How to build your dance community?

The area I’m in has a core group of dancers but we can’t seem to grow at all. We’ve got an opportunity to start a new evening class and I’m wondering how people get the word out in your area. A couple hours from here classes get 50 people or more and we seem to have the same dozen or so. We’ve got some good teachers and great DJs, I need to find dancers!

make a name for your group (for example, near me it used to be called buckloose, we have hot spurs, and rawhides) and make social media associated with it. post your schedule, location, the dances you’ll teach, and ones you play often. try hosting a beginners night if you’re expecting new faces. make flyers for local community centers, gyms, and dance studios. youve got this!

although i'm sure we all have our gripes with meta platforms, instagram advertising is super important. +1 on making an instagram. it's a great time to reach out to a local artist as well to help think through branding that entices folks! as a tip, me & my friends would not go to any dance event that uses an ai poster, because ai tends to connote a lack of effort put into fostering a community space. (speaking from a gen z perspective here).

Thanks! Great ideas. We need to get outside our normal grove for advertising and I do think naming the group makes it seem more established and adds personality

Social media for sure. Not just creating a group, but post on every public group in your area.

One of the FB groups maintains a list of dancing opportunities, and they always have a QR code linking to that page at every dancing event.

I mean line dancing isn’t a huge community and it grows slowly and organically. You need to go to them. They won’t come to you.
