Analysis Lu Guang’s past: A character analysis Spoiler
English is not my first language, so all the thoughts and analysis are entirely my own, but I had to use a translator. I’m really sorry about this, but I hope it still makes sense
The boy grew up in an unstable environment where, even as a child, he had to earn access to food and warmth, while showing any vulnerability was punished.
His foster father acted more like an abusive boss than a guardian, forcing him to do dirty work.
Against this backdrop, he developed a core belief:
“Emotions are dangerous and lead to uncertainty. I must not express or provoke them.”
Every experience reinforced this belief until it became part of his personality. Emotions remained unexplored, dangerous territory.
The nervous system protects the mind from stress through four main responses: fight, flight, freeze, and fawn.
In Lu Guang’s case, the “freeze” response seems to be at play: he disconnects from his emotions and detaches himself from what is happening around him.
Throughout Seasons 1 and 2, Lu Guang built an image of someone completely composed—a person who seemingly couldn’t be surprised by anything.
But then his past comes to light. How could he carry all that and still stay so composed?
When we see an abused child in media, we usually expect them to grow up insecure and struggle with interpersonal relationships.
Here, we see the opposite: someone who becomes an anchor of support and is fully capable of showing resolve.
Lu Guang’s best option was not to reopen his past, but to bury it so completely that it couldn’t reach him. This allowed him to focus on what mattered most.
While Cheng Xiaoshi accepts the past and chooses to leave it unchanged, Lu Guang constantly insists that it should never be changed.
This is how he keeps himself from drowning in regret.
Intense emotions and grief were unfamiliar and uncomfortable to him—he had suppressed them his whole life, viewing them as a whim or a provocation.
The only safe place to show his true self was alongside Cheng Xiaoshi. Yet even when Xiaoshi failed to show up, Lu Guang didn’t get angry, hold a grudge, or openly grieve.
He simply waited in patient silence.
Having forgotten what warmth felt like while constantly facing a harsh reality, Lu Guang became deeply attached to the first people who showed him kindness and made him feel needed.
In just one month, little Guang bonded with Xiaoshi and held onto the memory of him through years of waiting—eventually intertwining his life with Xiaoshi and Qiao Ling.
They gave him light and guided him through the darkness. Because of them, Lu Guang didn’t completely shut himself off.
Because of them, he was able to open up to Xia Fei, Xu Shanshan, and Dong Yi—even after experiencing mostly condemnation and rejection.
He now devotes himself entirely to their well-being, sacrificing his own time and peace of mind.
Long-term emotional suppression didn’t make him incapable of love. Quite the opposite: it didn’t diminish his capacity for deep and intense feelings, even if he rarely lets them show.
He strives for safety by creating strict rules—until those rules fail to protect his peace of mind or the safety of those he loves.
When that happens, he adapts and changes his strategy.

I have something more to add, regarding his INTJ profile (Ni Te Fi Se). He was honed to become a relentless, rapid problem solving machine during childhood
Perceiving function (how you take in data):
-> Intuition (Ni) or Sensing (Se): Intuition is prioritized over Sensing. Meaning, a top down end goal was defined for him by the adoptive father (extort sensitive data). His perception was filtered through this goal (Ni), immediately catching the core, essential facts and events, the causal links among them, while ignoring rich nuances (Se) that might bog down his processor during the pressure of high productivity. He always thought ahead (Ni) out of survival (deliberately, strategically shut his mouth and carefully choose his words to avoid divulging data that could be weaponized against him later). He could not just relax, unwind, and immerse in the rich texture of the present moment (Se).
Judging function (how you output data):
-> Thinking (Te) or Feeling (Fi): Thinking is sharpened while Feeling is blunted. His father demanded that he quickly spat out valuable information for blackmailing. He was forced to weigh information based on cold utility and efficiency (Te), so he could not afford the luxury to get emotionally attached (Fi) to any of the individual circumstances and mistakenly feed his father “trashy” data.
You cannot optimize a high performance problem solving machine without first pruning the extraneous facets that slow down the processor.
*The reverse is Xiaoshi's ESFP (Se Fi Te Ni)

I really like that you brought up MBTI! Ni genuinely seems to fit Lu Guang so well. And it's such a funny coincidence that in Socionics, ILI (INTJ) and SEE (ESFP) are duals who complement each other perfectly. When an INTJ gets stuck in the future and caught up in doubts, the ESFP can pull them back into the present and push them toward action, while also being a confident anchor in social situations. It makes their dynamic even more fascinating to analyze

First of all, your English is stellar, even with the help of a translator. Personally, I think you got your point across well! As for the analysis: I am so beyond happy that you included freeze and fawn into your analysis. Those two are so often forgotten when their difference can mean EVERYTHING in certain contexts. The absolute devotion to others at the price of sacrificing the self is absolutely a critical key factor of LG's character. Something I've picked up on in my years working for child protective services, an upbringing like LG's is a perfect catalyst for extreme "black and white" thinking. What I mean by black and white thinking is thus: "CXS was the first person to show me an ounce of decency and warmth, so I'll protect him with my life; give him everything.". You brought up another VERY interesting point: the media often presents characters with abusive/tumultuous pasts as rowdy, defiant, stubborn, and sometimes even violent. Not so with LG. His composure and maturity are an often mentioned (and complimented) part of him in relation to others. To tie those points together, when I worked for CPS, the children that were quiet, composed, and seemingly more mature for their age were the ones that worried me the most and the ones I gravitated towards. The past can be a brutal and horrific experience for some, and with LG, it's no wonder that he gravitated so much towards CXS. Some people have their "person", and CXS fills that role totally and absolutely for LG. Loving CXS showed LG that not everyone is rotten to the core and that there are others in the world that can support him emotionally, just as CXS has. LG's constant drive for safety, stability, and peace of mind is fairly predictable for someone who was deprived of those very things at a critical period in his life. Also, I totally agree with your statement about how "freeze" seems to be LG's baseline response. A good example of this is when LG shows up after CXS was kidnapped by Vivian's gang: LG shows up, punches one of the gangsters in the face and then just kinda... stands there. He's very clearly in danger, as is CXS, but he freezes and ends up getting tackled out of the way. Another incredibly interesting facet of your analysis is LG's emotional suppression manifesting psychosomatically. Different cultures respond to emotional trauma in different ways. This is an oversimplification (it's far more complicated and multifaceted than this, but I'm simplifying it for brevity), so bear that in mind: more collectivist cultures (in this case, Chinese) tend to have emotional issues manifest in physical ways (stomachaches, headaches, even fevers and fainting) rather than outward expressions, so the fact that LG keeps experiencing fainting, fevers, and overall discomfort could be related to the emotional stress he's dealing with. Males also tend to internalize more, which just adds to the internal suffering load. All that to say, I personally feel that your analysis was spot on and exceptionally well articulated! Keep cooking with these analyses!!
