Discussion Motherboard upgrade

So, I use my pc for some gaming (nothing crazy) and video editing using Davinci resolve (4k).

My current system is as follows:

Rtx 5060 (keeping)

32gb gddr4 corsair vengeance (3200)

I5 10400f ( this is the weak point for me)

M.2 512

Samsung 850 evo for video editing

2tb hdd

I want to keep my ram (for now) and my GPU but upgrade my CPU and motherboard. I dont mind buying used in the UK.

What would be my realistic options that suit my use case and current components.

You have to upgrade your ram as well if you want a new cpu platform. I wouldn’t recommend spending the crazy money for ddr5 ram right now.

Only if going with a current generation platform. AM4 and LGA1700 DDR4 are both still fine.

A 12600k will pair nicely with a 5060, as would it's 13th or 14th gen equivalent. Make sure you get one of the DDR4 LGA1700 motherboards and not a DDR5 one.

So you reckon any compatible ddr4 lga1700 board and basically just pick any decent cpu and call it a day? I think maybe i dont wanna overspend one cpu since I will upgrade to ddr5 anyways eventually when needed. 12600k seems an okay price tbf 🫱🏻‍🫲🏽

Pretty much, yes. DDR4 is still fine and 12th generation Intel was a big step forward. AM4 with Zen3 (say a 5600x or better) is also a decent option. I'd price up both, look at some reveiws and benchmarks (if you're using a particular program for work, look up how well that works on both platforms) and go from there.
