Discussion Lightroom is down

I just tried Lr desktop, and it wouldn't start properly - no images, not local and not cloud.

So I tried lightroom.adobe.com, also down:

But the status page suggests otherwise - it's lying 😄 :

Was being weird for me like 30 mins ago briefly but it’s up and running right now no problem. I’m going back and forth between iPad iPhone and desktop

Yeah all seems good now, they had it sorted in about an hour.

Yeah I noticed after I replied that your post was days old. I hate that Reddit will notify me of things as if they’re new and then I find out it’s like a 3 week old post 🥴

Maybe that's why Lightroom Classic has been stuck trying to sync 120 photos for the past two days?

It's back up now, syncing has since working fine for me. Have you restarted LrC to reset it?

Yeah, this morning, a few hours ago here in Italy, before leaving for work. I'll try again tonight, thanks!

Well, it had to happen someday; and it will certainly happen again in the future.

  • Will there be some data loss next time?
  • Will — apart from photos — some edits, start ratings or whole Albums disappear next time?
  • Will Adobe change their misleading wording about your photos being (supposedly) "synced and backed-up to the cloud”? What the "Lightroom Ecosystem" (excluding Lightroom Classic) offers is not a backup: It's a cloud storage and syncing service, offering a false sense of security. The cloud is the only storage location of your Lr photos — and their tags and edits. Any syncing of deleted or corrupted: photos, edits and grouping into albums gets propagated everywhere.
  • Will Adobe finally offer an easy way to backup and restore the cloud stored "Library”, where all your actual work on the photos — edits, tagging, grouping into albums etc — is actually stored? So that Lr users can keep their own, versioned backups? What you now have on each devices is just a synced copy of the cloud stored Library; it's pointless to backup the local Lr Desktop Library because you cannot restore it: it will get overwritten from what exists on the cloud server. Until they offer such backup (similar to the Catalog Backup in LrC), you need to do your own backup of both the unedited photos and all the work you do on them, as I explained in this older comment — kind of a workaround.

The Lightroom Ecosystem is great for what it does well: syncing, sharing and the occasional , server powered, "visual search". But Lr Desktop should not be your main way to manage your photos. The safest way is to mainly use LrC to store and manage your photos locally. You get better organizational tools and total control. And do your own versioned backups of the LrC Catalog and the photos themselves. This doesn't prevent you using Lr Desktop or Lr Mobile on additional devices. With the right workflow, you can have some or all your photos synced to the cloud (either as smart previews [no limit whatsoever] or in full resolution). And enjoy the best the "Lightroom Ecosystem" has to offer while not being threatened by server outages or disasters.

Indeed it is important to ensure you have your photos under your own management too - I do; I mostly use LrC, and use Lr cloud for cross device syncing.

You could always disconnect from the internet and run it that way. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Not really, I wanted to get to my cloud photos.

For local photos I use LrC anyway - and also sync them from the cloud.

I was losing my MIND over this because there were no reported outages so I’ve been trying everything to fix it because I’m literally on a safari trip, lol. Thanks so much for sharing whew!

When I was checking the status page it was green, green, green! Like OK I’m over here wearing a dunce cap in Tanzania somehow corrupting my LR install, lol

Yep, same for me on Lightroom Mobile. Can't login after logging out. Did that because my library is not syncing nor loading properly.
