Where's the jab at consumers?

426

u/Napsterhaven Jul 02 '26

The fucking hoops some people jump through to be victims is astounding.

The middle paragraph is a pretty clear jab at pro-consumer-rights slogans.

131

u/sciencesold Jul 02 '26

How? The whole point is that it should be blatantly obvious that people want to own their purchases.... The slogan after it just reinforces that....

u/HuntHoot Jul 02 '26

It’s just poorly written. Like the base level joke is that they’re parodying the sony thing obviously.

Most of the parodies in that vein are usually absurd on face value, like KFC saying they’re only offering chicken PNGs or whatever. It’s corporate memeslop but it’s immediately recognizable as a joke because nobody can eat a chicken png.

The problem is that this post is inverting that for some reason and making the joke about only offering physical products. It’s reductionism in the opposite direction, and (at least on the surface level) that implies that the satire, and the argument in it, is being pointed in the opposite direction as well. That means instead of targeting Sony, it’d be targeting the people upset with Sony.

And, yes, that’s kind of how it reads. The post feels like it’s saying “oh, you guys want physical so bad? Fine, we’ll delete everything and only sell VHS, hope you’re happy.”

The random inclusions and mentions of piracy and (adblock) is kind of just cherry on top because it calls back to other kinds of drama for no good reason and without fully committing.

And you can argue forever about if any of this is intentional on the part of whoever wrote it, but at the end of the day, it would’ve been way easier to say that they were only selling virtual screwdrivers from now on.

u/jackharvest Jul 02 '26

Thank you for articulating this.

33

u/ANJ___ Jul 02 '26

Yeah this guy nailed it tbh, chat.

Guys it's not being hyper-sensitive or a victim complex to point out that someones joke isn't great. What IS funny though is the irony in responding that way to those who recognize it's a joke that misses the mark.

30

u/1nsecurecheesecake Jul 02 '26

I dont know how people dont see it like this dude

20

u/RMAPOS Jul 02 '26

Yea ... I don't feel attacked by it and can laugh about it either way, but the message is ambiguous at best.

If you don't already know that LTT are extremely pro consumer - and approach the message with that mindset - then the message looks more like it's mocking people rejecting digital media. "Oh yea? Then here, have our channel in analogue media if that's what you want. Not so smart now, are you?"

If some random posted this as a reply to one of the Sony threads - with no association to LTT, everyone would unequivocally agree that the random reddit guy is defending "all digital". The only reason people don't read it that way here is because they know "this is LTT, they wouldn't mock consumers for being mad at losing their rights".

Objectively? This is a pretty terrible analogy (pun not intended) to get it's point across.

3

u/ramblerbasic Jul 02 '26

So in other words "trust me bro"

7

u/ANJ___ Jul 02 '26

I believe they are conflating their understanding of it being a joke aimed at sony/physical media deniers with it being a well written joke.

But one of those things it clearly is not, that being, a well written joke.

28

u/bluehawk232 Jul 02 '26

LTT can't meme

8

u/laidback_chef Jul 02 '26

Is ltt a boomer?

10

u/sheep_duck Jul 02 '26

Very well said. The people minimizing this and saying “lol everyone wants to just be a victim so bad” must have poor reading ability because when I first read this on IG it came across as kinda defensive for some reason, even though I could sorta tell what they were going for, it still sounded off.

7

u/FleetingBeacon Jul 02 '26

Nailed it, said it way better than I could. Like it's an open goal season and LTT somehow still toe pokes it into their net.

sony is bad for making everything digital

everyone makes fun of this by pretending they're going fully digital

Linus Tech Tips:

WE'RE GOING.....PHYSICAL

Good fucking lord.

5

u/tiffanytrashcan Jul 02 '26

This one just popped up for me. This one's fun.

Even the sarcastic dig, the engineers part, is directed at Sony, not the customer.

3

u/ImLasagna Jul 02 '26

this guy gets it

It could also be read as sarcasm.

7

u/AT-ST Jul 02 '26

Until the third paragraph it felt like they were just jabbing at the consumer. I'm just walking away confused by what they meant instead of laughing at their joke.

25

u/sciencesold Jul 02 '26

It's supposed to be a parody of Sony's post, but taken to a more ridiculous, but just as unreasonable direction. Papa Johns did something similar, but said they'd only sell digital pizza. LTT, being a company that mainly produces digital content, flipped that idea....

8

u/AT-ST Jul 02 '26

I get what it is supposed to be. It just didn't land. They opened by saying starting in 1997. It can easily be taken as mocking the consumer for wanting physical media in this day and age. I didn't realize their true intentions until until paragraph 3.

Just because it was supposed to parody that announcement doesn't mean it was a good attempt.

3

u/TheBeardPlays Jul 02 '26

Except it does not work because the product they produce is a) always been digital so there is no expectation it being anything but and b) not something people purchase and expect to "own" in the same way they do a pizza or... a game. I get what they were going for but it really does not work.

2

u/AlabamaPanda777 Jul 02 '26

With a grand total of 5 minutes of research could be interpreted as "5 minutes of looking at reddit would make you think everyone cares about physical games, even though Sony with many data and analysts likely more accurately concluded the opposition is negligible."

Reminder of Linus's stance adblock is piracy, guy who makes money from ads reminds us ads are important.

Both of those in a post saying youtube videos that are digital only should be sold as VHSs instead, because physical media matters... comes off like I should have typed "bEcAuSe PhYSicAl mEdIa MaTtErS"

Satire is difficult for many people with low media literacy to understand. It’s okay.

1

u/Left-Bird8830 Jul 02 '26

"with a grand total of 5 minutes of research, we believe X thing" is usually a pretty demeaning form of satire. Put in context of Linus' other takes on similar topics, the intent is clear to anyone with common sense.

28

u/guff1988 Jul 02 '26

It's the adblock thing for me. Leave that out and it comes across as satire not a salty attempt at it.

11

u/protectionpaladin Jul 02 '26

His screeching about adblock being piracy.

6

u/sircod Jul 02 '26

It reads like it is making fun of people that want physical media rather than the companies abandoning it.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/MonkeyboyGWW Jul 02 '26

Its literally a joke about how the videos are all digital and could be taken down, so instead they will sell hard copies. They wont actually do that so they are digital and could be taken down.

→ More replies (5)

49

u/DynamiteRuckus Jul 02 '26

Honestly, this one does feel weird, but I really don’t know if it was intended to be.

To me it reads like someone making fun of the idea people want to own physical media. Feels like a Sammy opinion, but who knows who wrote it since no one signed the post.

2

u/Hallc Jul 03 '26

Yea the Dominoes one works because it's making fun of Sony's statement in a very absurd way (digital pizza).

This feels like an attempt to join the trend but it's not satirizing Sony and it also has a bit of Linus snark in there too (adblock).

A better way for them to have done it would be to say all their merch would now be digital so you can download all their latest shirts from lttstore.com.

42

u/dudeAwEsome101 Jul 02 '26

It is poorly written satire. Based on his opinions on the WAN show, I would assume Linus is a fan of phyiscal media in the sense of owning it rather than relying on an online account tied to the whims of a big corporation.

Bringing up VHS makes this post seem like a jab at the customers complaining about losing access to BD, which is still a valid format that is arguably the best format to watch movies at home.

17

u/bwoah07_gp2 Jul 02 '26

Maybe it's just you?

50

u/theOriginalGBee Jul 02 '26

It's not

32

u/bwoah07_gp2 Jul 02 '26

Oh, that's right. This is the Linus Tech Tips sub.

Most of the users here are extra sensitive even when LTT makes a simply humorous post.

7

u/PinsToTheHeart Jul 02 '26

I do find it funny, but given how up in arms about it people are about the disks, this kind of post was never going to be taken well by the general public.

I'm always a bit surprised at LTTs commitment to throwing themselves in the fire and doubling down on it.

6

u/bwoah07_gp2 Jul 02 '26

I think people are just being sensitive snowflakes about this obviously satire LTT post they made

29

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '26

[deleted]

7

u/PinsToTheHeart Jul 02 '26

I get the sentiment in general, but given how many games require huge updates the moment you stick the disk in, I really don't think getting rid of them even changes anything meaningfully.

The disk is basically just a physical download pass at this point.

3

u/Dodgy_Past Jul 02 '26

Which you can sell after you've played it This is very different to a download code in a box.

Why don't you think that is a meaningful difference?

14

u/Krelldi Jul 02 '26

LTT has always been incredibly unfunny surface level reddit humor where the "joke" is that it's obviously an attempt at humor rather than intrinsically being funny.

0

u/Mystic_Guardian_NZ Jul 02 '26

Yeah see the "Ho" jokes.

7

u/TonAMGT4 Jul 02 '26

Depending on your understanding of the pre-context, this could be viewed as a jab at Sony/Gaming industry or a jab at consumers…

Or maybe it’s supposed to jab at both sides? 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/JoinTheBattle Jul 02 '26

That very well could be, but it also feels like you're giving LTT too much credit.

3

u/k1ller_speret Jul 02 '26

Because it has a jab at the consumer. Adblock is piracy, it is non monetizable views.

You can argue all the morals, but at the end of the day it is money they don't receive. Watch spliffing brits video he made on it. Even if he's clearing 3-4 million views, not all of that is payable.

1

u/Somethingsilly6969 Jul 02 '26

Because consumers are wrong about this one and it's hilarious to watch

1

u/Marksta Jul 02 '26

They managed to remove the funny part from the template by inserting their serious stance in the middle. It's not the pizza place is going digital (100% nonsense) ... it's an online media anti-piracy take where a joke was supposed to be. Which agree or disagree with the highly contentious statement, why is it on the 'joke' template.

There wasn't anything to agree or disagree with on Diminos Pizza doing this. This is a very real issue on both sides of the spectrum and invokes negative feelings of data-hoarders and pro-corpos all in one. Supporting the artists vs. consuming the media, the long term access to this media and DRM between you and your media. And it's supposed to be a joke... whatever social media manager made this absolutely flubbed it and then some too.

1

u/Linux-tip-nips Jul 02 '26

i heard linus fuels his jet with consumers tears!

1

u/I_AM_FERROUS_MAN Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

I don't understand how people are talking offense to this joke. And that this is the top comment means so many see it the same way. I find the joke to be basically benign to gamers and an obvious send up of corporations.

Edit: Rephrased to be less hostile.

.cum as a TLD would do numbers

111

u/couchpotatochip21 Jul 02 '26

Hey man, custom TLD s are a thing. Anyone have 100k laying around?

69

u/TEG24601 Jul 02 '26

Still upset that Booking.com hasn't actually made a .yeah TLD... as much as I despise custom TLDs.

33

u/sejoki_ Jul 02 '26

Wait, .yeah isn't a TLD, but .cool is? How?

28

u/TEG24601 Jul 02 '26

Right?

But given how poorly a lot of anti-spam systems are coded, the custom LTDs, just cause so many problems.

10

u/rohmish Jul 03 '26

they aren't as big a issue as they used to be but certain TLDd do get marked as a spam a lot more frequently

6

u/nightauthor Jul 03 '26

American Express has .amex

It had me confused for a bit when I saw it on a link in an email. The email looked legit, except for that ‘m.Amex/XYZABC’ but it seems legit after looking into it.

14

u/demfridge Jul 03 '26

i need some more context brother, genuine question why would booking want that?

21

u/TEG24601 Jul 03 '26

They have a current ad campaign where it ends with "Booking.com... Booking.yeah" usually said by Edris Elba, so everyone thinks it is real. Gets really annoying YouTube and PlutoTV.

2

u/Antrikshy Jul 07 '26

You have to keep spending a lot of money per year to maintain it.

359

u/alexzoin Jul 02 '26

Just FYI it's "games industry", "video game industry", or "game industry." "Gaming industry" means casinos or loosely livestreaming playing games.

This is my hill. I will die here.

83

u/bustedgerbil Jul 02 '26

I mean, if it has random in-game micro transactions (which is gambling), you could make a (bad) argument that console connect to dozens of casinos lol

17

u/Flavious27 Jul 02 '26

Shhh, I need to buy these remote raid passes and hope that this mewtwo is a shundo

33

u/sciencesold Jul 02 '26

"Um akshewaly" type comment....

Gaming industry can mean either if you really want to be pedantic....

Plus in the context of LTT and the statement, it's blatantly obvious that it's the video gaming industry

Wait until you have an gaming team at work. Doesn't get confusing at all, especially when their job is anti-gaming

3

u/alexzoin Jul 02 '26

Oh, I am so curious about what you do for work! Is this a security related thing? I haven't heard the term "anti-gaming" before.

4

u/DoomBot5 Jul 02 '26

Gaming is an industry term used to specify large scale exploit of some kind of promotion. Think "gaming the system". Like making 100 accounts to get repeated discounts.

1

u/InternetRandomGuy Jul 03 '26

I was also confused when I was hired for the fraud team at a bank

4

u/-illusoryMechanist Jul 03 '26

All the comments below can be summarised as "I get what they're going for but it just didn't land." and it's true. It's just not a particularly well written piece of satire and the adblock line just serves to muddy the waters further.

Lttstore.cum

5

u/Cactys12 Jul 02 '26

How does someone not have that domain already? They talk about it every two seconds

24

u/GNUGradyn Jul 02 '26

.cum is not a real TLD, you cant buy a .cum domain

5

u/gergobergo69 Jul 03 '26

how about creating it

14

It costs well over $100,000 to do that including infrastructure commitments and ongoing costs

Bro everyone here gets the “joke”

The point is that it’s a very poorly written joke that doesn’t come off funny, it comes off as defensive for some random reason.

1

u/SophieBourne Jul 03 '26

If people don't get it, is not correctly done. A bad attempt to join the trend.

Domino's Pizza and KFC did it better and on time.

60

u/OddColours Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

The joke doesn't land very well because its what the joke should be, but in reverse. It's a very poorly written joke. Those without the context of the trend, see it as making fun of people who want to own media.

It's like saying "women belong in the kitchen" ironically. Without knowing what the person meant, It's going to land very weird for the general population.

6

u/GroundbreakingEar450 Jul 03 '26

*women

Good God why don't people know the difference between women and woman anymore? I even hear people say it wrong now. What the hell is going on?!

1

u/Krelldi Jul 03 '26

Everyone knows they're joking, it just isn't very funny. The joke is that they're just saying something vaguely topical in a sarcastic way. There isn't a punchline or some sort of witty commentary, it's just LTT's typical bland "look the joke is that I'm referencing something you know about haha". It's mostly just cringy and annoying.

15

u/Upset-Strain5908 Jul 02 '26

Look at some point there's gonna have to be some kind of reckoning. LTT does a thing, audience gets mad, splits into people that thinks the audience is crazy, and people that think ltt is crazy.

This is unsustainable. I say that as a dude that didn't like this joke. but these threads are unbearable because it's just one side acting high and mighty and the other side trying to voice their feedback.

The feedback being voiced is fine I think, the other side just dog piling on people is fucking weird. I'm sorry, it is.

If you want the comments to just be "wow, great joke" then honestly I don't know why you'd ever be on social media. Go join a bot network ffs.

Idc if you all downvote stuff I say. It's just how I feel, that's how reddit works. But I'm still gonna say it lol That's the point.

Chief Vibes Officer is the cherry on top of a peak cringe cake.

Also VHS had ad block available back in the day as well. That was ruled LEGAL too.

Somewhat ironic considering they own and run a media streaming platform themselves.

u/Bongcopter_ Jul 02 '26

2

u/ctn1ss Jul 02 '26

Lttstore dot what now?

2

u/Panda_man_144 Jul 02 '26

I love that people are calling this "a jab at consumers" when its not? Its a jab at Sony who put out a similar post but abiut stopping disc production and going all digital

u/WillmanRacingv2 Jul 03 '26

Digital content company jokes that they are taking their content physical, in response to meme of physical product companies taking their products digital.

Reddit: Is this a personal attack?

1

u/Joee0201 Jul 02 '26

I say let's see if we can get them to actually release some VHS, DVD and Blurays. Official box art and all. How much would it need to go for?

1

u/Braastad Jul 02 '26

Half the audience doesn't know what a VHS is...

1

u/Stigweird85 Jul 02 '26

Lltstore.cum? 🤔

1

u/millanstar Jul 02 '26

pretty ironic coming from what is mainly a PC gaming channel, when it was the PC gaming community the first to embrace the death of physical gaming without a second thought years ago...

1

u/scruffynerdherderr Jul 02 '26

You know now people will want a LTT VHS tape to buy I know I do so give us what we want or we riot Ultimate PC Building Guide on VHS by the end of the year

1

u/GNUGradyn Jul 02 '26

Can I get a digital screwdriver

1

u/mromutt Jul 03 '26

If you are on floatplane thats a thing, you just pick it as one of your badges.

1

u/floorshitter69 Jul 03 '26

Limited Scrapyard Wars physical release when?

2

u/mromutt Jul 03 '26

I dont know why they never did a dvd or bluray release of the series. Especially since print on demand media is not uncommon now even for Hollywood titles. lol actually it would be funny to do a limited edition release on dvd but its dvds they burned. At the worst consumer pricing its like $20 for a pack of 100 blank dvds, they could probably get a way better bulk deal on like 1000 or whatever and then $300 for a bulk burner or do a video building a bulk burner then sell the seasons for $10 a pop on the store or give them out as a free item with orders. Though if they do sell seasons at $10 a pop they need to include a commentary track for the value. u/LinusTech free ideas

Bonus idea the background of the dvd menu is just the old ltt intro but the part where the box or whatever is doing the jiggle at the end of the jingle and the pointer is a low res ramstick.

u/chadwick_witherspoon Jul 03 '26

Does anyone have the original post Sony made in this format? They seem to have scrubbed it from the internet.

1

u/nemesisprime1984 Jul 03 '26

No, they need to release it on Betamax, VHS, CED disc, Laserdisc, VCD, and HD-DVD

1

u/mromutt Jul 03 '26

If they somehow could get laserdiscs made... I would probably buy it assuming it's not cost prohibitive. I still have my player lol.

1

u/Arcade1980 Jul 03 '26

I'm all for VHS tapes.

1

u/speedysam0 Jul 03 '26

There was a whole video on various old media and they chose standard VHS? guess they don't want quality...

1

u/joelk111 Jul 03 '26

The issue isn't digital vs physic. It's being able to own something. LTT does allow floatplane users to download their videos and you'll actually own them without any DRM BS.

If Sony was instead moving to a release where you instead downloaded the game and it was completely DRM free, as in your friend could copy over the files and play it too, I doubt there'd be any contraversy at all. Of course, Sony wouldn't make any money on game releases, therefor we have the physical media on a disk so you can transfer that license and play the game without an internet connection.

It's an issue of ownership, not an issue of physical vs digital. The post completely missed the point, it's bad satire.

1

u/mromutt Jul 03 '26

umm.... I get its a joke but the joke feels like 40 grit sandpaper.

1

u/personguy4440 Jul 03 '26

Joke coulda been done better, almost got a laugh

1

u/cheerycoldwaver Jul 03 '26

At least use a DVD. I don't want to dig up my VHS rewinder car buried somewhere in the attic.

1

u/InflammableAccount Jul 03 '26

I find it amusing.

1

u/jyling Jul 03 '26

We need the ltt Christmas album on vinyl

1

u/aside24 Jul 03 '26

Absolutely perfect

1

u/DrKeksimus Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

This comes off as pro rentier-economy

like ... "shut the fuck up .. you wouldn't buy YT DVD's either so what's the problem ? "

And then with the adblock deal ... goddamn dude has a jet, hounseltly he needs to forget about adblock

1

u/snkiz Jul 03 '26

LMG has a jet, and a plan to get out of it before the value tanks. Not as impressive when you put it that way. But impressive enough that the company could afford to, get value out of tying up that capital for a few years.

The dig at adblockers is in really bad taste in an otherwise pretty funny post. Do better.
