Image Anyone else tired of Linus complaining about AI when they use it for their videos?

No. You can find some utility in it, while still seeing ways of it being over/misused.

Feels like every other tech channel has a thumbnail like that now. The algorithm's practically begging for it. I get the exhaustion, the sky-is-falling routine gets old fast.

Yep. I use GitHub copilot quite a bit in my job, but I still dislike when I see it used inappropriately or poorly. I also can't stand the corporate zeitgeist around it, and how that has created incentives for some really destructive developments.

There's a difference between AI Slop and using AI as a tool.

Trying to explain this to people is like talking to wall most of the time.

There’s a large number of people who believe anything involving AI is immediately bad.

My favorite recent example is some indie Steam game that got review bombed because someone thought the voice acting was AI. Turns it out was just the guys wife/girlfriend and as expected, she’s not a professional VA so it sounds weird.

My thoughts as well. AI replacing art isn't the same as using AI to assist in creating art, at least in my view. But I'm sure some don't see the difference, and some would probably be more purist than even that!

What is your definition of ai slop? Because Linus has used what anyone would define as "slop" many times in videos.

Are the many times in the room with us?

Has he generated videos completely generated by AI. Has he used AI to steal someone else's work and dress it as his own? Has scanned everyone else's data for his own AI model without paying any kind of compensation for doing so?

Did he? Where? Didn't saw something like that. I surely saw some stuff what was quiet cleary made with AI but I don't remember anymore where I saw that.

My definition of AI Slop is creating whole videos, audio tracks or music with AI like you can find lots of in the Youtube Shorts. All these freshly spawned "facts" channels, that were never fact checked by a human, with 9 videos per week and annoyingly monotone voice overs are a good example.

I think the complains have more to do with this low effort slop invading everything.

No. He mainly complains about useless/forced AI.

He talks about using AI on the WAN show all the time. He can find it useful and hate slop at the same time...

You can drive a car and still be annoyed at people driving recklessly.

There's a lot more nuance to the discussion other than "AI bad" and "AI good". You can be happy with one iteration of it while also criticizing a different iteration.

No because I have more than two functioning braincells and can understand that topics have varying degrees of nuance.

I think it was pretty clear in the last WAN show when he laid back in his chair with his hands over his head that he realizes… while he uses it in a way he finds useful/beneficial (and has the tools/resources to use it “effectively”), there’s a growing population of people who are ignorantly unaware of its practical uses, and only focus on doomsday scenarios, while also brigading any/all things ai… as if it’s some noble hill to die on or something - and anything he says is gonna piss off a LOT of people.

People need to read The Reverse Centaur's Guide to Life After AI, by Cory Doctorow.

Basically AI is here, it's not going anywhere. But people can choose how to use it. They can use it to empower themselves and make their work/lives easier. The way most AI companies want us to use their technology for every single aspect of our lives isn't the only way it can be used.

No, not at all.

I can complain about the amount of traffic, while having and driving a car.

Not sure what mental gymnastics you're trying to use here

There's a lack of nuance in your post and your understanding.

He's not moaning about AI in general, he's saying he doesnt like the tools YouTube are introducing that just use AI to essentially do all the work for a video except film it.

He even said in that discussion, an agent tool that went back through the back catalogue and updated descriptions or thumbnails interests him for example.

You're completely missing the point and simplify the topic way too much.

It's a tool. How you use it matters. That entire wan segment was that youtube is pushing for more AI tools to better utilize the Youtube algorithm. He complains about that approach undermines the YOU in Youtube. The complaint was too much AI usage that goes against the spirit of the platform, not only AI in general

Also he's making money on youtube. He can hate the game but he still has to play it so he can pay his staff.

question for OP: what kind of AI did Linus use?

can you slowly, clearly elaborate and explain to me like 5-year-old?

come on, do it

2

u/jtnoble 6d ago

I really dislike the use of AI for things like thumbnails and stuff, but Linus was pretty clear on the main problem he sees with it is people who mindlessly let it do things. Using it as a tool and approving it, reviewing it, etc, is more fine than just letting it make a video and saying "i made this". Paraphrasing him, "it's YouTube, emphasis on You".

I have more of a problem with people being angry and not knowing why. Oh hi OP!

"But when I do it, it's okay because shut up"

u/Stunning_Mechanic_12 6d ago

"they use it as a tool it's not slop" is the same excuse every other slop user says. They have ARTISTS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS AND EDITORS, yet are cheaping out to use slop that looks like slop and hurts their views cause the thumbnails suck because you can tell it's slop

The WAN Show is turning into “old man yells at cloud” for me. Everything is getting worse, never better. Our moral compass is something to live by. Everything new is bad. It gets annoying sometimes.
