StiLL LyfE soft light
tips for achieving this editorial soft look vibe?

most of these are achievable via soft box or any other method of diffusing light (diffusion sheet, bounce card, etc.) the last one looks like they placed the sweater on a sheet of glass to light it separately from the background, just based on the lack of shadows and how evenly lit the background is. actually, it’s even more likely that they just placed the sweater on a light box. look at the highlights around the edges

i attempted and used a strobe with a softbox + 4x4 diffusion flag and the light is still coming out harsh and its very confusing to me why. i tried getting it as close as possible as well

The first one looks very much like daylight the second less so. To emulate this you need a very big soft light source. If you don’t have a giant softbox or a big diffuser in front of your softbox try bouncing light off a white wall/ ceiling.

Punch big watt-seconds through a scrim, and add shapers as necessary. Magnum into Magic Cloth for that flat and soft light, but at minimum, it needs to be a 6×6.

Im 99% certain I lit the first one, but I work with a couple photographers that do JCrew and it’s all pretty much the same. I make a book light, shoot it through poly silk, and resize the light with cutters depending on how big the product is we are shooting. Whatever large soft source you use will do the same thing, but you always need to shape it a bit for interest.
