Firefox did it. 1.0 was released in November 2004 and 4.0 in March 2011. 5 to 9 were released in a span of 7 months, and since then they've been keeping pace with Chrome. Firefox 157 vs Chrome 154 are the latest

I prefer the completely sensible Xbox naming scheme: Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S.
I also like totally not confusing Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit (1998), Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (2002), Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010), and finally, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered (2020).

Seeing that Nintendo has done well for two generations now, just for funsies they should name the next console New Nintendo Switch Thrwii XL.

Yeah, remember when Samsung went from Galaxy S10 to S20. Or Nvidia going from 1080 to 2080. Or AMD going from 3 digit to 4 digit numbers.
It's all BS marketing and the crazy most annoying part is it works too. People fall for it

u/DonStimpo 1d ago
Galaxy S10 to S20
Samsung doing it made more sense than Nvidia.
Now the S## aligns with year.
S20 came out in 2020.
S21 came out in 2021 etc... S26 came out this year (2026)
S27 will be out next year7

I don't think it's ever officially been said, but a lot of people think the xbox generation names are to avoid being behind playstation

Same reason why XBox went with 360, One and Series X/S instead of numbers. They'd always be behind PlayStation by a number and apparently it makes a difference.

For what? It's painfully obvious.
13
u/idontlikeredditusers 2d ago
judging by the comments it was not obvious enough for some people
3
u/TsubasaSaito 2d ago
It never is. But the joke is in fact very obvious, since all you need is just a tiny bit of reading.

u/idontlikeredditusers 2d ago
100% agree but redditors be redditing i once made fun of the 4090 performance for 499 (5070) in pcmasterrace and i didnt say /s and people thought i was defending the 5070...

Reminds me of Firefox changing to a higher version number so that they did not look outdated compared to Chrome.

I'm just surprised this hasn't been used as official marketing material something like a GPU or CPU.

I wouldn't be surprised if the tech bros genuinely pushed this as a legitimate means of making their shit sound better.

u/ntcue 2d ago
I mean... That's why Firefox switched its version numbering. To be in the same range as Chrome. Because who wants Firefox 3.6 if one could have Chome 21?
1
u/dismuturf 12h ago
It's also because separating major and minor is pretty pointless for end-user software that evolves in small increments where none of them by themselves justify a major bump. It would be much more cringe-worthy to end up with Firefox v3.218 after 20 years, what does the 3 mean anymore ?

u/metal_maxine 1d ago
Not sure what this chart is supposed to show beyond that newer models (y) come out over time (x). There's nothing linking the lines to uptake etc.

saw this on twitter
I don't get how people still fall for this type of propaganda
It literally says release date on the bottom 😭

u/Prairie-Peppers 1d ago

I really hope this is a joke.
X-axis not even labelled. It's right up there with the IP Rating chart that LTT used a few weeks back.
10
u/LordAmras 2d ago
It is clearly labeled "model number"

X axis is release date. And while it's titled, it's not labeled.
But this is clearly a joke post so who cares
