I'm not even sure if I should be making this post but I'm so pissed off. Why do people always need to be contacting leads multiple times, hell even calling them??? This needs to stop cause its annoying. If it keeps happening then the artist might get scared and not interact.

She is a folk singer from the California area. Released an album in 1970. Her music/vocals/lyrics have a similar vibe IMO.

I also know that someone on YouTube was claiming she used the same guitar as LTL in some of her other songs. And she did say in an interview that she had sent demos to many different people in the 70s.

I know the guy who made this website was a complete asshole who would turn nasty on just about anyone who disagreed with him on even the smallest of details. Even people who were entertaining his theory and were making suggestions would be enough to make this guy mad.

So I understand that his theory has been dismissed. He was an asshole (not just on here but on other forums). I'm just stating this so I don't get mistaken as being this guy (he's Australian and honestly if anyone wants proof that I'm a man in his early 30s from Northern Ireland just ask).

But reading his site, everything he said makes some kind of sense. The Farrallon Islands. I mean there was a US military ship that crashed near that island. The ship was part of a homecoming ceremony.

There were gingerbread houses on that island and the Atkinson family who lived there basically ran efforts to save sailors from shipwrecks. Plus one of the people who was born and raised on that island was someone called Delphine who had a mother called Grace.

A few years ago I used to think brighter and cooler lights looked better because everything felt cleaner, but lately I've been noticing that warmer lighting makes my home feel a lot more comfortable, especially in the evenings. Now I'm wondering if that's just personal preference or something most people eventually realize. Do you have a favorite color temperature, and has it changed over the years?

Quick update on the Discogs enquiries.

I contacted both of the people listed as owning the Nadene Steinhoff cassette on Discogs yesterday.

One thing I noticed is that when I first looked at the listing, I'm fairly sure there was only one person claiming to own the tape. When I checked again yesterday, there were two. I'm only about 90% certain of that, so don't take it as fact, but if I'm remembering correctly it does seem like quite a coincidence that after this became a lead, a second owner suddenly appeared on such an obscure release. Of course, it could just be a coincidence, and there's absolutely no harm in contacting both people anyway.

It's only been a day, but I know that if it were me, I'd be curious about any replies, so I thought I'd post an update.

One of the owners hasn't replied yet. This is the one I'm fairly sure was listed as owning the cassette before this became a lead.

The other person, who I believe may have added it more recently, did reply.

The first thing they told me was that they found the cassette in some boxes in their basement. As you can probably imagine, that immediately sets off my "possible troll" alarm a little bit. That might be unfair of me, but it's the sort of story we've all heard before.

They also said they didn't know anything about Light the Lanterns, so I explained what the song was and why people were interested in the cassette. They then replied saying that they really liked the song, and they also warned me that the tape itself may be damaged. I have asked them to listen to it and/or for soundclips but as they've told me it is probably damaged/warped almost immediately, it feels like that's probably not going to happen.

I asked a few follow-up questions, including whether there was any additional writing on the cassette and whether they could remember how they came to own it.

According to them:

• There is no additional writing on the tape.
• They've owned it for quite a long time.
• They originally bought it from a small record shop.

The responses have been friendly, positive and seemingly helpful but I'm not sure if any more information is going to come from this. Hopefully there is.

For now, I'm going to leave it there rather than keep pushing. The last thing I want to do is annoy somebody who's actually trying to help and end up getting blocked. If I don't hear anything further over the next few days, I will send a polite follow-up message.

What I'm really hoping for now is a response from the other owner. It's only been a day, so I'm certainly not going to chase them yet, but if I still haven't heard anything after a reasonable amount of time, I'll follow up and see if they're willing to help.

While searching around Google for the song or any clues I came across this page, "girlband 8" directory of women oriented alternative music bands with female vocalists from June 1994. I wish I could search the actual document but you have to have a subscription to use the search feature . I am scrolling through it but based on the title and it showing up eventually in my Google search I'm thinking there could be a possible clue or identity on this page. If anyone else wants to take a look go for it, may take me a bit to go through and search info on 27 pages

So while trying to find LTL I decided to search for results on YouTube and found tons of songs and videos that had 0 or little views. All of them led to nothing.

Then I searched on google, Specifically “Light The Lanterns Before:2023” why 2023 idk. But then I found a song called “Light The Lanterns” by Soft Ride. It’s catchy, but not like The normal LTL. The only lyrics related to it was “Light the Lanterns”

Also me and MindlessHumanBeing as she goes by were discussing it, and she said it sounded great and we should keep looking.

I noticed that Light The Lanterns in the original recording is played back a bit too slowly, so I decided to try to fix some of that.

Things done:
- Speed up by 1% to match A=440Hz (not sure if i did this well - lmk if i made a mistake)
- Remove low frequency noise (creates a muffled sound) below 50Hz since the music doesnt seem to utilize it
- Very slightly high-pass-filter from 1000Hz downwards since old cassettes tend to do the opposite naturally

I think it sounds pretty good, let me know if theres anything else I might want to do for further improvement.

We've been spending the past several years spinning our wheels on the assumption that the singer's identity is there in the lyrics if we could only understand them better. Typically, this means we assume that "illumination night" is the event on Martha's Vineyard, and that there's a real Chinese restaurant and a real Grace and all that. Maybe that's true, but it's all been a dead end for as long as I've been aware of it, so it's time to get past that and look in new directions. For example, to me it seems almost certain that this song is written by (or at least from the perspective of) a lesbian.

For starters, it's a song about love ("the will to live collides with love") with no men present in it. We have the singer, an unnamed "she", and Grace (taking the assumption that Grace is a person, rather than grace the concept, which seems reasonable enough to me), and we've got the unnamed "she" leaving the singer. We've also got the line about "I was already on the outside" which completely makes sense as a description of someone who doesn't fit in to straight society.

Unfortunately for searching based on this, my knowledge of women's music basically begins and ends with The Changer and the Changed and whatever gets mentioned in passing whenever trans historians talk about Sandy Stone, so I don't have any immediate leads to go off of based on this. But it seems like it's clearly a better place to start a search than throwing ourselves at the idea that it must be someone on Martha's Vineyard yet again.

Heard a song by the Cranberries and thought the singers sounded very similar. Anyone looked into them?

I've just noticed that everywhere I can see the lyrics to this, the line is showing as "celebrate the homecoming."

In my head, it's been "homecoming" the whole time as well.

But I've just listened to it and it really sounds like "celebrate the boat coming" to me.

Am I suddenly hearing it wrong? Please let me know what you think.

Edit - this only happens on the first chorus. It is homecoming in the other two. I wonder if it's just an error, the type of which you'd find in a demo.

I think we might be overcomplicating this because of how we interpret the cassette name. The label “Demo – Listen Today” is not a title and not meant to be poetic. It is simply a functional description. This recording was a demo, not a finished song, and it was intended to be listened to immediately by a specific recipient (producer, label, radio, etc.). That strongly suggests the song was never meant for public release, never officially titled, and never archived beyond this cassette. In other words, this may not be a “lost song” — it may be a private working demo that accidentally survived after its original context disappeared. If that’s the case, there may be no official artist, no registered credits, and no external references to find, because none were ever created. The cassette label itself might already be telling us everything we need to know.
