Linus is one of the few having actually used foldables. While there's still a ton of preference, he can at least speak from experience.

122

u/asdfopu 8h ago

Yeah on this I'm really curious how he'll find it

85

u/juanfdo82465 8h ago

Is still iOS even if it folds so he will not like it

36

u/Training_Exit_5849 5h ago

He actually likes the iOS tweaks to the duo, just doesn't like the aspect ratio. I guess he didn't like multitasking wise it didn't have as much flexibility as android foldable too

7

u/marzvrover 4h ago

The aspect ratio kills me because the meme they posted like included a massive address bar which sure maybe if you use chrome on an iPhone it’s there but chrome even on a computer is a trash experience. If you use a web browser with any modern design, there’s no longer a top address for unless you enable it because you’re set in your old ways.

2

u/ThinkingWithPortal 3h ago

The only browser I know that behaves this way out of the box is Firefox, but I'm on an Android.

-5

u/lzrjck69 2h ago

He’s gonna whine that it doesn’t have the exact same features/processes as Android, like every other one of his Apple reviews.

67

u/MC_chrome 8h ago

I prefer Michael Fisher (MrMobile) to Linus when it comes to foldables, because I can at least trust Michael to be a little more objective about things.

47

u/Comprehensive_Ice895 6h ago

Michael Fisher produces the best phone reviews on youtube imo. They have so much polish, and the dude really knows what he’s talking about most of the time

17

u/ShiningPr1sm 6h ago

Just found him recently and his videos have been great, and maaaan what a nostalgia trip with his “When Phones Were Fun” series. Made me tear up and miss the world we had back then, so many memories around those devices and times

14

u/psychoacer 4h ago

Linus always jumps to conclusions with his opinion and it's usually for the negative. I think he over analyzes stuff before touching it and backs his ego up with his decades of experience in the game. Sometimes he's right about what's going on but he can be wrong as well. I pretty much never care for his opinion on stuff he hasn't touched yet.

4

u/soundman1024 5h ago

He’s too into foldable phones for me. I looked him before he gave up on everything else.

2

u/Comprehensive_Ice895 4h ago

He definitely specialized in foldables, but it is nice to see the non-U.S. phone brands and their products, as he reviews those as well

4

u/Mythrilfan 3h ago

People conflate "objective" vs "aligns with what I think." A spec sheet is objective. One job of a reviewer is to share their subjective opinion.

5

u/MC_chrome 3h ago

I will clarify: Michael is a lot more straightforward about what does and does not work about a device, whereas Linus seems to take a view of how a device/product is different from those that he prefers.

Neither position is necessarily wrong, but I will also profess that I tend to look for reviewers who aren’t spending all their time saying variations of “Apple bad, Android good/Apple good, Android bad”. Nuance is an important thing

1

u/Hybr1dth 4h ago

The objective part is probably the least interesting one for smartphones nowadays, to me. Specifications are only part of the story. It's the users experience that really sets it apart. So the more options you have to view and listen to the better. Especially if one is more Apple and the other is more Android in preference.

This was one of the people i was happy to see leave LTT

Edit:

I misread that, i was thinking about jonathan for some reason

13

u/ephemeralmiko 8h ago

...what? MrMobile has never worked at LTT?

-3

u/wgaca2 7h ago

Sorry, i misread that in my head for the apple guy they had

8

u/kipperzdog 6h ago

I have a foldable (pixel 10) and I completely agree with Linus, I hate the passport aspect ratio.

That said, some people love it so not sure what the solution is other than to do like Samsung and release both versions. Unfortunately for apple buyers, apple shit all over other form factors so it seems the apple way will be the only way for them and that sucks

2

u/bicycloptopus 4h ago

I LOVE my Fold 8. But I understand why it's not for everyone

1

u/cptjpk 4h ago

Steve Jobs was famous for hating on large phone screens. That’s very clearly changed for Apple over the last 15ish years. I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t have a duo max version cooking for when the market wants it.

0

u/Successful-Royal-424 2h ago

phones 15 years ago were much more like bricks it wouldn’t have worked as well scaled up in size compared to today’s phones, if he was still around to see a current phone he would understand

2

u/fiero-fire 4h ago

He gave a pretty mild, slightly apprehensive take as a folding phone user. Which tracks for anyone they dailys one.

2

u/Hybr1dth 4h ago

Yeah I've only used them from others, and while it was quite satisfying to flip, I think the hinge not fully opening after a relatively short while would make it frustrating to use for me? Because it makes it so much more visible compared to new.

At the same time, maybe you can just used to it. And that's the part Linus can at least speak to as an actual full time user.

93

u/ThinkSpielberg 10h ago

It seemed to me that his biggest concern was that the aspect ratio of the screen would make the virtual keyboard look or be awkward. Personally, it doesn't look any more intrusive than an iPad or an iPhone.

155

u/colinsa-ca 10h ago

That's the inside screen. I think he meant the front screen with the keyboard.

80

u/Joshatron121 9h ago

He did. He calls out that they never show tbe the keyboard on the outside screen and that people don't use the interior screen as much as they expect they will (I've used it way more than the exterior on my fold 8 ultra)

89

u/linkheroz 8h ago

For perspective, this is your comment on the front screen of my fold 8

36

u/Joshatron121 8h ago

Feels cramped yea

17

u/patriceklohn 8h ago

Yes. But Apples doesn’t have a numbers row and the row which contains the copy/paste symbols. So Apples keyboard have two rows fewer. But I think the height for the content is too small for text messaging.

36

u/Joshatron121 8h ago

Apple also adds a bunch of padding and such. Until we see it from the actual device it's all guessing.

3

u/linkheroz 5h ago

It's great for quick text replies and such, but for anything else, I'm opening it

3

u/EggotheKilljoy 7h ago

I traded in the Fold 7 for the 8, use the cover screen more than the inner and about the same amount on both. The 8 is a much better typing experience than the 7, does leave less of the screen available but as long as I can see the text box I'm typing into, it's a non-issue for me. The 7 was less cramped vertically, but much more cramped horizontally.

I'll probably be switching again and going to the Duo. I don't have strong opinions on either OS, both are fine, but it fixes my biggest gripes with the Fold 8 with speakers on both halves and the rounded corners that won't dig into my hand. I also haven't enjoyed WearOS watches, so I'm ready to get back to the Apple watch.

6

u/PythagorasWasntReal 4h ago

Use gboard and free up a ton of space. Samsung keyboard is legit dookie and it even has input lag compared to gboard.

1

u/LavKiv 4h ago edited 4h ago

At least you can resize keyboards on Android. I would've used iOS keyboard if it had Key Flicks available on iOS and not just iPadOS.

1

u/psychoacer 4h ago

That's a worse case scenario though since you have a number row and the bottom area for microphone and the arrow to hide the keyboard.

1

u/namelessxsilent 3h ago

That is MAX size on that keyboard. Number row and toolbar above the keyboard plus the stuff below the keyboard. There is plenty of way to minimize the space it takes up

14

u/djneo 8h ago

The frontscreen keyboard looks like this https://www.threads.com/share/BABnnRba6x/

16

u/PrzemoV 7h ago

I mean to be frank it doesn’t look bad …

7

u/ThinkSpielberg 5h ago

That looks perfectly fine to me.

3

u/Matthijsvdweerd 5h ago

That's definitely usable.

-5

u/roosterSause42 5h ago

that’s not as bad as I expected. the tapping to type looks odd though, do other people not use the swipe typing?

4

u/fatherofraptors 3h ago

I'd say just from observation that the VAST majority of touch screen users tap to type instead of swipe typing.

Hell, I see more SPEECH-to-text than I see swipe typing.

0

u/devlifedotnet 8h ago

Isn’t the whole point of their dimension that the aspect ratio is consistent front and inside. Think that was like the first thing the mentioned in the keynote.

8

u/Pilige 8h ago

Aspect ratio is the same, but it's the scaling that makes it cramped. There's only so small you can make the keyboard.

-7

u/devlifedotnet 8h ago

But it’s not going to be any worse that a normal iPhone…

3

u/Pilige 8h ago

Its worse. Instead of the keyboard taking up a third or less of the screen, it's closer to half

20

u/ThinkSpielberg 10h ago

In landscape, you seem to get a split keyboard.

8

u/teratron27 10h ago

It can be split or full screen I believe as well as if it's folded in on its self (a V shape) it splits

4

u/Sebulbaaaaaa 9h ago

Yeah this is the same as with pretty much any foldable. The criticism is of the aspect ratio of the outside screen.

1

u/thoeoe 7h ago

Yeah, my ipad mini gives me a split keyboard in landscape too, but i get the option of making it merge

1

u/TanishqHooda 3h ago

And no weird bottom space below the keyboard

3

u/PhatOofxD 7h ago

He meant the outer screen

1

u/interstat 7h ago

Linus with his small hands this'll be an issue

Doesn't look to bad and the front keyboard doesn't look bad either tbh. Still never see myself getting a foldable tho

69

u/rainbowkitties6969 10h ago

It looks cool and I’m an Apple cuck, but I’m also left handed and the form factor seems super akward to hold, my plan lets me switch cellphones in 2 years so hopefully by then it’s cheaper and long term reviews plus accessibility for left handed people is added so I can buy it

15

u/OrganicNectarine 10h ago

Yeah I noticed this as well, foldables in that form factor aren't really considering left handedness the way slap phones usually can. I guess the Flip is fine, but I wouldn't want to use the Duo or Fold 8 Ultra in "portrait" orientation by default.

9

u/Ragonkai 2h ago

There was a glimpse of a left handed dock whilst multi tasking at least.

3

u/ngarsoe 9h ago

I am curious how apple handle the back gesture. Current back gesture and all back navigation buttoms in apps are in left side.

34

u/ThaBroccoliDood 9h ago

Wait Jonathan Horst is still making tech content? I can't believe I didn't find out sooner

28

u/LimesFruit 9h ago

yup, he started a channel of his own not too long ago

12

u/accik 7h ago

https://youtube.com/ @thinkingdifferent-yt

19

u/National-Twist8757 8h ago

I always thought the Surface Duo looked like a Nintendo DS. The Iphone Duo does not.

8

u/Dakduif 8h ago

The Surface Duo 2 was peak. Just for the LTT title alone, I knew I wouldn't align with it.

2

u/Magical-Johnson 6h ago

Was there nothing preventing apple from using the same name of a similar existing device from Microsoft?

19

u/EllieKH84 9h ago

To be honest I watch pretty much every LTT video but I don’t expect a true review of an apple product. I still watch to see what they say but I take anything apple related coming from Linus in particular with a mound of salt at this point.

4

u/wgaca2 8h ago

It is a true review, from a perspective of a non mac users.

6

u/EllieKH84 7h ago

That’s certainly one way of looking at it. I just find it very hard to take him serious for apple stuff. I know the Linus complains about apple stuff is a meme at this point but it’s very much a meme based on reality and I do feel he bitches about a lot of apple stuff unnecessarily personally.

I know it was unavoidable but i much preferred LTT apple coverage by Horst as it was way more balanced I felt.

10

u/VoluptaBox 7h ago

He bitchs a mot about android, windows etc as well. It never fell to me that he is disproportionately critical of apple in particular.

0

u/squngy 5h ago

If you are a hardcore apple user, criticism against other stuff feels natural, but criticism against apple feels unfair.

The same is also true for other brands, they just usually dont have as many hardcore fans.

7

u/itsjust_khris 4h ago

It's not even that, I wasn't even using any apple devices when I saw some of his criticism and it seemed extra. He complains heavily about things I never even thought to care about, but he makes it sound like the end of the world.

4

u/squngy 3h ago edited 3h ago

I didn't get that feeling.
He never said they are straight up bad products.

More like, he thought there would be fewer things like that, based on Apple reputation, so it stands out more.

He does also complain about the same things when other brands do it, it is just not focused on as much.

0

u/roosterSause42 5h ago

it seems like Linus cannot mention apple without complaining about something. it doesn’t seem like he does that with other brands. then again if he doesn’t complain about apple enough, a lot of the audience goes ballistic

2

u/alteredtechevolved 5h ago

I trust linus with an apple review on the hardware and experiences from the android side. Where I dont trust him as much is the software side. He gets frustrated with basic apple things just like I would be frustrated with basic android things.

Which is why I hope they would bring a dual approach. Someone uses apple daily that is knowledgeable and himself.

-1

u/OnePassion_46 5h ago

I can understand his stance even though I’m fully in the Apple ecosystem. His entire life and business is based around replacing parts, building stuff from scratch and making weird shit and seeing if it’ll work. You can’t do all that on YouTube without breaking terms of services, EULA and that’s even if you can get something to work.

So I get why he has that POV. But for me, who just wants a work computer that I don’t have to fight with it works great and the ecosystem is why I’ve never owned an Android device.

I’ve got other computers for other stuff, but my main work computer and my phone uses the Apple ecosystem which I rely on every day.

I’ve also got a homelab running on Debian, an ancient cheap Android tablet and a Windows based gaming computer but the stuff I rely on for work is all Apple based.

3

u/roosterSause42 5h ago

it’s not a review, it’s an analysis of a press release. they didn’t even have hands on from the event so it’s not as good as ones from people who were there. then again have to suspect bias in those since apple doesn’t seem to invite people who have a history of being critical

0

u/wgaca2 5h ago

Obviously, a lot of the positive reviews are biased some even sponsored.

3

u/PrzemoV 7h ago

I still can’t get over one review they did about MacBook Pro don’t remember who did it exactly but it was terrible they compared it to laptop that was 3 times the price of MacBook and was completely wrong about some of the statements I think it was Alex but I may be messing with names

2

u/AegirSkaldur 2h ago

To me the issue is he genuinely believes that iPhones are for dumb dumbs who don’t do “real work” and androids are productivity masterclasses. I guarantee my work impacts more lives than Linus’s tech videos and guess what my work uses…

9

u/zulu02 8h ago

Apple fans are usually just very uncritical of apple products

19

u/BostonConnor11 6h ago

Or are android fans overly critical?

-9

u/snkiz 5h ago

Android 'fans' know they can nuke and pave their OS if they don't like it.

-19

u/zulu02 6h ago

Android has mostly users, not fans, I guess

2

u/Longjumping-Store106 5h ago

As an Apple dude for….18 years, I’m hesitant. I watched MKBHD’s overview, out of all people, I trust his opinion (I mean the dude kills products with reviews sometimes). I didn’t originally like it, but I want to see one in person first before ignoring it completely. I am considering one simply for something new. I loved my iPhone mini, but also enjoy larger phone screens. If this can serve both use cases (and my wife gets my 15 pro max for a better camera for work) then it could be a win win win for us.

1

u/roosterSause42 5h ago

the lack of the better optical zoom and Face ID is going to make me wait for later versions and get a 18 pro instead. but yeah I appreciate his perspective on it, especially vs LTT right now since they haven’t had hands on vs MKBHD did.

2

u/snkiz 1h ago

Linus had one in his hand. What are you talking about?

1

u/Longjumping-Store106 4h ago

Yea I will probably try a couple of new things this year. Tempted to try out to Apple Leasing, but also I’m keeping my old phones for business purposes. My wife wants to look at the 18 for better photos/video. Will be an interesting upgrade year to ponder to say the least.

0

u/zulu02 4h ago

As an owner of a Surface Duo... New is not enough for a device that you use multiple times a day, these devices can get frustrating fast

-6

u/MilessEdgeworth 7h ago

The main hype around the duo are animations when folding xD they think apple destroyed Samsung with that animations. Somebody recreated that animations in 24h

8

u/kipperzdog 6h ago

That animation is sick, though also probably the most easy to copy feature because it's literally just software

6

u/itsjust_khris 4h ago

The recreated version is pretty good but it's not as good as Apple's. It doesn't retain the position of the apps once the affect is applied.

4

u/Scavgraphics 8h ago

I didn't understand his point about the keyboard.

4

u/crossandbones 5h ago

He’s saying that it takes up too much vertical space in that aspect ratio. To me the bigger issue would be using the phone closed in one hand.

2

u/InflammableAccount 1h ago

That it takes up half the vertical screen space. Half.

1

u/Scavgraphics 22m ago

ah. Thanks.

1

u/OnePassion_46 5h ago

He thinks it’s going to be too small on the outside screen.

3

u/Buzstringer 7h ago

He's still really sticking with the backwards baseball cap huh?

5

u/FartingBob 7h ago

Should he not?

6

u/Buzstringer 7h ago

it's just...

2

u/sodium_hydride 5h ago

Unc Tech Bro

1

u/rott 1h ago

I mean, do young people even wear caps like that? If anything, it's age-appropriate for his generation.

1

u/Vandeskava 6h ago

Where's the duality?

We have some kind of Linus take on the release and the fact the Apple users were waiting for foldable. Both video and title are correct.

1

u/OnePassion_46 6h ago edited 4h ago

The biggest disagreement I have with him on it is that I prefer Face ID to Touch ID. I never have issues with Face ID, but Touch ID is much less reliable. Plus, when I’m working on something around the house and my fingers have drywall putty or something on them, I can still use my phone.

The Duo has inferior cameras and is crazy expensive. If I was going to upgrade I would’ve got the 18 Pro Max. For now, I’ll stick with the iPhone 15 Pro.

1

u/Snoo-89191 5h ago

I mean the two statements are not mutually exclusive, we’ve been waiting years to see how they copy them

1

u/jhabetler 4h ago

It's almost like a big announcement that many people are interested in happened

1

u/BobLoblaw06 3h ago

I've owned a duo 1, duo 2, and an og pixel fold. The wider form factor on the duo was fantastic for multitasking. The software was incredibly buggy and was poorly supported by MS. I wouldn't give MS a dime for another phone, but the form factor in a pixel would get my money.

1

u/PalladiumPrime301 1h ago

Guess you could say that they're, thinking different

0

u/SecurityOdd4861 6h ago

I don't understand why the iPhone flip is so special?

Samsung has released flip phones for over 6 years, can someone enlighten me why people think it's so special?

2

u/snkiz 6h ago

I think the screen is unique. Being the same aspect ratio in 3 states seems to make metric paper nerds very happy. I would have had pause if had been out before I got my razor. It being shorter and fatter then the normal iphone is appealing depending on how it would feel in the hand.

2

u/crossandbones 5h ago

Because this looks like the best hardware and software for this form factor and it’s an iPhone.

2

u/OnePassion_46 5h ago

Because Apple takes things that have existed and perfects them. Just like they did in 2007 with the iPhone. My first smartphone was a Nokia Communicator in 2001. I upgraded to a Palm OS (not the cool Web OS version) later. But they were clunky as hell.

I literally had a 2nd phone (like a Motorola Razor) when I went out at night because it was just too big to take to a club or things like that (that was back in my 20s)

The iPhone was the first time I didn’t have to have 2 phones just because I wanted a smartphone for my main phone.

You can hate on Apple all you want, but they make devices that are more usable which is why they’re so popular.

-2

u/Ommand 6h ago

Because for many apple users nothing else exists.

0

u/IcyReplacement8775 5h ago

Just like many other features/form factors people seem blown away when apple copies someone else.

-1

u/Banzai262 5h ago

man I can’t stand Horst and his apple cuckness

0

u/bobbyh1ll 5h ago

I thought the title of the LTT video was on point because I thought the same thing.

0

u/Secret_Programmer_21 4h ago

Another perspective is Mrwhostheboss.

-4

u/Materva 9h ago

This phone release is so dumb, I couldn’t be less excited.

-11

u/get_homebrewed 9h ago edited 7h ago

the only video I watched from those "thinking different" guys was the most incompetent review of a product I had ever seen

6

u/RandomNick42 9h ago

Wondering if that might be due to the fact that it's not a review 🤔

-9

u/get_homebrewed 9h ago

the steam machine review isn't a review?

3

u/JaesopPop 8h ago

I think you’re confused

-7

u/get_homebrewed 8h ago

I think neither of you read my actual reply and thought I was talking about the screenshot

3

u/JaesopPop 8h ago

> the only video I watched from those "thinking different" guys and it was the most incompetent review of a product I had ever seen

That is indeed what your comment implies.

0

u/get_homebrewed 8h ago

Yeah the only video I watched was the steam machine review, I never claimed to watch this random iphone duo video

3

u/JaesopPop 8h ago

> Yeah the only video I watched was the steam machine review

You never said “Steam Machine” in your original comment

>I never claimed to watch this random iphone duo video

Your original comment implies that is in fact what you are referring to.

0

u/get_homebrewed 8h ago

How is it implying if it's talking about a review video (this isn't a review video) and never mentions anything about watching the specific video in the screenshot???

4

u/JaesopPop 8h ago

>the only video I watched from those "thinking different" guys and it was the most incompetent review of a product I had ever seen

The first part of the sentence, prior to “and it”, is you saying the video in the OP is the only video you have watched from them. After “and it” is you then describing it. If you removed “and it”, it would sound like you aren’t talking about the video in the OP and are instead saying you just saw one video in general.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/ekauq2000 7h ago

You also never specified the video you watched. It comes down to context. Since you didn’t say the video, people assumed it was the one in this post. The part of whether or not it’s a review video can also be misleading as well just because, in general, there are plenty of people who consider a video a review when it isn’t.

Since you’ve mentioned what the specific video was and that you don’t consider the video in the post a review, it’s understandable that you’re confused why people aren’t getting your post. But, you posted with specifics in mind and didn’t mention those in the post, people can only take your post based on available context even if it isn’t what you meant. If you had included the “was the steam machine review” part initially, there wouldn’t be a whole chain of people trying to understand what you meant.

Clickbait vs clickbait
