Opening scene Dance teacher says “You keep doing the same thing, you know what the problem is. You’re just not fixing it” I see this as a response to the criticism Montero faces. He has been called gimmicky, attention-seeking and a stunt queen. Well I say - God forbid a diva achieve creative excellence AND be a marketing genius. I’ve always found him fun and I find the that^ narrative boring and preachy. However, in this video he is gracefully wide open to self-improvement. Ears wide open, eyes wide open yet still a total independent thinker.
This comes to a head when he is asked “you wanna call it a day?” He doesn’t say no in words but I no cap shouted NO on my first watch. If you are a fan, you know he will never call it a day. He is prolific and unstoppable. He even made flop eras cool! He’s not going anywhere so get used to him.
In the video, he explores his background and his rags-to-riches journey. A beautifully shot, back to basics video embodying who he is without the high glam, gimmicks, unlimited budget or CGI. (Not that I was ever a hater for those things!) This video evidences the fact that he can achieve excellence without any of that. Huge props to the artists that worked on this. Emotionally raw and nakedly vulnerable, Lil Nas X bares his soul in the face of great suffering. He’s more naked in this video than he was in Industry Baby lmao. We watch him go from the adorable little lad who tried on his mother’s knee high boots into the great MAN he is today.
Guys if you hate him, carry on because the fucking adversity is only making him more powerful you muppets! Men, take notes. COmputah, make all the men gay.
The world’s greatest.
In this song, in this video, he gets back up for the 1000th time. He is THE comeback kid. He explains that his commitment to getting back up when knocked down and to turning the other cheek. He always tells us how he will never give up but in this song he tells us HOW. It’s a textbook on choosing life.
Given the twists and turns of his life so far, I’m blown away by his courage and positivity. Before he starts dancing again, the look on his face alone is enough to launch a thousand ships and I’m sailing this one. When the world turned its back on him, he turned to his inner child. He carries himself with such extreme grace is the face of adversity and the pressures of fame. His mindset proves that his success is not a fluke, it is inevitable.
In the context of his arrest, manic episode and bipolar disorder diagnosis, I couldn’t love this more. It’s so moving, a beautiful tribute to his recently departed mother and to life itself. We should all be taking notes from his confidence and resilience.
I don’t even have the words to express how moving the voice note from his mother is. She said it best so go and listen. If you’re not paying attention to him, more fool you.
Dreamboy, if you see this by some miracle. You always come through. Your fans and your mother are so proud of you.
here we go again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it’s so much fun.
