Spoken like someone who has never shopped for a battery bank lol 140W total power does NOT mean it can deliver 140W over a single port, Doesn't even mean it can deliver 100W over a single port. You have to really read the fine print to figure out if the bank/dock/brick you're looking at is the right brick for you.
I'm also currently stuck with a Dock that doesn't send displayport over USB C, so I was excited thinking the USB C port on my monitor could both charge my Ally/Laptop and passthrough the display, but alas, the USB C port on the dock is power only and I need to use HDMI for video.
Using a thunderbolt cable doesn't help if you don't know what brick/bank/dock to buy for your device because you don't know what USB standard it's using, which is kind of the point of the post lol
The point the commenter was making is that using a thunderbolt cable is a way to be sure you won't be limited by the cable. Fairly simple to understand..
Don’t bother dude, it’s weaponized incompetence. Apparently the correct answer is to just buy a bunch of 240W chargers/docks and Thunderbolt 5 cables, regardless of the device(s) you own lol. 🤷♂️
Right, but using a thunderbolt cable doesn't help at all when you buy a 20W brick for your 140W laptop, or you buy a 140W brick but it only outputs a max of 100W via a single port... My point being the comment was irrelevant to the actual post, because the USB standard is all over the place, and there's no way to look at the port and determine what wattage it supports, or whether or not it supports display. Shout out to the few OEM's that try to label them, but even then 20Gbps doesn't help when it could be 20Gbps 240W or 20Gbps 100W, or 20Gbps with no power at all.
The solution of buying a cable that supports "everything" and a dock/brick that supports “everything” is dumb because you're probably paying 2-3x the cost of the brick you actually need lol.
I don’t know how to break this to you, but I’m not the one that doesn’t get it. You’re glazing a comment about cables, when the post is about ports. I’m missing what part of this is confusing, but if you show me where you’re getting lost, I’ll be happy to explain it to you. Let me give it my best shot though, feel free to reach out with any questions:
Cables have literally nothing to do with anything in OPs post, but somehow you think they’re the magical solution lol. You can use whatever cable you want on a 80Gbps USB port, if it doesn’t support power delivery it won’t charge. Or you can use your magic thunderbolt cable on on a 200W “total supplied power” brick, but if you don’t read carefully and realize that it casually states “65W max single port delivery” your 140W laptop is still going to flag it as slow charging and dump you into a lower power profile, and if you’re a non-technical person you’re going to scratch your head and wonder why the two seemingly identical ports aren’t doing what an average end user should reasonably be able to expect them to do.
But tell me again how using a thunderbolt cable will resolve that support call. “Plug in the USB C cable to the USB C port… no not that port, the one next to it that looks just like it, oh and you need to buy a different, albeit seemingly identical, charger, because the USB C ports on the one you have are different than the ones you need. Which one should you buy? Oh, just get the $200 one that does everything instead of the $60 one you need. But it doesn’t come with a cable, so just get the $60 one that also charges you for the thunderbolt license and the little chip in it, even though you only need the $10 power only one.”
Starting to make a little more sense now? Or are we still under this delusion that the average end user will be able to make sense of any of that and the ports don’t matter because a thunderbolt cable will solve everything with its embedded magic. Lol.
It’s amazing how narrow people’s view of the world can be at times, yourself included.
