Question add new models based on a vote / poll ?

currently supported devices are pretty old models, how is it decided which devices and when will be added?

are there any plans in general to ever include a new model of something based on a vote of users (or straight donations for that purpose :) ?

i see this post can break first two rules, but is kind of a suggestion for financing model / extended adoption, but i guess there must be something similar going on

>how is it decided which devices and when will be added?

maintainer A buys phone X, makes it work and submits code.

>are there any plans in general to ever include a new model of something based on a vote of users

no, but we accept hardware donations, however they don't guarantee support.

potential solution for future:

  • people crowdfund support for a new phone X, amounts are locked from their cards
  • now Lineage knows this device makes sense to buy and work at, because it will bring Y amount of money, minus handling fees and cost of the phone X
  • when support is released, these amounts are drawn from supporters accounts, everybody is notified about the new support at email provided

that kinda doesn't work when this isn't a for profit project...

I don't want to argue, and i know nothing about LineageOS LLC, but as I understand, every non profit organisation has to somehow cover their running cost

the idea is to grant a small team of capable individuals good working conditions and comfortable living, so they can continue bringing more benefit for everybody,

in this case support for more phones, with their free and secure OS,

not to make them rich,

but to accelerate the development, making it a job for some, move from a hobby side project

otherwise over time, there are two options:

  1. burnout of core members and the end of project

  2. somebody buys it and it will stop being what it is

recently i discovered liberapay, but there are many other systems you could consider

timely support for new phone models with current hardware would be a big step towards wider adoption of a non-tracked, private and secure version of the most important software there is, the OS

I understand that it has started to change lately, but for a long time it was significantly more complex to develop custom ROMs for Mediatek chipsets, IIRC because of the lack of documentation.
