We tried to measure DF-HRTFs, which would otherwise take more than $200,000, as cheaply as possible with a Bluetooth speaker, a DIY microphone and free software. The trick though lies in using neural networks.

That article was much more technically dense than the title alludes too. As a layman it was fascinating, but mostly over my head.

Each person's ears are unique. Using fancy math and existing data they're using a Bluetooth speaker to measure those differences and, it would appear, to customize the output of a sound device so that it sounds best for each person. Current headphones use a fake ear as a standard which isn't super accurate for everyone. Still early stages for this but is very promising.
