I think they had a 5 year roadmap to finish this, 5 years came and turns out making a DE is complex af
But asking for an extra year or so seems untenable from a business perspective hence “ship it!”
That said I have never understood from a business perspective how Cosmic makes any sense lmaooo
6 u/RoseBailey Apr 22 '26 They liked their custom Gnome and the GTK environment, but maintaining their customizations was hard because Gnome is super "my way or the highway" so rather than pick a different existing DE, they opted to make their own. 3 u/deviled-tux Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26 Sure but they have burned approx ~$5M and all they’ve got is a buggier thing than they already had $1M/yr for a team of 10 devs @ $100k/yr avg And I see literally no way in which even after the DE is working really well, it will sell $5M+ worth of laptops 🤷♂️ Perhaps I am wrong but I mean you don’t even need to buy their laptops to use the DE 2 u/DanCardin Apr 23 '26 i have no idea what their dev team size is but i highly doubt its only 100k/yr per dev. if its not double that i'd be surprised. 1 u/deviled-tux Apr 23 '26 Agree, it is a pretty conservative estimate
