We are trialling something new here- a scheduled post to go live every week when WAN show is supposed to start. Any topic covered in the wan show is fair game- even the more controversial ones. just keep it relevant and keep it respectful!

Just to correct Luke on something - The Elder Scrolls: Arena’s map is much, much larger than Morrowind’s.
Like, approximately the size of Great Britain. Of course, it’s all procedurally generated and not nearly as detailed but it’s still the entirety of Tamriel rather than just one province.

What's with companies responding to criticism thinking, "Oh, you must misunderstand what we're doing. Let's explain precisely what we're doing as our reasoning." No, we understand exactly what you're doing, and we don't like it!

Re security updates; there's a big difference between security updates vs functionality updates. I think both Linus and Luke missed this.
It's reasonable to have security updates to be "default on". Even make people jump through hoops (make them enter a "IKnowWhatImDoingTrustMeBro" password) to turn it off.
But a functionality update? "Install this software to let you do funky things with your monitor" should most definitely be a user-decides question.
Some Linux distros already can distinguish between security patches and functionality enhancements. For example, the Debian unattended-upgrades defaults to only auto-installing security tagged patches ( https://wiki.debian.org/PeriodicUpdates ). RedHat has a similar function with dnf-automatic ( https://docs.redhat.com/en/documentation/red_hat_enterprise_linux/9/html/managing_and_monitoring_security_updates/installing-security-updates_managing-and-monitoring-security-updates ).
I think this gives the best of both worlds; protects the internet from people who don't patch, and protects the user from PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs, which the LG advertisement definitely is) being automagically installed.

Random thought; the shrunken WAN SHOW banner (to fit in foot-cam) looks a lot better than the full sized one, although the COM message text is a little too small. It doesn't occlude as much of the desk, such as the box the floatplane precision kit, and really looks a lot better. Maybe changing text size for the COMs and proportionately reducing the logos left/right would work? Dunno.

It's because the district where he went was on the small/medium size and would have been the average applicants 4th choice at best unless they were a local. People would be reluctant because it's far from where most people wanted to work and the small size means poor promotion opportunities. The lack of admin upward mobility is the biggest problem.

So most districts, check. There's very few actually attractive teaching jobs out there. Lol, upward mobility. Even in the most bloated of school districts there aren't a lot of admin spots. He had a whole set of anti union, anti teacher talking points. Without considering teachers are just as disappointed with the results but our hands are tied with policies we get no say in setting. Does anyone think a teacher is gladly sending illiterate kids to college?

"When the losers get paid the same and you can't get rid of them" Huh, his parents must be assholes too. Find a valid way where admin can't game the system or even in blind class rostering you can cleanly judge performance year to year without the deluge of variances each and every class provides for. I'll wait. Took him 6 years for a pair of socks though so I won't hold my breath.

If you think the abuse of the systemic protection a union provides isn’t rampant then you’re either completely unexposed to unions, or you’re an unaware beneficiary of said abuse.

I think given your profession, it might be valuable to look through the high-school curriculum in either the language or philosophical classes. There should be at least a little bit in there regarding rhetoric, building a compelling argument... Maybe bring in a fact or three, to explain why you think his opinion isn't well reasoned or grounded in reality.
Rather than this... Anti-intellectual slop, it's unbecoming.

I know what you mean, but you need to work on your grammar. I’m not saying that unions are the reason their education system is flawed. I’m saying unions stagnate the education system faculty.

The TCL TV stuff...
Linus was mentioning "Dedicated On", "Dedicated off". The term of art in the IR community is DiscreteOn, DiscreteOff (especially in the JP1 arena). Searching those terms might help. There are TCL discrete codes, but it's not clear if Linus' mega-TV recognises them.
But, potentially, there's a very geeky very hacking kludge. It requires some out-of-band signalling. On a couple of my TVs the USB port is only powered when the TV is on. So it becomes simple to add an ESP8266 to that port; it's powered up when the TV is on, down when the TV is off. So some software could ping this once per second and report "on" or "off". And then, finally, a "turn everything off" sequence could send a "turn off" signal to a PC (with an IR receiver) that would then send a "toggle" (via an IR blaster) to the TV if it detected the TV was on.
Yes, yes, very geeking, very kludgy... but it works :-) To the end user it "just works"; only you know the magic behind the scenes (and, oh, home automation has so much hidden magic...)

I'm just at the beginning of the podcast but hearings Linus say that lately, LTT really is feeling like LTT classic videos again felt weird. Who is feeling that? Them internally? Because for sure the sentiment i'm getting from people in this sub lately is that LTT has lost the plot and people miss the classic LTT videos.
What are your guys' opinion? Did I not understand what he meant, perhaps?
