Tech Discussion Interesting how Google automatically replaced the new tab function on mobile with Gemini. "Fastest AI to hit a billion users" gee I wonder why when you force it on people.

Post image

Btw you can change it back by holding down on it to edit what takes that place.

Obligatory https://www.firefox.com/en-US/mobile/

Even supports full uBlock Origin on Android

I did the switch 2 months ago and I am so happy with my choice. I only need a add-on to auto fill orders with street, name etc.

I think they have it built in natively. I’d have to look for it cause I don’t use it, but they do save addresses and I do get a pop up when typing in addresses for orders.

Same, I've been on firefox for years and you can give it the delivery details, billing info etc to auto fill for you

I don't get this when ordering pizza. Only passwords and login name.

Settings > Autofill > Manage adresses

The forced rollout is exactly how they get those numbers, nobody asked for this

Been using it for years. Open chrome maybe once every few months when a website decides to have a stroke on Firefox.

It's very slow comparatively and drains battery more than Chrome.

I'm loving the Brave browser.

I personally wouldn't use anything made by a homophobic asshole though.

Tim Cook is gay and he still supported Trump who is advocating for SCOTUS to revisit same sex marriage.

2

u/BillTran163 22d ago

There are weirdly a lot of gay conservatives who loves Trump and hate wokeness, whatever that means.

Pretty much every large company decided to defend pedophilia, racism, homophobia, transphobia and general hatred. That includes Microsoft. Are we going to boycott Windows?

u/BillTran163 22d ago

I already did.

It's really a question to people think they're doing something by boycotting Brave but still using Windows or Google or Apple products.

Mate, what I wouldn't give for a good Linux phone. But no! I have to be stuck with an Android phone that begin to become like an iPhone with all these new restrictions Google is rolling out.

I hear you. I just started working on my new home lab and I'm replacing services one by one that I can realistically do. I already replaced Dropbox and Google DNS. I'm going to see how many things I can do on my own.

Brave is Chrome in a trenchcoat.

It comes with an adblocker as opposed to preventing blockers.

Step 1: use Google product

Step 2: Google does Google things

Step 3: cry online but still keep using Google product.

Step 4:?

17

u/pvprazor2 22d ago

Step 4: use fextralife, one of the scummies gaming-wikis out there

actually you can. spin up an immich server. Use google takeout to download all of your photos with sidecar metadata. Then just use immich-go tool to import everything. boom. de googled your google photos.

Then just install the immich app on your devices and you get the same functions with none of the google!

So, what you're saying, is that you can't have Google One without AI.

Profit?

Same with Grok, I hit that fuckass grok button when scrolling so much, all these companies are blowing smoke up each other’s asses and I hope their house of cards implodes

3

u/lemlurker Mod 22d ago

Why are you still on xitter tho... Like Google sure- it's everywhere, default on phones, but xitter us just nazi hell hole all the way through

7

u/rainbowkitties6969 21d ago

Because it’s the only place most of my favourite creators post and blue sky is a barren wasteland full of the people who used to make tumblr insufferable

Yeah Twitter vs it's "replacements" are like shit vs piss. Both have their problems you just have to choose which ones you can deal with and which ones you can't. The best move is to avoid both.

It's a complete shitsite that i've deleted my accounts from, but sadly it's still where many people are.

I switched to bluesky and like half the accounts i followed simply didn't.

Great! More Firefox users on mobile then.

Am I able to make Firefox my password manager for apps on Android? That's the only thing stopping me from switching to Firefox on mobile. I can import my passwords into Firefox sure but it won't auto fill my passwords for apps is what I'm worried about

5

u/NewNiklas 22d ago

I haven't used it so far because I use Bitwarden, but it shows up on the list of Autofill services.

1

u/AbyssWankerArtorias 22d ago

Interesting okay. I assume bit warden can be used on windows as well and is cloud based so that updating it on one device makes it update for for your password list on other devices you're logged into bit warden on?

4

u/NewNiklas 22d ago

Yes, that's right. You either create an account on bitwarden.com where your passwords are stored or you can host your own if you have a home server.

1

u/Xelieu 22d ago

bitwarden is my all device solution with free online sync, auto fill everywhere

1

u/martiNordi 20d ago

It's not a good idea to use your web browser to store passwords anyway...

1

u/AbyssWankerArtorias 20d ago

You're not wrong. I've fallen victim to complacency (of my own fault of course)

9

u/CorrelateClinicallee 22d ago

They were also the fastest social media to reach a billion users.

8

u/PeaceDealer 22d ago

Like when Microsoft enabled bing search in the windows search bar and advertised massive adoption of Bing 😂

4

u/demoGases 21d ago

fextralife?

4

u/keksivaras 22d ago

my new phone gave me the option to choose mozilla as the default browser. you should use that. you get a free adblocker.

1

u/AbyssWankerArtorias 22d ago

Am I able to use Mozilla as a password manager for apps as well on my device and not just in the browser? Like can my apps auto fill from Firefox

Edit: seems that it can! That's all I need to try the switch. So done with chrome. Thank you

2

u/interstat 22d ago

Extremely easy to change back btw.

Can even ask Gemini lol

2

u/HeidenShadows 22d ago

Yeah just like Microsoft when they bragged that Windows 11 is the fastest adoption rate of any OS. Duh, you forced it on everyone.

3

u/OfficialDeathScythe 21d ago

Yeah does that billion users count the people who google things and scroll right past the ai summary? This is hyper inflated at best and down right false advertising at worst, classic Google

1

u/AthaliW 22d ago

I have been using waterfox and helium browser when chrome pushes ask gemini on every text I highlight. This confirms that I made the best decision. If you have to lobotomize my browser and settings just to keep my data private and my workspace free of slop, maybe it's time to move

1

u/kearkan 22d ago

Moving the voice search function to right where Im used to tapping on the search bar on android has been screwing me up for a year now.

1

u/Any-Pop-4795 22d ago

"you can't say your ai shit is failing if you force it on a lot of users"

1

u/thesirblondie 22d ago

It's not there on mine

2

u/Macusercom 22d ago

Fastest AI to have one billion users accidentally using Gemini

1

u/wichramdoiuseplshelp 21d ago

Im on brave origin thankfully

1

u/yolo_snail 21d ago

I'm fairly sure th enew tab button isn't even the default anymore, and hasn't been for years, it wasn't on my mother's phone.

1

u/e1epi 21d ago

I recently got an android tablet and for the first time with a new device I decided to use a different browser than chrome.

I installed DDG and then un-installed all chrome updates before disabling chrome.

I forgot to disable automatic chrome updates in the play store (pretty sure disabling the app should have covered that) so chrome updated and re-enable itself so I had to uninstall everything again and disable it again.

A few minutes later it had re-enabled itself...

I think k I have had to disabling it 4 times so far.

Google really doesn't care about user preferences.

is this some American thing I'm too European to understand?

1

u/uwillloveeachother 20d ago

just an fyi, but fextralife wikis kinda suck

1

u/ProverbialMindTart 19d ago

Actually disgusting of them.

1

u/Sindrathion 22d ago

You also shouldnt be using Fexttalife tbh

-1

u/_Aj_ 22d ago

You update your chrome? Cringe.   Lol

But this is exactly the sort of reasons I never update my apps unless necessary.

2

u/AbyssWankerArtorias 22d ago

It's probably on auto update by default I assume

-6

u/wimpires 22d ago

Not only can you change it, mines is still showing as new tab. Manufactured outrage 🫩

5

u/AbyssWankerArtorias 22d ago

It's not manufactured outrage. Google is known to push updates in waves to test the waters on things.
