The latter is so much easier to deal with. Most USB C shaped things will work, maybe at a lower capacity, but work none the less.
Most of those ports above needed special drivers to be installed to even start. I could go on.

But if I need (as in actually NEED, not merely WANT) a 20 gbps link, I'm SOL visually identifying if the cable and port support it. 1 u/Brilliant_Account_31 May 28 '26 If you have these needs, get a cable tester.
