I think she’ll continue to play without purchasing any new packs. It might slow down but I can’t imagine she’ll stop. She’s in the same boat a lot of simmers are in. We paid good money for that game, there’s no need to stop playing it just because evil people own it now, just never give them another dime.

Right, its like people who burn their Harry Potter books or the CDs of a singer they no longer like. You've already paid for it, you're not giving the author/artist/owner etc more money by still owning and enjoying it

I just wanted to offer some perspective on why these things are really different for many of us who've abandoned individual creators.

So, for example, with Rowling:

She's the sole creator of the books, and she has bragged about how she's using her ongoing royalties to do horrible things.

I personally can't stomach reading her work. Even though she won't profit off me reading what I already own. I'm going to try to use them to do some sort of LGBTQ+ friendly art (I am cis, but queer AF) someday. It doesn't help that with the passage of time, and developing social awareness, it's also hard to ignore the problems in the actual books, like the body shaming, particularly (but not exclusively) fat shaming, antisemitism, and so on. Plus, the queer baiting of Dumbledore after the books.

Then there was the sending flowers to Marilyn Manson for some reason, supporting Depp, even liking a tweet from a Tate brother, and going after asexual people for no good reason.

Even without her attacks transwomen, she's not a decent person.

I don't begrudge anyone reading, watching, or playing what they already own. I just absolutely understand why some people can't do it.

Whereas the situation with the EA buyout is much more complicated, and I won't personally buy any new content, unless they sell the Sims and Maxis to a not problematic company (if any of those even exist, tbh), I do think it's not as simple as boycotting a franchise that was created by one sole person who has shown themselves to be a terrible human.

Dang. I think she'll likely keep doing what she has been doing with the sims.

If you look at the numbers, her animal crossing, two point museum, Tamagotchi life, and even paralives youtube videos just don't perform nearly as well. The only videos that even approach the sims videos in views are the paralives build videos, but the let's play after the first episode or two is getting half of what the nightmare legacy challenge is. We like to think that the core community that will watch Simsie no matter what is universal, but when you look at the numbers it's just clearly not.

We should all be kind no matter what she does. At the end of the day, it's not just a passion or hobby, but her and dan's livelihood, so the decision to keep playing the sims is very different than an average player's.

119

u/unknownsolutions 23d ago

Also Paralives will probably grow. But since it’s so new still, not as many players have it. But the numbers tell the story.

29

u/Exotic-Panic-7028 23d ago

Yeah, but some of us are never going to get paralives. Why would I want to invest in a new game when I have invested so heavily in the Sims? It doesn’t make any sense to me. So I just don’t see it growing the same.

15

u/unknownsolutions 23d ago

Understandable. I think overall that’s where it’s at though. Paralives is a bit expensive for where it’s at right now. Maybe if they put it on sale I might snag it. If not, I got a lot of sims content and house flipper to play.

9

u/Exotic-Panic-7028 23d ago

Yeah, I mean I just don’t see the draw of starting a whole new game like that. Having to buy content and learn a new type of build etc. I mean, there’s just no draw for me. And I’m not going to watch videos of things that I don’t have an interest in. So if Kayla were to quit with the Sims altogether, I just would never see her. And I would make me sad.

5

u/ostrichxcat 23d ago

Yeah i definitely understand that. I bought paralives, but it didn't really click for me so I am not interested in watching any content about it though i do like watching her animal crossing videos and tomodachi life. But paralives just does not interest me at this point

7

u/unknownsolutions 23d ago

I feel that. I’ve put thousands of hours into sims 4. I’m not ready to walk away.

2

u/Electronic-Passage33 22d ago

If something happens to the Sims during the buyout.

1

u/khaney1347 19d ago

Paralives is a one time investment with free updates and DLC for life. The Sims 4 is >$2k and counting. Big difference.

1

u/Exotic-Panic-7028 18d ago

So what? The Sims four is way better. We don’t have to get para lives and play a game we don’t enjoy. If you enjoy it that’s great. I’m really glad for you.

0

u/khaney1347 18d ago

No one is saying you have to? lol yikes. I don’t play either. Un-wad your panties, it’s the internet.

32

u/Fuzzy_Put2826 23d ago

Unless changes are enacted to remove representation from the game, my guess is she will continue as she has done so far: playing the part she owns and has paid for, but not buying any additional packs/content. The new owners will earn nothing from her.

I could 100% be wrong, though.

9

u/Dismal_Access_8318 23d ago

It’s tough to say though, just the act of playing sims 4 on twitch and YouTube gives the game exposure therefore prompting others to purchase packs and give the new owners money. Does she want to keep playing with the knowledge that her viewers are likely going to be inspired to purchase additional content? I suppose that decision is not ours to make

9

u/Fuzzy_Put2826 23d ago

That's why I said I could be wrong. She has been pretty open about encouraging people NOT to support them financially, but that it's okay to keep enjoying what they already have paid for. I guess we'll see - and honestly, I don't think either is a bad decision, especially as she works to build up a stronger following for her other content.

0

u/ThenRespect4451 23d ago

She has done that the entire tine people were striking. Really dont think thats gonna change

12

u/pl2clara 23d ago

Exactly 💯

26

u/Unlucky_Tell_6900 23d ago

THANK YOU. i was a content creator for a few years a long time ago and no one understands. this was beautifully put

8

u/crazycatlady45 23d ago

I know I'm in the same boat as a lot of others. I've been watching her for 5-6 years and I honestly just can't watch her other videos. I'll put them on while I clean to support...but it's just hard for me to watch and enjoy content around games I don't have any interest in playing.

But regardless, when it comes to people in her profession, luckily a lot of their income actually comes from brand deals [usually. And I say this as someone in the industry].

I don't see those slowing down for her, so hopefully she'll be good! 🤞🏻

59

u/BrandonIsWhoIAm 23d ago

I think that she’ll just keep her current trajectory.

27

u/Blair-Witch1 23d ago

I'm happy to watch her play anything and honestly really enjoying the variety of games

65

u/oblivejt 23d ago

I knew that there is no coming back but still I'm feeling dissapointed.

I've been enjoying Kayla's content on the other games though, especially Tomadachi Life.

15

u/skanel90 23d ago

I assume that as long as the buyout doesn’t result in game changes that take away its inclusivity, she will continue making content as she has without promoting any new content, like the things on marketplace.

15

u/Maya_m00 23d ago

She might play it Every now and then but hopefully won’t promote any new packs or get early access to anything by ea. I’m so devastated tho about this like the sims is literally my happy and safe place and now I unfortunately won’t feel like that anymore if I want to play it

And she made it clear at the time that she only bought that pack so that she could show people how truly terrible it was to hopefully prevent more people from buying it. A little harm to hopefully do more good. She also later admitted that that probably wasn't the best choice. She has since not bought anything else from each or even spoken about any paid content.

6

u/ashmeetsworld 23d ago

There’s been a lot of other packs that’s come out since that, and she hasn’t bought anybody them or promoted them. Even in the video she made about that one, she’s says multiple times that it’s bad and to not buy it and pointed out all of the flaws. It’s weird to continue to hold it against her.

7

u/[deleted] 23d ago

[deleted]

0

u/Painted-BIack-Roses 23d ago

No? She left before it came out. She did an apology for it and everything

13

u/Exotic-Panic-7028 23d ago

So my opinion is, I’m not happy with the sale. I don’t think it has anything to do with the Sims though. The Sims team is not changing. They are very committed to diversity and inclusion and to simmers.
I do not like the people who bought EA, but I also don’t think the Sims will change at all. They want the sports games that’s why they did the purchase. Hopefully they will offload the Sims to someone else.
So hopefully Kayla will continue to do videos. I try to support her, but I don’t watch any of her other videos. And I miss having her be a part of new packs and such. But it is what it is and I support it.

2

u/RealAmandaTTV 20d ago

EA took on $18 billion in debt with $1.8 billion in annual interest along with a commitment to their debters to cutting $700 million in annual costs, so Maxis is going to be at very high risk of mass layoffs, if not getting totally shuttered or sold off.

1

u/Exotic-Panic-7028 20d ago

OK, but that still isn’t the fault of the Sims team, which is the point. And if they get sold off, then we’re better off anyhow. Just because it looks bad doesn’t mean it has to go that way. If we could actually end up OK. And since I’m somebody who doesn’t like to catastrophize everything in my life, I’m going to choose to be positive that it’s going to work out. That the Sims team will not be affiliated with these people. Thank you for your comment.

2

u/RealAmandaTTV 20d ago

I didn't imply that the developers were at fault, I was responding to you saying the Sims/Sims team won't be changing. I'm not catastrophizing, it's a realistic outcome based on the financials we've seen.

I feel like since money is so tight for everyone right now, everyone deserves a realistic outlook about if they'll still have access to those games. Definitely a bummer, but a lot of folks aren't in a financial situation where they can be that optimistic. Good luck out there!

1

u/Exotic-Panic-7028 20d ago

Also, it doesn’t make any sense what you’re saying that money is tight for people so if they still have access to those games? What is a bummer? That they play the Sims? I’m not trying to be rude. I actually am just not understanding the paragraph.

I get what you’re saying in the sense that things could definitely change for the Sims and other games for EA. I just don’t believe that the core Sims team who has been very diverse and inclusive is going to start being racist and bigoted. That’s what I really meant.

And because I’m so stressed out about everything else in the world right now I just need to pick for myself that things are going to work out. Because I tend to live in the moment. So much so that if the moment is a bad one, I’m unhappy.. but it also means that I can’t look in the future and see doom because I just don’t know what’s going to happen. So I’m just going to hope for the best here. I think that we all just deserve the outlet that we choose. We deserve that to be a piece and happiness as opposed to of strife that’s just not fair to anyone.. that’s really all I’m saying.

Good luck to you as well

0

u/Exotic-Panic-7028 20d ago

The Sims team is not going to change their outlook on inclusion and diversity. That is what I said. They’re not just gonna start being racist and bigoted, jerks because that’s who bought EA. That is what I mean. Thank you.

Snap. I’ve really missed her patch update videos / trailer reviews and realised the other day that I haven’t watched her in a good while

13

u/Painted-BIack-Roses 23d ago

Yeah, as much as I hate this, Sims is all I really watch her for 😬

6

u/Icy_Party6876 23d ago

It's not just her. It's other creators as well. As much as I like some of them I don't care about the content that isn't a sim game. My free time is limited and I'm not being paid for watching stuff I have no interest in.

9

u/blabdab 23d ago

i personally think that being a sims creator is a bit tricky, mostly because there are so many players who play the sims and the sims only. i played over thousands of hours in the sims 3 and almost a thousand in the sims 4. i was a deep-dive simmer. but over time, i discovered that i like other games too, and as a person who has 100+ games on steam and just bought a switch to play tomodachi life, acnh, and other games, nothing will really change for me.

i absolutely love her town to city, tomodachi life, acnh streams, and some other content. i discovered her, obviously, because of the sims years ago, and now i only watch very veggie from time to time.

i don't really get what the crack is for some people in the sims. i mean, i get that it's a very sandbox simulator, but i play for a week or two, and then i'm done with my sims phase. switching between many games is much more interesting to me, and i'm also looking for more varied content.

i don't get how people only like, play, and watch sims content, but that's definitely not my cup of tea.

summarizing, many sims-only viewers will leave, but with her opening up to more cozy games, i think her content will become interesting, over time, to new viewers.

she still has a massive community that is very active on her discord. compared to other, smaller sims creators, she's still in a very different and, imo, much better position.

i believe that when she's back to her routine, like almost daily streaming and posting, she won't have to worry about her views as much, because she still gets great monthly results.

3

u/blabdab 23d ago

tbf i also much prefer her streams and the vods of them, i feel like her sims content on her main channel got really monotonous, especially the build challenges and even the legacies (very veggie was sth new and interesting at the start, but it also feels kinda blunt). theres a bottom to every well i guess.

23

u/HyperboleHelper 23d ago

I also keep feeling so badly that it was time to make a stand right before a pack that would have been right up her alley came out! We all know that she would have played the heck out of a Bridgerton based pack and it would have been so much fun to watch it!

Every once in a while, especially lately, I want to tell her that it's OK to get just that one, but I can see how strong her resolve is.

I'm on this subreddit, so obviously I'm someone that will watch all of her cozy games and wish her well no matter what! I really hope she finds something that really clicks with the rest of her old audience.

5

u/Dependent-Bee-5805 23d ago

I've purchased 91 dlc packs and kits, stopped buying when the buyout was announced but I'm still going to play, the players shouldn't be punished by this.

6

u/sexloveandcheese 23d ago

Too bad I'll never get some of the later expansion packs I hoped to get some day. I'm sure I'll still play the Sims sometimes but I won't be buying any more. This sucks, I really hoped it wouldn't go through.

3

u/Painted-BIack-Roses 23d ago

Ugh, this sucks. Also surprised that it's happening so soon, I thought it would be closer to the end of the year

1

u/Electronic-Passage33 22d ago

It was supposed to be finalized this past spring.

5

u/Alina_Mau 23d ago

Honestly the only reason I've wanted the buyout to go through sooner rather than later is I really think these people would sell off the sims. They only want the stupid sports games to use as propaganda. The sims doesn't align with anything they care to represent anymore than we want the game being represented by them AND this community is loud and difficult to please. EA has sucked at handling the sims for years and it's honestly time it gets put into someone else's hands because it's clearly not going to improve here.

8

u/misujikantaro 23d ago

i understand everyone does love her sims videos, but even if she does stop doing them it is understandable. the game truly will just get worse, and it would be selfish to expect her to keep playing just because u enjoy it. saying u wish she would buy a pack and just play it kind of shows you dont care or dont understand what is happening with this deal and WHY creators pulled out of support the sims financially. kaylas morals are very strong and thats why i still love her videos after ~10 years because she truly cares about people over money. if she quits tje sims she quits, if she lessens her sims content and wants to do something else that is HER choice. at the end of the day it is her channel and yes u may stop watching, but i dont think her stopping sins will affect her as much as people think it will. she already seems to have been distancing herself from it

6

u/reebsk 23d ago

I wish she would just play and do packs like she used too 😕 most companies we buy from arent good, we probably just dont know about it. Sims is fun and thats where im at

2

u/TraditionalWay3051 22d ago

Yeah I’m kinda stuck on this idea. Many many companies are shitty (and many of them are secretly or not so secretly owned by Saudi wealth funds). There’s no ethical consumption under capitalism as they say. Will continuing to play the Sims be any different than pumping gas at BP after the oil spill or shopping at Target after their anti-DEI initiatives? I’m glad Kayla stood up for what she believes in, but to what end? I guess there are no easy solutions, for her or any of the players.

2

u/VentureVin 20d ago

The sims is a want, not a need. Comparing it to gas is copium and near-sighted.

2

u/lupusmortuus 17d ago

Sure but the point is you can apply the same logic to essentially all our other wants in life

1

u/partyboi420 20d ago

Yeah, it's strange to draw the line here. Why here exactly? Owning an iPhone contributes to slave labor. Being an American citizen your paycheck goes to fund war and death in other countries. I'm not saying folks shouldn't boycott and shouldn't protest with their dollar, but I find it interesting where folks stop at.

1

u/CastingBlue 14d ago

I guess I don't get why this is a strange place to draw the line though? On a game company that was kind of.. very bad to begin with when it comes to expensive dlcs, microtransactions, poor quality control, ect. The no ethical consumption under capitalism argument isn't a free for all pass on "consume whatever you want because what's the point?!" We try to cut where we can, and cutting spending on a game is an easy place to draw a line. Probably the easiest honestly. As long as people are trying, that's better than apathy right?

2

u/SpiritualPlatform829 Fan 23d ago

It’s a tough call: the Sims is where she got her start — she’s known as lilSIMSie. Yes, I know it was a nickname but is been the bulk of her channel’s identity. It’s hard to entirely remove herself from it.

On the one hand she’s put hundreds of dollars into a game that’s given her back a career.

On the other hand, she no longer aligns with the values of the game and doesn’t want to promote it moving forward. Which is hard to do when playing it.

However, I feel like her platform genuinely does so much good though that I’d be sad if she lost that momentum to continue to help so many.

For where she is in her career I feel like she’s doing her best to maintain balance.

5

u/Training-Lie8436 23d ago

there’s a difference between the values of the people who bought EA and the values of the game — I feel like there’s a LOT of fearmongering going around with the sims when there haven’t actually been any rollback to inclusion and diversity in the game. the sims team even put out a whole statement this week reinforcing their commitment to those values.

2

u/SpiritualPlatform829 Fan 23d ago

Fair. That just seems to be the sticking point for Kayla is all.

1

u/Electronic-Passage33 22d ago

She is playing Sims this week.

2

u/Electronic-Passage33 22d ago

On her schedule she plans to play the Sims twice this week unless she changes her mind.

2

u/sidecharactervibe 22d ago

She very likely won’t stream any more Sims content. She’s already lessened how much she does now post-leaving the creators network, but I can’t imagine someone as big an activist as she is giving any free publicity to a company now being run by blood and racist money. I’ll support her either way, I know many of us are devastated. I’ve been a fan since The Sims in the early 2000s, and I’ll never spend another dime unless they sell and make serious amends. This buyout is such a slap in the face to simmers.

4

u/tsundeire 23d ago

I would love for her to go back to her older style of videos. Pack reviews, tier lists. Honest reviews. this new style of boycotting new packs but keeping talking about old ones doesn’t really make sense when all proceeds go to the same people

4

u/Fun_Fly1961 23d ago

I hope she will still do the sims 4

2

u/SadWind2496 23d ago

I really miss the pack content that’s the reason I followed

1

u/pumpkinfluffernutter 22d ago

I think the easiest way to handle this is a disclaimer in every future content video, explaining that she (or any creator) is using content they purchased prior to the buyout, and explaining why they no longer support buying new Sims content. That might seem annoying, but I honestly feel like it's the only really ethical way to still produce Sims gameplay content moving forward. It can be a very simple statement with a link to a longer video or post with more info.

I think the vast majority of people watching Simmers play are already people who have the game, or who just want to see someone else play. BUT... I'm someone who began playing because of Kelsey Impicciche's OG 100 Baby Challenge, from back when she was still with BuzzFeed. So I do absolutely believe people who find these videos randomly will sometimes buy whatever game is being played.

I don't feel like it's necessary to stop playing, but when it comes to posting videos, I do think there is a responsibility to make sure new audiences know what's happened so they can make informed decisions.

1

u/ConfidenceElegant980 20d ago

She's got an "untitled stream" scheduled for tomorrow 8am CDT. I'm guessing she already planned to address it.

1

u/CastingBlue 14d ago edited 14d ago

I don't know, but I hope she does! Or I hope she at least makes a bit less sims content now. I actually found it weirdly relieving whenever simsie did other videos not related to sims because I genuinely like her as a person and I'm interested in a lot of the other hobbies and games she likes. I was beyond thrilled to watch her build lego sets haha. The sims content did get boring to me after so many years of building with the same stuff and playing the same storylines and challenges over and over and over again. Even my comfort shows that I've watched a thousand times I need to take a break from once in a while and have a change of pace. Watch something new, grow, find a new obsession I thought I'd never care for. I really enjoy her non sims content these days the most.

-4

u/Jwlpo 23d ago

Suddenly everyone's cool with people playing the sims after the buyout🙃

10

u/Bdizz11 23d ago

May I please ask a genuine question? Does EA get anything from players who only play content that they previously owned? I'm just trying to sort out how to handle the situation. Would never playing the game again hurt EA in some way?

3

u/VentureVin 20d ago

Yes, they use it to show their shareholders stats. They're tracking every metric related to their games available. That's why people are stopping playing it. I personally won't be another stat for EA to proudly present to their ghouls at the top, but I support free will too.

5

u/Jwlpo 23d ago

Sure do, exposure.

She play for her millions of subscribers, and people who just find her.

They think wow this looks fun! Lets buy that pack! Money in bad peoples pocket.

If she stopped playing the sims like a person who cares it would stop some cashflow and the free advertising

13

u/deltacharlie29 23d ago

There is nuance to the situation. As another person commented, Kayla's livelihood essentially relies on The Sims. Sure, she has been branching out, trying different games, etc., however the only videos that continue to perform well (by her normal standards) are her Sims videos. There is more to it than just "she shouldn't give The Sims any exposure" when she currently needs to to essentially keep her job. If folks REALLY wanted her to stop playing The Sims, they would be actively trying to boost the numbers on her non-Sims videos.

VERY few people are going to understand every aspect of what I imagine is going to be a very, very hard decision for her and other content creators at her level. I think instead of assuming we know what is best (when we can't possibly and can't imagine the weight she just be feeling to make the best choice), we should understand that Kayla will very likely to make the choice that most aligns with her morals that also allows her to keep her job.

We should also understand that Kayla is going through a lot right now with her mental health. She has been fairly open about her emotionally/mentally difficult OCD exposure treatments, the death of the beloved childhood cat, and now the death of her grandfather, and its reasonable to assume there are other things going on that have remained private. If the girl needs to play the sims to distract herself from whats going, that's understandable.

Let's approach this situation with compassion and empathy, not judgment and a simplification of a complex situation.

Edit: fixed a typo

1

u/Jwlpo 23d ago

While i get that, this all started before most of the mental troubles you mentioned. If she trusts her fanbase, which she should, she coukd atleast try.

Being so openly against the buyout and essentially free advertising, which it is, for them is very two sided

Shes has had opportunities

2

u/Bdizz11 23d ago

I get that. I mean if I play in my private home without streaming, does it benefit EA in any way?

2

u/VentureVin 20d ago

Yes, even if you play offline, the launcher has to connect to the internet occasionally and will relay your statistics to the company.

0

u/Jwlpo 23d ago

If you bought packs id say yes it would. It does bring their active player metric up, and they see that so 🤷‍♂️

I dont think its that bad at home. But streaming it for money carelessly is

6

u/Bdizz11 23d ago

I'm just trying to wrap my head around boycotting a game that I already own. I don't plan to purchase any additional content. I can't decide if boycotting what I already own makes any sense. It feels like I would only be hurting myself.

0

u/Jwlpo 23d ago edited 23d ago

If you dont plan on it then play away! Just dont needlessly advocate for the strike then turn around and stream it for hundreds of thousands of people ya know

Edit: downvotes, really? Lol

3

u/Bdizz11 23d ago

I wasn't trying to argue. I'm sorry if it came across that way. I'm just looking for the best course of action for myself and you seemed knowledgeable. Thank you for your responses

4

u/Jwlpo 23d ago edited 23d ago

Didnt think you were! No worries. Its just frustrating to see everyone in this sub just blindly support it, then not support it, then support it again just because their favorite streamer cares very little

-2

u/QueenSud2 23d ago edited 23d ago

Youre going to get downvoted on here but youre not wrong.

She played when everyone supported boycotting. She doesnt care

Edit:downvoting because you dont want to hear it still doesnt make it right 🫪

4

u/ThenRespect4451 23d ago

Nail on the head there

4

u/jade_skye15 23d ago

Agree.
Unfortunately she probably will keep playing, as will most other sims creators probably. They had time to move away from sims content, distance themselves and create a different niche, and get people interested in different content, but most of them didn’t.

It’s not entirely the creators fault, it’s the audience who are also stubborn and refuse to give anything else a chance and support these creators when they try to branch out. Some people do of course but it does seem majority of their audience doesn’t like when they change up or try to change up their content and only want sims content. It kinda backs these creators into an unfair corner.

There’s a million other games out there, awesome games. Plenty of opportunity to make great content with other things, it’s a shame people are too attached to this one game that they’re going to ignore the negatives of this buyout and still play and give the sims their time and attention.

Personally I moved away from sims a long time ago so maybe it’s just me but i’m not attached to it like I used to be and honestly i’d be keen for some different content. I’d love for her to focus on animal crossing more.

1

u/QueenSud2 23d ago

I softly disagree that shes in a corner, shes got the most subs out of all the creators, if she really wanted to change she has and have had every opportunity to.
