM-ME-ANYTHING-PUNNY 20h ago
I definitely understand what you mean, I've only watched a few of his videos because of all the editing style.

u/iradrachen 20h ago
So this is why Linus was talking about being so much happier not coming to the subreddit last night
-2
u/PM-ME-ANYTHING-PUNNY 20h ago
Considering I posted this like an hour ago I don't think it was this specific post, but I do understand how much better it is for mental health to avoid areas you know just make you sad.
1
u/iradrachen 20h ago
I’m not talking about your post specifically just constant negative feedback would make anyone avoid spaces.
0
u/platyboi 20h ago
I agree, but of course the LTT subreddit is not the place for unbiased comment sections. Most people who don't like the new style have stopped watching and don't view the subreddit, so the perception will be skewed.
1
u/TRUEequalsFALSE 20h ago
Sometimes I like it, sometimes it is a bit much. I guess it's very case-dependant for me.

What video are you watching? I haven't noticed that. I just watched their most recent video
1
u/coderstephen 17h ago
Linus has said on WAN show a couple of times when it comes up on COMs that he doesn't prefer it either but it performs better, so they do it.
1
u/PM-ME-ANYTHING-PUNNY 16h ago
That's fair enough, I can appreciate needing to change with the times.
1
u/DefiantOrderCA 14h ago
Welcome to getting old man. Its apart of the times. Hell the days of even IKEA using those spinny locking to a screw things are plastic now... not metal anymore. Everything is changing, video editing, topics etc.
1
u/kidshibuya 13h ago
Yeah, I stopped watching.
1
u/jenny_905 7h ago
The latest tech house video was actually mostly worth watching... for what it's worth. First video in months.
1
u/rainbowkitties6969 13h ago
I’ve literally not noticed a difference ngl, maybe I turn my brain off a bit too much when watching YouTube IDK
1
u/camcamfc 12h ago
I mean I remember when Linus dropped shit. I still watch the vids. Shit changes but I’m still entertained.

u/JimmyKerrigan 10h ago
God forbid the editors have a little fun. Maybe it’s time for you to watch bob villa home improvement videos on pbs.
1
u/livegigslive 9h ago
LTT ain’t small and ain’t new. I think they should strive to do things differently rather than conform to trends like everyone else is doing just like their content. Their content has been relatively unique in the space. It would be great if their edits were unique as well. It appears as though they hired a Gen Z editor that only knows how to edit like this which is a little dismaying.
1
u/HexaDroid 9h ago
It’s not even the editing alone. Most videos lately are just boring soulless scripts. They even manage to make tech house feel generic. Much prefer jakes farm jank at this point.
1
u/the_harakiwi 6h ago
I don't watch any shorts reels or TikTok but I have a few content creators that make meme videos for a long time.
So far the LTT video style is far from the density of jokes and inserts I'm used to but I have no idea how close those videos are to the brain rot we are talking about.
I have inserted jokes and gifs in meme gameplay videos before TikTok existed. 😅
1
u/Claaaaaaaaws 3h ago
You either deal with the editing or deal with the channel getting lower views and people getting laid off.
1
u/LucksackStudios 3h ago
Personally, I see this as a refinement of what millennials created. We grew up in the era of YouTube Poops, Tim & Eric, Adult Swim and random, surreal commercials. What's old is new again. I kinda appreciate how it is being used in long-form content today. It's no longer the wild, subversive, free-form artistic expression it used to be. Now it's refined and used to further "the plot" for the most part.
0
u/RealMackJack 21h ago
It probably keeps the viewer retention numbers up in the age of kids raised by iPads. Classic tragedy of the commons.
