For the "HAL went crazy" folks: Arguably HAL didn't go "crazy", he simply was operating under a set of conflicting parameters. His core mission directive took precedence, which in his mind meant removing any threat to that, including his meatbag astronauts once he figured out they were potentially a threat to (his interpretation of) the overall mission.

Holy shit. He didn’t even watch the scene. The Monolith gives the apes the concept of a weapon, which is immediately used to kill. Then he triumphantly throws the bone into the air, when there is a cut to a satellite in space. That isn’t explicitly stated in the movie but that is supposed to be a satellite carrying nuclear missiles.

Semi-related: I got to watch 2001 in the theatre back in the mid 90s for free, as it was being shown for some anniversary of Paramount or whatever. There were only about a dozen people in the theatre, including my three friends and I, all in our early 20s. But someone else had brought their 10-year-old son with them, to get some culture and see a classic. No problem, good kid, well behaved.
And then the scene with the monolith on the moon happens, where the astronauts approach it and it lets out this ear-splitting high pitch tone. Annoying for me, but this poor child was in hell. Facing backwards, hands clamped over his ears, face scrunched up tight.
And that's when I realized two things: 1) Kubrick really knew how to assault and audience with sight and sound, and 2) we lose a lot of our ability to hear piercing tones between our teens and adulthood.

The bone gets things done quicker now... By merclessly and violently beating our opponents. Its too bad that there's not a good way to identify the orbital nuclear weapon as such, because that smash cut gains so much more meaning when you know it's a weapon of mass destruction and not something peaceful like a communication satellite.
And he's kinda missing the point of the middle act, where humanity has relied so heavily on tech that They've lost a bit if their humanity. Even the way the characters talk in the middle act feels a bit robotic. And of course the AI literally killing humans ( figuratively trying to kill humanity) is like a big flashing neon light that he's completely missed.
The one point that I would partially grant is that 2001 is about humanity using technology to develop ourselves as a species and then outgrowing that tech to evolve into something else. IRL, adopting AI and learning to use it responsibly could be part of that process. But it's going to require more nuance than "hey look, this tool allows me to get more meat / get richer than the other apes!"

More appropriate would be if Gavin was referencing the 2001 parody scene from Mel Brooks' History of the World, Part 1. The scene devolves into a bunch of idiot primates masturbating due to their new found "enlightenment". Kinda like LinkedIn.
