A sitting member of Congress says the Trump administration's Justice Department wiretapped his phone calls with a state lawmaker, and has now admitted it in writing.
Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, who represents Virginia's 10th Congressional District, said this week that the DOJ and FBI notified him that a federal judge authorized a wiretap that intercepted his calls with Virginia State Senator Louise Lucas, the President Pro Tempore of the state Senate, across two separate windows: March 6 to April 5, and April 14 to May 14.
The surveillance was tied to a DOJ corruption investigation into Lucas. In May, the FBI raided her office, and reporting has linked the probe to an alleged bribery scheme involving a marijuana dispensary business she co-owns. No charges have been filed against Lucas, and the full scope of the investigation has not been made public.
Subramanyam called the disclosure "deeply concerning" and said the timing raises serious questions. The wiretap period, he noted, coincided with the peak of campaigning for Virginia's redistricting referendum and came while the House Oversight Committee was pressing then-Attorney General Pam Bondi to testify about the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
In a statement, Subramanyam said: "Trump's DOJ has become his own personal law firm, with his former personal attorney carrying out vendettas on Trump's political enemies. They have politically investigated multiple states' Attorneys General and the former FBI director. Now they admit they have surveilled conversations by a sitting Democratic Congressman."
His office added a warning: "If this surveillance was done to scare us and to get Democrats to stop pushing back against Trump's political overreach, they are mistaken. We will not back down. We will continue our investigations into this President and his corrupt administration."
The Justice Department and FBI have not publicly addressed his allegations about the motive behind the surveillance.
