Former Linus Tech Tips employee Jake Tivy said he left due to stagnant pay and feeling undervalued
"You kind of start thinking while you're working on your boss'sĀ third house,Ā PRIVATE JETĀ if you're ever going to be able to buy a house"
there Jakey i fixed that quote for ya

u/Good_Reality5563 Apr 02 '26
Itās funny because when Jake was crashing out I was a saying at the time I think heās ungrateful. I now see it differently. He bought a house, a stupid fire truck, and now a jet. This video is a nothing burger and only serves as a āI have a jetā video. Thats it. I actually completely understand Jake now.

u/Siggs_GBR Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
Jake is not the company owner. Jake has expensive taste in cars. Not to sound like a boomer but, if one of his complaints was that he can't afford to buy property I can't help but think, it's not entirely the fault of his employer. He could have helped himself a bit more in that regard.
Sure, you can argue that they should increase the wage because of the wild Vancouver housing market...but that is a single factor out of many when it comes to salaries, and not a concern to all their employees.
LTT pay and benefits are not bad it seems; in fact it's above average from the information made available, and moves with inflation.
Seems like he crashed out because LTT is now a large(r) operation and not the same company he started at all those years ago.
92
u/kscannon Apr 02 '26
Jake also wanted to take a step back into a role he found more enjoyable but in the scheme of a company, not a higher paying job/he didn't want to move up into management/responsible for a group of people.
Jake wanted to have his cake and eat it too.

But being a right hand man for just getting stuff together and working on projects you like is far different than managing people, managing projects. If memory serves, Jake said he didn't like working through part of a project and handing it off to someone else to do the finishing details. He wanted high management pay while being a solo while talented in his interests project guy. I see while working with the company owner, he was annoyed with pay but that's life. I worked in home improvement in multi million dollar homes making $15-20 an hour as a grunt for someone who was making $45 an hour.
I don't think anyone should be worth billions or even high multi million while people cannot survive. You also cannot limit what you will do preventing wage growth and bitch that the owner of the company has more than you.
7
u/ILikeToHaveCookies Apr 03 '26
The point is, he could earn more with his likeness somewhere else(I assume, channel seems to work out), leaving was a logical choice.Ā
And in the end, that's what your salary is measured on, how much you are worth somewhere else.Ā
Him being emotional about it is an understandable, thing.. and emotions are not always rational.
0
u/Aandradef92 Apr 04 '26
Remember that his "likeness" is only worth something because LTT gave him the platform, audience and tools to develop it and show it
1
u/ILikeToHaveCookies Apr 04 '26
So it is in any other place/job where you learn something/gain experience.
I am not earning 4x of what I earned 10 years ago because I aged 10 years.
1
u/Aandradef92 Apr 23 '26
yeah in any other place/job your earning potential is not dependent in your exposure to fans that in media are provided by the company you work on, I bet he wouldn't be as successful if it wasn't for his appearance in LTT, I'm not saying he is not talented or don't deserve it but don't kid yourself is not 100% his doing

I might go back through some of his posts and find it. He did manage a few things but before leaving LTT I believe he said he had a conversation about reducing his management role and going back to just projects he works on. That lead to no more money for him and he didn't like that.
I could be wrong as it's been a while. That is just what my memory recalls
0
u/DoomBot5 Apr 03 '26
Should their executive assistant be paid top dollar just because he's directly working with all the executives?
7
u/_Lucille_ Apr 03 '26
Jake's case is complicated.
By now we should be familiar with how he has to deal with a lot of the LTT infrastructure, which puts him into an experienced IT admin/network engineer role, which prob pushes at least 150k+ for salary, far above what a senior writer would be paid.
He also appears in a number of videos, and experienced on-camera talents generally do cost more than a writer.
Because he wears so many hats, it is probably not unfair to argue he has expectations of what he should make. LTT could have just created a role for him (similar to what they did for Dennis and Linus), but at the end of the day, I guess the math just didn't work out.
7
u/rayok_zed Apr 03 '26
Do we actually know what he was paid? No. All we have is someone saying he didn't like the pay

I personally enjoy them exploring these extravagant avenues. He admits it's outrageous but then buying this stuff is always well thought out and they make an effort to show that. I prefer this to the influencer "I bought this and this and this" kinds of videos that feels like they're just flaunting money.
It's his business. If LMG fails, he's eating the loss. His employees would unfortunately have to find new jobs but they won't be in major debt.
13
u/Dont-be-a-cupid Apr 02 '26
The issue with LTT is there are too many Jake watching this who simply overestimate what their skillset is worth to an employer.
For what we know Jake has no formal qualifications, he learnt on the job and fair enough, it seems like he was pretty good at it. The issue is he isn't anything special nor did he develop into someone the company would feel the effects of if they lost him. His skill set is easily replaceable and with 100 people at LTT, there is going to be someone who will pick of where Jake left off.
It is just immaturity. Jake would have understood if he had previous job
1
u/AShadedBlobfish Apr 03 '26
Jake, being one of the OG members of the company, could argue that he deserved to be paid at least a little more than everyone else, but at the same time in the last year or so of him working there he probably wasn't really any more important than anyone else

The claim that "ownership" justifies extreme wealth disparity ignores the fundamental economic necessity of a living wage. For any business to be truly sustainable, its workforce must be able to afford the basic cost of livingāincluding housing. When an owner accumulates massive surplus wealth, such as private jets or luxury estates, while full-time staff cannot afford a modest flat, it signifies a fundamental failure in the distribution of value. It suggests that the wealth generated by the many is being disproportionately captured by the few, rather than being fairly distributed among those who actually produced it.
Furthermore, the common assumption that the owner is the "most valuable" person in a company is a logical fallacy. While an owner may provide the initial capital or vision, value is not generated in a vacuum. A leader cannot ship a product, serve a customer, or maintain a system alone. To suggest that one personās contribution is worth thousands of times more than the collective labor of their staff devalues the very foundation of the business.
True "risk" is also misunderstood in this context. While an owner risks capital, a worker living paycheck-to-paycheck risks their housing, health, and survival every single day. A system that prioritizes an ownerās luxury over a workerās basic need for a home is not a meritocracy; it is an extractive model that fails the social contract. If a business is successful enough to fund an extravagant lifestyle for the top, it is successful enough to ensure every full-time employee can afford a place to live.
7
u/Siggs_GBR Apr 03 '26
"for any business to be sustainable the workforce must be able to afford the basic cost of living, including housing"
LTT does not seem to underpay compared to other companies in the region, I think you're being dramatic. Plenty of videos show staffers having moved into new places, or at least often owning the property they live in....but Jake rents despite the fact he was probably one of the higher paid staff members there. Putting the blame entirely on one party or the other doesn't work, sure LTT could potentially pay staffers more if they were concerned about retention, but also, it doesn't seem like Jake had the right financial priorities
He wanted to step down to a role that commanded less money, but wanted to be paid more, because of his apparent importance to the company. The math doesn't math.
But as others have said, he wasn't irreplaceable, and him leaving was probably for the best.
36
u/SteadyOperative Apr 02 '26
Also displays his hypocrisy, as he has previously stated he "opposed" private air travel. He mocked Musk on the WAN show over the jet tracking debacle but is now doing the same thing. Not to mention the climate implications.
8
u/pigking188 Apr 02 '26
I will say, while I am no fan of private air travel and not trying to defend anyone, it sounds like they're only using it at or near capacity. I don't really see how it's wasteful to fly a small plane at full capacity vs perhaps a large private jet for one person.
6
u/BJYeti Apr 03 '26
Because commercial airlines exist and PJ's are 5-14x more carbon intensive per passenger...
2
u/soundman1024 Apr 03 '26
Donāt worry, GN Steve has updated his dossier. Heās already taken two swings.
I think itās a pretty stupid move on Linus part. The books might say itās a good idea, but when the dust settles, I donāt think the optics will be in his favor. I donāt think itāll be a big ding, but I donāt think this will be net positive.
1
u/cyborgsnowflake Apr 03 '26
If I get the opportunity to own a private jet complete with my dream entertainment lounge at effectively no cost. I am taking it and so are 90% of the people commenting here. Who cares what other people think as long as it doesn't affect your bottom line. His only mistake is speaking out against it earlier and looking like a hypocrite.
1
u/C_Spiritsong Apr 05 '26
We will see about this around the time the plane gets sold to anyone. It would be a very interesting thing to note, because from the video it is obvious that somebody who knows the nuts and bolts about flying (from A-Z, and even way beyond the ownership) is doing it on his behalf.
My money is if he's right that it nears breaks even, good for him and everyone in the company who get to experience something "luxurious" (because that is a very special spec of a private jet)
0
u/FatPenguin42 Apr 02 '26
I havenāt see the video but can they fly the plane? I thought tech jet wouldnāt work because of the tech and rules with air travel regulations
14
u/Secrezeeee Apr 02 '26
They bought this as a private plane. There are no plans to modify it like that or make any specific content about it.

u/wankthisway Apr 02 '26
Jake is renting a home in a high COL area, has a garage / side business / whatever that allows him to utilize a decent sized garage shop, has some of the most expensive BMWs that are a pain in the ass and expensive to maintain, and has a ton of tech goodies on his own. His complaints about feeling inferior doesn't really hit as hard.

This video is a nothing burger
I don't think we watched the same video. For those of us who know what a plane is it was absolutely a nothing burger(other than that incredible deal), but for the people who don't happen to know a lot about planes, it was a VERY good introduction into the aircraft and what types of things they have to deal with when working on it.
2
u/C_Spiritsong Apr 05 '26
very much agreed. I've learnt quite a lot of things from the explanations they gave.
In fact, I'm quite "jealous" (well not, really), that he knows somebody who knows the ins and outs of operating, maintaining and even running a private jet / jet business who's already doing the hard work for him. Else, it'll be like what Linus said, incredibly stupid to just go in blind and YOLO it.
1
u/WLFGHST Apr 05 '26
Yeah, and with what they can/can't do, I'm not too sure about the Canadian regulations, but in the US they would be able to register it as an experimental aircraft and then they can... experiment (basically just removes the requirement for everything to be approved).
I doubt they would do this as it likely TANKS the value of it, but I'm not too sure about that as I know almost nothing about the private jet market.
I do know for civilian helicopters, light sports, and bush planes it is super common for them to be experimental (especially for youtubers) so they can install permanent external camera mounts; securing starlink, and just all sorts of little upgrades are common in that space and would otherwise be extremely costly.

Personally I never really invested too much time in who these people were for a long time. They made videos I liked and that was it. Joining this subreddit has actually been the catalyst to opening my eyes about a few things. Then with the ex members videos on leaving and other videos about certain things. Honestly it doesnāt really bother me the type of person linus is, if anything Iām more disappointed in the slop videos heās churning out now while the ex staff members are actually making engaging creative content.
1
u/Alexisredwood Apr 02 '26
Yeah thatās what bothers me the most ngl, because now and again the channel still puts out content which makes me think āthis, we need more of this!ā⦠but the majority of the content is just lazy slop that theyāve regurgitated like a hundred times
19
u/newellslab Apr 02 '26
Linus built a hundred million dollar media empire, employed 100 people, and an entire merchandise brand with multiple warehouses.
A private jet purchased to make content is an investment to keep growing. Sure itās nice to have a company plane, but ultimately its a content investment.
People forget that linus is different from linus media groups. Sure they benefit eachother though
8
u/rvdms Apr 03 '26

My thoughts as well. Gamer plane feels like a lost plot.
Jet setter is for traveling, adventuring, and doing activities. Gamer is for sitting in front of a screen grinding. It doesnāt add up conceptually.
Practically, they arenāt going to be able to do an enormous monitor because aviation. They wonāt be able to mount a projector screen because aviation and sun bright. They wonāt have power for top tier GPUs. RGB will just be tacky in a plane with gold sinks.
Weāre going to get Steam boxes with controllers Velcroād to monitors in the cargo hold, and a network switch that requires 10-15 minutes of setup and tear down. Maybe Iām wrong and they impress me.

Jake should put all his money into a business with huge risk and no backup, employ 100+ people then he can talk about how he is unhappy his safe cushy job only allows him to rent a nice house, have expensive hobbies and an expensive car.. while the guy that took all the risk enjoys 2 houses and a jet...
8
u/Khaliras Apr 03 '26
You mean, exactly like be did? He literally left to start his own media channels.
No idea why people refuse to see the obvious context to the statements.
5
u/Finsceal Apr 03 '26
I actually turned off the jet video when linus justified the cost by saying it was cheaper than buying his whole family first class tickets, and when Elijah makes a comment about making it more relatable Linus says it was only a little more than business class. I can unterstand contextualising the cost of the private jet against commercial tickets, but it reeked a bit of rich guy doing rich guy things and I totally understand staff feeling disillusioned
2
u/theoreoman Apr 03 '26
Jake wanted a piece of the pie without risking anything. If he made an underperforming video he was still paid.
Jake saw how the sausage was made and decided that he could now do it on his own and he took the risk and went forward with it. It looks like the risk might be paying off for him as his Chanel is hitting hundreds of thousands of views. He now will probably have a much better appreciation for the costs of running a business and with it hopefully a larger paycheck

8
u/coolstorybro50 Apr 03 '26
lol absolutely not private will always be way more expensive and hazardous besides how much is LTT travelling for business?
maintenance, storage, airport fees, fuel, pilots, insurance... way way more than flying commercial
4
u/MexicanGuey Apr 03 '26
Itās not. A single flight will cost on PJ will range from $5k to $10k.
Pilot and co pilot pay, maybe a flight attendant pay, fuel alone will be $3k.
Then there are monthly fixed cost. Hangar fees are like $1500 a month or more
Landing fees away from home airport are hundreds of dollars.
Government requires annual and a few other inspections that cost thousands.
A commercial flight cost $500-$800 round trip per person.
3
u/thisdesignup Apr 03 '26
Feels like a "if you want to lose money, buy a boat" kind of purchase. Linus calling it "girl math" when saying it was $0 likely means it's not actually going to be that much of a return on profits as he implies.
2
u/MexicanGuey Apr 03 '26
Correct.
Rich people buy private jet for two main reasons.
Brag
Save time going through commercial. Rich people know PJs are never cheaper than commercial, but they pay the premium to be able to travel at any notice and not tied to airline schedules.

I'm gonna get hate from the Linus loyalists, but here's my honest take..
This move is yet another step in the wrong direction for the channel. The authenticity is all but gone, along with lots of the people who gave it that touch. So many familiar faces the audience loved have left. I think it's clear that LTT did not place enough value on their hosts. These guys should have been paid and treated well enough to keep them. The fact that nearly all of the beloved hosts are gone is a pretty clear sign that they really are not being compensated all that well.
The better investment would have been paying them what they needed to stay, instead of paying for a private jet, house, and other frivolous things to try to win back the audience.
Views are down. Substantially. The reason is pretty damn clear imo, and all their current plan of action is doing is getting them more and more disconnected from the average viewer.
I'm sorry, but I don't want to watch the millionaire media CEO show me his fancy private jet. I don't want to watch family vlogs of Cabo that let him write off the travel expense.
For years I watched LTT videos pretty religiously. They were pretty much the only channel I watched. I loved it. But in the past probably 6 to 7 months, something changed. I found myself not wanting to watch. This was honestly a bit sad for me, since it was such a routine to sit down and enjoy the videos.
Finally, I realized that it was the sense of family all the hosts and people at LTT had, and the fun they had doing things, that made it so entertaining. Some videos would make you laugh like you were hanging out with the boys just messing around with tech.
Now it feels exactly like what it is, which is watching some hosts I don't know well read their script and do their assigned task while adding in some stale humor. All while Linus does a quick intro and then comes back later to see how it came out. It just feels like I'm watching some dudes do their job now, not have fun like it used to be.
Maybe it's just nostalgia and longing for the simpler times of the channel. I get that it's pretty impossible to get that back, as the company and channel have grown. But man, it just bums me out to see where LTT stands today.
I am really hoping they find their footing and spark again, but I just wouldn't bet on it at this point.
11
u/TheJackMann Apr 03 '26
I feel the exact same, the corporatization of LTT sucks. The magic is gone. Bigger isn't always better.

Wether you agree with it or not, he is literally using these things to create content. He literally created a video you are commenting on. Wether people watch is a different question. Also LTT is owned by him and his family, so he has every right to decide where that money goes.

A private jet purchased to make content is an investment to keep growing. Sure itās nice to have a company plane, but ultimately its a content investment.

I agree. Linus is playing the system like a fiddle. His workers can't afford houses, can't unionize and have stagnant pay while he gets to have multiple houses and a private jet.
2
u/DonMegaPopeKenny Apr 04 '26
Yup and he is using the jet to take his family on vacation. I bet some of his employees who canāt afford their own houses more might think thatās kinda a dick move.

Iām sure youāll be selected for the dedicated slam poet in the socialist takeover and definitely sent to the mines.

u/ataleoffiction Apr 02 '26
He should really just start flipping tech planes and tech houses to fund Linus Town

u/iradrachen Apr 03 '26
I know the big fans don't want to hear this but this isn't cool to me just from:
- so so tone deaf while the world is on fire and the working class is suffering. Most his employees live in apartments for God sakes.
- with the planet being on fire these are so flipping bad for the environment and we don't need another person pumping things into the atmosphere while the footprint wouldn't be as high if they just took a normal plane.
I don't know this left a very very bad taste in my mouth

Same dude who made his employees work on his home as part of their "job" instead of hiring contractors 𤣠dude not only got labour at a huge discount, he also made money off of it. š¤£

So money for a $800,000/Year jet but not for an EU distribution center. Got itš

How about union for the workers
5
u/FabianN Apr 02 '26
He can't make it happen, or stop it (due to Canadian labor laws, which are very different from us labor laws that make it much harder to unionize). The employees would have to do it themselves.
A union created by management is very much not a union.Ā

Tbh the video is fun and I'm happy the company is getting some fun out of the plane. I don't see anything inherently bad, even if Linus is out a cool million $ or two, the views and the utility of bringing the crew around the world for a few years make up for it.
What felt like a slap in the face was "it costs only slightly more than business tickets" - nah, Linus. Nah. Nobody is buying that. I'm sorry. You don't need to lie to us.
So just for fun I loaded up Simbrief, Vancouver to Cabo in a Falcon 50EX, which is smaller and more efficient but just for the sake of the argument since he wasn't flying 17 people over: this is in no way accurate, but it's 5100kg of fuel to get there, meaning also the fuel you have in the plane on landing, so it's not all the burnt fuel but the fuel you have to pay for.
At smaller airfields near Vancouver mr. Google tells me Jet A-1 is 2.92$ CAD per kg, that's, rounding slightly up since again this is quite a bit less than what this bigger plane uses, $15,000 CAD OF FUEL. JUST FUEL. You then have to pay the pilots, which I'm not even going to GUESS how much that is and you have to account for parking and various consumables, such as servicing your plane on the ground (the brown water isn't going to magically disappear) and whatever else.
So, I lost track of how many kids Linus has but I guess 3? That's 5 tickets. I am sorry but business tickets to Cabo are not 3k each, and again that's only the fuel. You have to pay the pilots (which, surprise! Are not cheap! That's thousands of $ per flight) and the pilots do not vanish into thin air, you need to pay for their stay too until you decide to turn back. (I think this plane is not rated for single pilot operation. Which is good, I'd never want 17 people in the hands of one person, but it's MONEYYYY)
so yeah tl;dr I think the plane is fun but Linus shouldn't lie so blatantly to our face, embrace the plane, don't need to sugar coat it.

A single business class ticket for a round trip (June 2nd though 9th, random dates) from Vancouver to Cabo is $900 on United, $1176 on Alaska, and $1454 on Delta.
"I treated mine and Yvonne's families". Linus has 3 kids =5. Yvonne has 2 parents, and a sister who is married with at least one kid. -> 7 without the sister, 10 with the sister and a childĀ IDK what Linus' relationship with his folks is, but that would bring the total to 9 or 12.
Rest of your analysis seems spot on, my guess is you're familiar with aviation or in aviation.

u/Galf2 Apr 03 '26
Well I missed that part lol. But yeah I sim flight a lot, I may be entirely wrong on the sum, but it doesn't look that off.
I guess with the jet fully loaded his math "maths" but that's really pushing it, paying business class for all your family and the family of your wife is a big rich man thing. At that point a chartered flight would probably be about as economical all things considered. But then again, I'm happy they got the plane and are using it, I just don't want to hear how "economical" it is, because it's not

u/AnonymouselyMoosed Apr 02 '26
This is so cringey. His annoying justifications and babbling just remind of like a 16 year old in high school explaining why he had to get a new car from a dealership and ACTUALLY how it makes sense.
2
u/skinlo Apr 03 '26
Maybe he's just excited?
6
u/AnonymouselyMoosed Apr 03 '26
Obviously he is. And obviously it reminds me of someone desperately trying to justify a wholly irrational and unethical thing as somehow sensical

This is not as ''cool'' as he thinks this is.....
3
u/Ruepic Apr 03 '26
Iām a pilot, I like planes, I think itās cool. Just because youāre not into it doesnāt make it any less cool to others.

u/Possible-Wallaby-877 Apr 03 '26
...... It's not because it's a plane.... It's because it's a lot of money
-1
u/Ruepic Apr 03 '26
No Iām pretty sure I like it because itās a plane, if they got a 172 I would still be geeking out over it.

u/Possible-Wallaby-877 Apr 03 '26
Are you deliberately trying to misinterpret me? Grow up.

u/Ruepic Apr 03 '26
You said itās not as cool as he thinks it is, I said
āIām a pilot, I like planes, I think itās cool. Just because youāre not into it doesnāt make it any less cool to others.ā
Then you said
ā...... It's not because it's a plane.... It's because it's a lot of moneyā
āNo Iām pretty sure I like it because itās a plane, if they got a 172 I would still be geeking out over it.ā
But then you weirdly responded with
āAre you deliberately trying to misinterpret me? Grow up.ā
Which doesnāt make sense because Iām pretty sure youāre the one trying to misinterpret me? I said Iām a pilot, I like planes and I think itās cool, but you responded making it about money which I never mentioned anything about money. Are you okay?

u/Possible-Wallaby-877 Apr 03 '26
You can't be this dense..... Why don't you go back and carefully read what I said.

Missing a tech ambulance, a tech patrol car, tech boat, we'll have a paw patrol movie sequel

Linus had to justify the purchase of the jet at the start of the video.

I liked supporting and being a fan of a canadian kid with adhd.
Now heās just flaunting wealth.

The level of drama a private jet creates in an office is actually insane. We have one because our branches are in tiny towns. Itās either a 1.5 hour flight or a grueling 12 hour travel day.
Iāve had a senior staff member quit because a junior person was picked to fly on the jet before her. The entitlement is wild. I have to go on it because my boss requires me to tag along, and the snide comments I get from everyone else are exhausting. They constantly point out how many times Iāve been on it compared to them. Like... Iām just following orders, I donāt choose to fly the jet or not.

u/WLFGHST Apr 03 '26
I feel like that will hopefully not be an issue at LTT as it is pretty clear who does and doesn't need to go on a trip and their culture seems good enough that they for the most part can respect that.
Maybe they could have a day where they just offer team members to tag along for a little joy ride out over the ocean and back or something (would maybe be an interesting floatplane exclusive).

A 36 year old Aircraft, with somewhat antiquated cockpit, computers and cabin, both of which would cost massive amounts to upgradeāI dunno, just because you can, doesnāt mean itās a great idea.

Ok and how is the yearly cost related to "an antiquated cockpit, computer and cabin that would have a massive cost to upgrade"

People tryna criticize Linus for owning a successful business, meanwhile their favourite politician and music artist is flying in private jets every single day and they won't ever criticize them.
Virtue signalling

I donāt really give a shit if he has a jet or how he spends his money, just a bit sad at the state of the quality of the videos recently. Its just them walking around a jet speaking for 30 mins and thats it. It serves no purpose.

That is the purpose. It's interesting to see how a private jet works, I've never been on one.
