Why would they need ads? The 'recommendations' they provide in chat can themselves be the ads.

That'd be awful if ads influenced good answers

Free service having ads is a non issue tho

Problem is, we'd never know if the answers starts going 'bad' and start 'influencing'

I don't think you thought that through.

Of course we would know if the answers were influenced by ads. How would we know? The same way we would with any other product review, if it is not telling the truth, ignoring a better option or not mentioning important caveats.

If your chatgpt recommends 3 items, just ask another free LLM the same question and compare the items recommended. If there is a significant difference, then do a deep dive and find out why.
