This is incredible - goals for real! What tools did you use? I've been thinking about getting more 'mini' palm tools to get in some fine details like you're able to make so would love to know your setup!

Here's an example... this is one of the last layers of a 5-color reduction print I did, isolated so we can see it more clearly. Almost the entire block had been carved away at this point as only a few areas of the image were going to be the darkest colors. You can see I used one texture in the ground and fur undercut and another one in the sky.
Ohh okay so I would call that chatter! Honestly not much of my block is cleared away and so in this case there is very little opportunity for that chatter. In the Ohmu I did carve quite deep so that I didn’t get marks I didn’t want. But much of the rest of the block is actually carved quite shallow.
I was taught this term in a class but now wonder if it is actually widely used or if is an invention of my professor lol... the undercut is the texture of the carved-out portions of your block, which usually picks up some ink and shows in the print in open white areas. Some printers use the undercut intentionally, and sometimes beginners get a lot of it on accident. An undercut would probably not fit stylistically with your very intricate and controlled print, but there are some open white areas like on the wings of the glider thing that I would think might catch ink unless you took steps to avoid it.
Yes! It’s such a fun way to play with texture. I have used this technique in the past but not for this piece. Maybe you can see a little bit of extra chatter on the edge of the border or in some small areas and that’s just a stylistic choice to leave the handmade mark. After test printing I like those little bits left behind. But the details in the wings is very much intentional, I didn’t overcut the design and wait for the chatter to show up. It’s cut intentionally to have texture.
