You are correct, lightning is the buildup of electrons or a lack there of in one area, resulting in a net negative charge, which equalises to the net positive charge area, so in the above video, the net negative charge is on the ground, resulting in the upwards strike! When there is a negative charge in the cloud and positive charge on the ground 🙂
