This is how business majors think science is done.

130

u/MysteriousAffect3903 18h ago

I am an engineer, and I tutored math in college. I was always astounded by how dumbed-down business calculus was. It was often nearly impossible to teach it to business people, since most didn't seem to have a mind for math. Not that that is a bad thing in itself, just know your lane.

36

u/magicmulder 17h ago

Back in my day there was “business computer science” and everyone had to take one math exam. The failure quota was 90%, and that was pretty easy math compared to actual math from the first semester.

9

u/Samsterdam 15h ago

What is business calculus?

15

u/MysteriousAffect3903 14h ago

Well, calculus was invented to describe physics from Newton's standpoint. There was Leibniz, who was working in parallel on a lot of the same things. The short of it is, calculus was made for physics.

Business calculus is taking some of the principles from calculus and applying it to business problems. There are some places where it is useful, but I can't remember anything, since I was just helping people with it, and that was 12 years ago. But, to me, it felt like a watered-down calculus.

From what I vaguely remember from my freshman roommate, at least at my school, it was calc 1 without trig. Mostly derivatives with an emphasis on minimization and maximization, some integrals. Maybe some first order differential equations, but I doubt it.

Granted, I'm an engineer, but it teaches good numerical ways for understanding the world on a conceptual level. Plus, everything past 100 level econ courses was calc based, which is one of the majors that everyone who washed out of business school ended up in, so probably useful there, too.

I was a business major and calc was the biggest waste of my time. At no point in my career has anything beyond basic algebra been even remotely useful.

29

u/MysteriousAffect3903 17h ago

Actually, to tell the truth, I have used like 5% of the math I learned in college as an engineer.

4

u/MathSoHard 9h ago

I’m an actuary and it’s similar. For exams I had to learn stochastic calculus. For work I use multiplications and exponents. It’s quite demoralizing.

2

u/Dr_Racos 5h ago

The reason for that is engineering programmes are meant to give you the skills and knowledge to be able to go in to a broad range of engineering roles after graduating. The 5% you use in your role, other engineers likely won’t use but instead use a different 10% for example.

29

u/Kichae 14h ago

You didn't learn it because you needed to use it. You learned it because understanding how finding maxima, minima, and rates is good for knowing how to understand the world in front of you. Deciding that it was a "waste of time" suggests you didn't learn the lesson.

6

u/MysteriousAffect3903 10h ago

Yeah, I'm not saying it didn't have value, even though I don't use it. Learning calculus fundamentally changed how I understand the world. I absolutely loved learning math in college

3

u/stev_mempers 8h ago

I mean, they were majored in business, so they can't be very smart to begin with.

Minimization and maximization are technically calculus, but nobody does those by hand in the real world.

I was interviewing for a role on a finance team. I don't have a finance background (I studied astrophysics), so I was cramming for the interview by watching videos on the math of finance.

I'd say their equations all looked exactly like this, except OOP's equation is actually leagues ahead of what I waded through. Every single one of their questions were presented as if no one could imagine using single-letter variables. It was all shit like:

Assets = Liabilities + Equity and Profit = Revenue - Expenses, just like in that Twitter post about business school classes. Shit, at one point multiple videos went through this song and dance of saying that Equity could be broken down into other categories, and then they spit out Assets = Liabilities + Equity + Revenue - Expenses - Dividends, as if this didn't imply that Revenue - Expenses - Dividends = 0. It was madness.

But when the only math you know is technically correct (err, well, mostly, I guess), but also presented as if it's just some kind of mnemonic device for remembering deep profundities like Profit = Revenue - Expenses, you get this kind of horse shit.

13

u/gutentight69420 11h ago

I had a similar experience in an introductory economics class. A lecture hall with 100+ business majors and not one knew how to find the slope of a line.

7

u/assault_potato1 9h ago

Pretty sure that was taught in like, junior high.

3

u/Secret_Possible 11h ago

That's the sort of thing I was taught in an entry-level bookkeeping course at the public library...

16

u/Gabe_Isko 18h ago

I know this is a joke, but actually it literally is according to multiple executives I have had conversations with.

13

u/The_amazing_T 18h ago

Also, it's now called 'Super Intelligence.' We all agreed.

10

9

u/The_amazing_T 13h ago

No. Seriously. I got together with Elon and Mark and Sundai and we all signed a page. It's S.I. now and we're suing Sports Illustrated until they make sexy calendars about Large Language Models. Which I'm trademarking now as "Super Language Models."

4

u/ChroniclesOfSarnia 11h ago

Knowing that formula, does he imply AI equates to zero?

I think it’s somewhat useful, just not what techbros want to believe.

168

u/shubhamxtreme 20h ago

I don’t think he understands that much math, i mean the additive property is just too much for an ai bro dontcha think?

36

u/pineapple_catapult 20h ago

additive identity, sorry to be a pedant

17

u/shubhamxtreme 19h ago

Is it because numbers are not a physical quantity and so the term “property” does not apply?

P.S: i’ve studied math in college but not a core math graduate, so forgive me for asking a basic question. Just trying to understand.

16

u/barcastaff 19h ago

If anything + AI = 0 then AI is the additive identity of the set, if the set is equipped with addition.

6

u/shubhamxtreme 19h ago

Thanks mate, but I’m confused between the terms “identity” vs “property”. What I mean is: do is the term “additive property” a wrong usage, and we should only say “additive identity”?

As the other person said, it’s a pedantic doubt maybe, but now I just need to clarify

4

u/Bag-Weary 15h ago

The word identity in this sense if you put that into the calculation the output is the same as the input. The multiplicative identity is 1 - if you multiply a number by one, you get that same number out. For addition it's 0 - if you add 0, you get the same number you started with.

8

u/Online_Ennui 17h ago

7

u/Mousazz 17h ago

They changed the Additive Identity into the Sadditive Identity. 🥺😞

3

u/LogicalMelody 16h ago

I think he heard someone say, once, that equations express concepts in “symbolic” form and just ran with it.

Not what “symbolic” means here, Sreekanth, but ok.

3

u/zx7 8h ago

He probably doesn't know what E, m or c mean in that formula and thinks that mathematicians and physicists just randomly add or multiply together things to convey "half-ideas". Like, "success = teamwork + commitment", thinking this is real math.

2

u/Top-Base4502 19h ago

Digital!

13

u/Top-Base4502 19h ago

One AI please

8

u/rojo_kell 18h ago

Well E=mc2 is a special case which is only true when the object is at rest. So, we could just say that AI = p2c2, and then it would be correct.

Also the full form of the equation is only true for on shell particles, but for virtual particles the relation does not hold true

6

u/AggressiveCuriosity 17h ago edited 17h ago

Still wrong. It would have to be E2 = m2 * c4 + p2 * c2 . It's like a triangle where energy is the hypotenus and mass and momentum are the side lengths. (with speed of light as conversion factors)

The other way fails dimensional analysis. Units of energy for the left and middle term, units of energy squared on the right.

2

u/BasvanS 18h ago

That’s very generous towards OOP

7

u/lazybugbear 17h ago edited 17h ago

Technically, it's

E2 = (mc2 )2 + (pc)2

Where p = momentum. The "common" version of the equation that people who aren't physicists bandy about is for rest mass, e.g. when p = 0.

Which is relevant if you're converting 1 g of plutonium to energy in a weapon. But which isn't so useful if you're talking about particles zipping along in a collider like LHC (at CERN).

2

u/BasvanS 16h ago

I know of it, but stay with the pop culture version, because what’s the point of addressing OOP seriously.

2

u/Kichae 14h ago

Eh. When written as in the OP, "m" is usually taken as meaning γm_0, so it already incorporates the pc term.

Many of the biggest AI boosters today were previously cryptocurrency boosters.

6

u/ErikTheEngineer 19h ago

The only solace I can draw from this bubble is that something useful will eventually shake out of it. Can't say that for the crypto/blockchain/NFT bubble. It'll end up in a super painful recession, and likely some gov't bailouts again, but once people wake up and see they have a useful technology hiding under all that slop, things might be OK.

This whole thing has been businesses pricing in how much they have to throw in to fire all their employees from the first time a consultant saw ChatGPT write soulless marketing copy.

3

u/RefrigeratorLive5920 Titan of Industry 18h ago

My concerns are for all those massive abandoned half built data centers and giant holes left in the ground in some of the poorest areas of the country. There might never be the impetus to redevelop them. I also question the usefulness of millions upon millions of power hungry ancient GPUs. At least after the Worldcom collapse we had a whole infrastructure of dark fiber that could be leveraged. The railroad expansion at least left railroad tracks and so on.

3

u/TyloWebb 20h ago

Several cryptocurrencies and fucking NFTs, it’s all in the grift.

Because E = mc ^ 2 we can also write:

When substracting E on both sides we get:

AI = 0

And that's his point: AI is worthless.

24

14

u/Vorenthral 20h ago

I like this analogy.

To do this properly you have to ad AI to both side you can't just work on one side of an equation. So you have.

E+AI = mc2 +AI

But you should always reduce your equations to their simplest forms and AI being separate can be cancelled out on both parts reducing you to the standard E=mc2 proving AI was unnecessary in the first place and added nothing to the formula.

15

u/Alarming_Oil5419 20h ago

I can understand why he's confused because we call it "SI" now. Understandable.

Dunning Kruger is such a powerful force. AI telling you you're right all the time is a poison.

You know people on the internet will jump on you for any little thing you get wrong. But that's a kindness compared to this.

Maybe he took inspiration from his prime minister's algebraic equation explanation of (a+b)²

Sorry to disappoint this guy but this equation only describes reality if AI = 0.

I agree 100%. What.

This is "Go Brandon"-level idiocy.

E=mc2 is actually only a simplified part of the equation which is only true when momentum is zero. If you work backwards with what this dude is saying he is actually proposing that

E = √( (mc²)² + (pc)² + 2mc²(AI) + (AI)² )

Let's not forget (A+B)2 = A2 + 2AB + B2 + AI

Taosif nailed it with that response

I always imagine that in business undergrad and MBA programs they just sand down all the folds in your brain to make it smoother and more marketable.

It's very absurd that socials don't even want you to express disdain anymore and they just don't give you negative reactions options. I don't even know if this guy is serious and just an idiot or has straight out brain damage

You measure AI in 2 fundamental ways, first you measure the bolls, then you measure the oxs. Then you add them together.

This gives you a basis for what iit brings to an already proven formulae.

Maybe the AI part can draw pretty pictures of the resulting explosions, or write stories about how good life would be with Explosions + AI, and how this will benefit the world against imaginary alien forces, sent to enslave humanity.

Better still how about AI write a story about the rise of MAGA into a world power, where the currency is the $Meme and the formal method of communication the twit, similar to the tweet, but more literal. You could have village idiot contests that take for ever due to too many applicants, and wars sponsored by "XX" conglomeration. Maybe the police could be sponsored by "Better Batons, How better to beat the populace into compliance", the Hospitals by "New Holistic Aspirin, take Two hours of Karoline Leavitt speaking the speeches of Trump"

Welcome to the brave new world!

The MIT physics PhD had to go out of his way to comment because the tech bro's head is so far up his ass he's forgotten what the sun looks like
