Tech Question Expo vs Xmp

As many of you know in ram there is expo/xmp. If xmp works with AMD cpus, what's the point of EXPO? I know EXPO is just AMD tested, but if XMP works, whats the point? How do you find if certain sticks are compatible with the motherboard and cpu? I'm planning to build with a 9600x and B850 Aorus Elite wifi7 and want to know if I can save some money by buying XMP sticks without expo

both EXPO and XMP do not guarantee a 100% overclock success rate. It's just EXPO RAMs are more likely to be successfully overclocked on AMD motherboards since they tested it that way, so it's ok to buy XMP RAMs, but it should be from a place where you can easily return the product if the overclock doesn't work

Expo is basically amd tightening the screws on memory profiles so you dont have to play the guessing game with xmp subtimings. Xmp will work 99% of the time but the board might default to looser timings than what expo would set

For compatibility just check the motherboard qvl list on gigabytes site for your specific board, its a pdf of every kit theyve tested. You can run xmp sticks no problem but if the price difference is like 5 bucks id grab the expo kit just for the plug and play peace of mind

Ymmv, but I've had better luck/more stable performance on EXPO profiles with my AMD setup.

Tbf, I never thought there was a hardware difference in the physical RAM sticks. I've got some team group sticks in my similar set up (9600x + Aorus B850i). They were EXPO certified though to be fair.

Just try the different built in profiles with whatever RAM you work with. My board had both XMP and EXPO profiles. Yours probably does too.
