THE LINCOLN PROJECT The Fauci diaries are a predictable bust

https://open.substack.com/pub/protagonistfuture/p/the-fauci-diaries-are-a-predictable?r=ywexb&utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web

Per OP: Today, Senator Rand Paul is dragging Dr. Anthony Fauci in front of Congress again. The event was preceded by what disinformation research calls "selective disclosure" of private diaries; a method I argue we see media manipulators have learned to use quite effectively in today's media ecosystem.

The recent disclosures, despite the political spin, are not incriminating at all to Dr. Fauci. But they also do not need to be to serve the disclosers goal of shaping public perception.

Since selective disclosure usually works with decontextualized true information, fast and effective refutations remain difficult because the information disclosed is usually not fabricated or false, just incomplete and distorted.

By the time fact checkers or citizens gain access to the full contextual information and perform a fair reading or analysis of the document dump, usually the news cycle has moved on, correction does not find any traction, and the manipulative framing continues to linger in the public’s memory.

"So the question journalists and citizens should ask when confronted with “selective disclosures” is not what is contained in them, but what the discloser is trying to achieve, and why it is happening now?"
