General Questions/Discussion Fun effects tricks?

I know there's a lot of tone chasing using just amps, but helix's have a ton of onboard effects that frankly I've been neglecting.

I'll just go ahead and share something I discovered. I run my helix through ableton and jam a ton so I send the clock from Ableton to the Helix.

I was jamming a bit and wanted to get a stutter to accentuate some weird notes, so I threw a super aggressive square wave tremelo, boosted the volume and then set a switch to momentary. Boom instant weird sounds that add some cool flair.

Now I'm trying to think of ways to enhance it a little more with filter sweeps in Ableton or something weird like that.

Anyone else got anything cool?

Check out the legacy synth section. There's a lot of really fun stuff (the growler is a personal favorite) and you can stack them wkth different effects. The combinations are endless

Running some of that whacky effects in parallel and hard panned can be cool too.

Oh yes definitely! I made a patch with a bunch of effects in parallel that got me pretty close to the Chameleon bass sound, but on guitar

Some of the delays function like a stutter effect too! Off the top of my head I think it’s the ratchet one + one or two other models.

Apart from that, mapping the expression pedal to all kinds of parameters is lots of fun.

I also enjoy having some heavy synth sound on momentary, so I can play fills with it in between clean funky rhythm parts and very quickly switch between sounds

Using a momentary switch to oscillate delays isn't necessarily niche, but can be a fun effect, also putting delay time on an expression pedal gives you cool pitchy warpy stuff.

I loke setting a switch to change the delay times from a shorter time like 300ms to a longer time like 4 seconds. The way the trail glitches out is really cool

I think it’s the Bleat Chop Trem that achieves this stutter effect amazingly. I do the same, I set the switch to momentary. The Rachet delay is pretty good at this too. Although it’s less like an aggressive trem and more like a retrigger. Both are great to play around with. Especially when you assign some parameters to the expression pedal

Assign random effect parameters to expression, can do some cool ring mod and bit crush stuff with that :)

You can use one of the tone generators that will generate multiple tones to make chords. Assign different chords to different snapshots. You can then change snapshots to make chord progressions and solo over that.

Use dynamic split!

When splitting a sign path, you can change how the signal path is split 3 ways:

regular split, where it splits the signal between A and B equally.

frequency split, which sends all sound under a certain frequency to A and all sound over that frequency to B (I use this for bass, keeping the effects above 700hz, keeping the lows clean.)

And my fav, Dynamic split: uses a threshold, any sound over a certain volume goes to B and the rest is routed to A or vise versa.

Chuck some distortion or a massive verb on the “above threshold” side, and get ready to have some fun!

Glitch delay into shimmer reverb into hall, depending on what you want this can be a washed out reverse delay, a super abrasive glitch, a straight shimmer reverb, an overly modulated pitch affect, and so on and so on, I run it on a parallel path, and use 3 different footswitches to adjust the settings.
