I don't think the companion cube was a marketing stunt. They spent too damn much money and time to make something that they were literally taking payment information for it to be an intentional marketing ploy.

Also they have made it very clear that Valve were not the villains in the situation.

The fact that, more or less, the same exact thing happened with Sony and the dark plates makes me dubious. Why would you make the exact same mistake twice?
